  1. Things is fun here!! Although some of the questions can be inappropriate, depending on the age of the group.
  2. Ds8 also likes Phil Chenevert's reading of the Oz series.
  3. My 8yo is working at 3rd grade more or less. He just got a diagnosis of dyslexia this summer, so it has only been addressed recently. Even before diagnosis, he was my hardest to school. Not learning to read made it more difficult. We accommodated by having me read aloud history, science, word problems, instructions, etc. I also do a lot of the scribing for him or allow him to type it. He has just discovered audio books and has blown through the first two Wizard of Oz books. He loves that he can listen at any time and not be tied to my schedule. Basically, anything that reading and writing are not intrinsic to, I do the reading and writing and he does the understanding and thinking. Reading and writing are done as separate subjects right now. Also, he loves to watch videos that teach him things. He knows lots of animal facts from videos. So I would say, if you let go of the idea that a child needs to do all the reading and writing and embrace alternate methods of learning and output, homeschooling a dyslexic child would be a 3. Maybe even easier if you have a compliant child.
  4. My 8yo was doing this. We tried several reading programs over the years, he was still at sounding out basic CVC words. At 7yo, I took him in for an eye checkup. The dr. said he had a convergence issue with his eyes. We got a 2nd opinion which agreed with the first dr. and DS clicked with the 2nd dr. so we've been going to him for retraining his eyes. We've also started working through AAR level 1. He is finally starting to sound out the words around him in his environment. And feeling much better about himself now that he knows it is his eyes and he needs to work harder but he can do it, instead of thinking of himself as dumb because he couldn't do what everyone said he should be able to do.
  5. Mine like a lot of the older shows, Welcome Back, Kotter, Mash, Hogan's Heroes, Gilligan, etc. but they also watch Bones, Castle, Forever, Arrow, Agents of Shield, Gotham, and Once Upon a time. We have watched Warehouse 13, Eureka, Merlin, White Collar, Chuck, Leverage, Sherlock and select episodes of Buffy and Angel
  6. Bookmarks with pics of the kids or artwork by the kids (loved and still used by both my parents) calendars with kids' pics (loved and used by Grandma) A handsewn pillow made by my dd, prominently displayed on Grandma's couch!! Homemade cookies are a hit with my sis who has two little ones!!
  7. For my daughter, I have a tab marked schedule with week 1, week 2, etc on the right. In that I put whatever she is to do that week, separated by subject, with check off boxes. Then under her tab for the year, I have subject pages that I add in links, etc that she needs for those subjects.
  8. Handwashed and handles up! I don't like getting poked by forks!!
  9. Model 385.1764180 She has made two couch pillows with it this weekend!! She is having fun converting her hand sewing projects to the machine and getting them done quickly.
  10. I tried to upload a picture, but it is not cooperating with me. We went to the local shop where the guy fixes and sells machines. We ended up with a nice Kenmore, metal inside with a plastic housing. DD was able to figure it out easily, especially since it still has the owner's manual with lots of step by step instructions on how the machine works. She also got a free lesson from the man and he showed her how everything works, gave her some tips, extra thread, and ideas on how to decorate her sewing. So, thank you for steering us toward looking for an older machine. I think she is going to be happy with this machine!!
  11. CVS will still do it, but it is the send it off and wait a week type. No idea on Sam's.
  12. Thanks everyone. You have given me a lot to think about. I will look around and see what kind of sewing centers we have around here. I know the table one that Arctic Mom posted won't work, there just isn't room in the house. But thank you for all the information, Arctic Mom!!!!
  13. I'm looking to get my dd a sewing machine for her 15th bday. She has done quite a bit of hand sewing but wants to move on to bigger projects. I am the one who was banned from using mom's machine because I always ended up causing her 2-3 hrs work to untangle and reset everything. So, i have no idea what would be a good beginner machine. I am looking at this one on Amazon. I have about $150 budget to work with. Will this be a good machine? Do have a recommendation for a better one for a beginner? She will have some help from my mom and her friend. Thank you
  14. #4!! My friend just ran into this with her son and apparently it is a recent change. He was able to Dual Enroll fall term, and then not for the spring when under an umbrella school. My son, who is registered with the county, took classes both semesters without any problems. #1 & 2, I've never seen anywhere that it makes a difference. I've known homeschoolers that use DE, FLVS, online classes, partial enrollment in school, and Co-ops. Haven't noticed anyone nitpicking at it around here. #3 I have no clue about, never tried it. Good luck!!
  15. For my older kids, they were folding their own clothes at those ages, but didn't start doing their own washing until about 10-11 yrs old. My ds8 just started folding and putting away his clothes this year. Cleaning mirrors and windows, dusting, wiping cupboard doors and baseboards are all things that my kids have done on occasion but not as regular weekly chores (except the mirrors).
  16. For those who have their kids check off in Onenote, do your kids have their own version of Onenote or is yours on several computers?
  17. Thank you. I do have a textbook on Forensic science that I can go through and look for experiments and such to add in.
  18. I bought 2 courses from the Great Courses for my 9th grade daughter. Trails of Evidence: How Forensic Science Works and Inventions That Changed the World. I was wondering what people generally use for output when using these video courses? Do you have them write a paper for each chapter or make up tests or what? Thanks
  19. Most likely she just scratched it. When I had a ruptured eardrum at about 7 (from an inner ear infection), there was severe pain, the I can't walk type of pain. Dr. gave mom eardrops to use and to put cotton balls in the ear. They make a solution called Swimmer's Ear that is used to clear water out of the ear after swimming. It is sold at most pharmacies. Just tilt the ear up, put 1-2 drops in, wait a few seconds, then tilt the ear down into a paper towel. You can also do a homemade solution of 1/2 rubbing alcohol and 1/2 vinegar, works the same. Not sure on where to find ear plugs, maybe with the goggles, but a swim cap that covers the ears might help too.
  20. Celtic Thunder-Mythology Journey-Greatest Hits Disney's Frozen Mix playlist of Passenger, Five for Fighting, Foo Fighters, LOTR/Hobbit songs, The Lumineers, and Owl City Jim Croce-Greatest Hits Plus we did a youtube stroll through the 80s a couple days ago.
  21. Another vote for only printing the student pages that I want him to write on and we do the rest on the Ipad. I have even used Notability to answer the worksheets on the Ipad.
  22. I ordered from them last year. I don't remember if I got an email saying they shipped, but it was shipped out in a decent time frame. Edited: I looked through my email archives. My order in Feb. I received an order received email but no shipping email.
  23. I'm the same way. Dh knows all the neighbors, chats with them, helps them out. Ds8 plays with the little girls next door. I wave hi if I'm outside and see them, will talk if spoken too AND I hear them. But I am deaf in one ear, so often don't hear someone call to me over the noise of pool pumps, kids playing, cars driving, etc. Also, we live in FL, I am not often outside just to be out. So if I am out, I am preoccupied with the reason that I am out (usually finding dh to get a question answered) and not really paying attention to what is around me. I don't mean to be rude and standoffish, but I've been told I come across that way. Being introverted and hard of hearing added to not liking the heat means I hide inside most of the time while dh gets to know the neighborhood.
  24. If you go into AL, Huntsville has the Space Center things there. http://rocketcenter.com/
