  1. Have you tried pasta salad? We like the tri color rotini noodles, cooked and cooled. Then we add ham, pepperoni, shredded cheese, cucumbers, carrots, whatever. top it off with a dressing, Marie's Creamy Italian is our favorite. I like it because it is so versatile, anything can go in it.
  2. Making Star Wars cookies with the cookie cutters we bought a while a go and the R2D2 measuring cups my kids bought me for an early Mothers Day Present. :D
  3. Siblings and goggles says ds12 Rings, Noodles, rafts, basically anything inflatable for daughter.
  4. We have the 18' one. Actually it is our 2nd one. The first we got when I was pregnant with our youngest. He is 8 now. We just replaced it this last summer. We went through two liners because we left the liner crumpled by the fence while getting the ground prepped between the first and second summer and rats got into it and chewed holes. We ended up digging a hole 2' down and putting the pool in that because we couldn't get the ground level enough for it.
  5. Yes, they are two different shows, but in the same universe and there is a little bit of crossover.
  6. 2 day drive to inlaws, but usually grocery shop once we get there. They can't afford to feed us.
  7. I looking for something to finish off ds17's senior year. He has done up through MUS Alg. 2 and we were looking at their Stewardship program. I am wondering if perhaps there is something less expensive that would cover the same type of material. Thanks
  8. I second Tampa and St. Augustine for excellent history places. Near Orlando, there is also Fort Christmas from the Seminole Indian War. It has old cracker houses from various points in time. depending on when you go, they often have docents in period clothes telling how they did things.
  9. I have two recipes we use regularly. First makes a thick crust dough from the bread maker, although I have done it in the stand mixer too. The second is a thin dough that is supposed to make one 14", but I roll out thin enough to make 2 12" pies. Thick: 1 1/8 cup water 4 cups bread flour 2 TB sugar 2 tsp salt 3 tsp active dry yeast Put the machine on dough mode. after the cycle is over, take out the dough, split it in thirds, and slowly stretch the dough into circles. place the circles into 8" cake pans with about 1/8 cup of olive oil in them, turning to coat both sides. It will seem too oily, but the dough will soak it up and come out crispy. let rise for 1-2 hours or until dough is almost level with pan top. add sauce and toppings, bake at 500 for 10 min. If using stand mixer: mix all ingredients until well mixed and kneaded, place in oiled bowl, turning to coat both sides, and cover. let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size. Then follow the machine directions from splitting the dough into thirds. Thin dough: 3/4 cup warm water 1/2 tsp active dry yeast 2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 tsp salt IN your stand mixer, warm the bowl, then add warm water and yeast, mix for two min. Add in flour and salt, mix til thoroughly mixed, then knead. either roll out the dough for a 12-14" pan, or split it and roll it out for 2 12" pans, depending on how thin you like your dough. Top and cook at 500 for 10 min. Sauce: saute some onions and garlic, diced or minced, in olive oil. add a can of tomato sauce a dash of oregano, basil, garlic, parsley, and red pepper about 1/2 cup parmesan cheese simmer until well blended, adding water as needed to keep it from getting too thick. We usually simmer for 1/2 hr up to an hr.
  10. The Sea of Trolls By Nancy Farmer is one my kids liked. We tried Loki's Wolves by K. L. Armstrong but couldn't get into it. The Kevin Hearne Iron Druid series is good, but more for adults/older teens.
  11. Part of what makes it work for us is neither of us are highly opinionated people. We don't build hills to die on. I love books, he doesn't but he builds me bookshelves to keep my books on even if he would have maybe 5 books in the house if let to himself. I don't use tools (not pretty when I try), but I buy him tools, find places to store them, put up with wood stashed in weird places waiting for a project. You don't have to have the same hobbies, likes, etc. Just give each other space to do those hobbies. You like different movies? Either choose another activity to do together or agree to take turns picking the movie and watch the other's pick without complaint or snide comments. There is usually a compromise. Our biggest disagreement has to do with safety of all things. We have different ideas of what it is safe for kids to do and at one age. Often, we are surprised at what they can do, above and beyond what either of us thought.

  18. My 12yo usually uses www.quizlet.com for vocabulary and www.spellingcity.com for spelling. It helps him a lot and taking the tests online seem easier for him also. We use Caesar's English for vocab and they have most if not all of them on there already.
  19. I do a thick crust dough in the bread maker. I got the recipe here. 1 1/8 Cups water 4 cups flour 2 TBSP sugar 2 tsp salt 3 tsp yeast Put all ingredients in the bread maker and set it for dough cycle. Put 2-3 TBSP olive oil into an 8in cake pan and spread across the bottom. (you want a lot of oil) After the first rising, take the dough out and split it into 3rds. Work each 3rd into a circle a little smaller than the pan. place dough into pan, then flip it so both sides are oiled. Cover and let rise for 1-2 hours. top as preferred. Heat oven to 500, put pizza in oven for 10-12 min. We also make a thin dough. warm bowl with hot water, then dump the water.. Put 1/2 tsp yeast ans 3/4 cup warm water into bowl and dissolve the yeast add 1/2 tsp salt and 1 cup flour, mix add in a 2nd cup of flour slowly until dough is smooth and silky. (you may not use the entire 2nd cup) Roll out dough thin, the thinner you roll it, the crispier it is. Top and Bake at 500 degrees for 10-12 min.

  24. I am looking for historical fiction set in the Victorian to WWII eras. It will be for my 7th and 8th grade kids. They are reading Lord of the Rings and Little Women, so large works are fine. Any ideas, recommendations? Thank you
