  1. I have grown up in the cc system of the state of Florida as my father worked for one for 35 years. CC have an excellent articulation agreement with the state universities. The course numberings are the same. If you ever have a problem with matching up a course, call the university and ask. I wouldn't get hung up with the "titles" of the classes. If your son hasn't taken Algebra II, then the classes will definitely be something new! The CPT will determine what class he will start out in. My sons started with Intermediate Algebra in 10th grade (after having Geometry). It won't count towards their AA degree, but will count as an "elective." This class class under dual enrollment for only the cost of the books. It counting as an "elective" really doesn't matter as they will be having to take several math classes for their majors. Choosing a math track becomes important after they finish College Algebra. My sons are thinking accounting and computer science engineering and the sequences for them are different. As we say so often on this board, "it all depends on the child" and on the college board, "check with the universities you are interested in attending." I have been very pleased with SPC. My oldest has had classes at four campuses: Clearwater, Gibbs, Tarpon Springs, and Seminole...plus some online! Please feel free to contact me through a pm if you have any other questions as sometimes I don't check the board.
  2. Hi Sue, I am familiar with FL CC (and St. Petersburg College as I live in Clearwater)...my oldest will graduate high school and his AA degree in May and I have a 10th grader who started at SPC this year. I want to add that students have to take a math placement test to determine which math class they can start out in. My ds hadn't had algebra 2, so they went directly into MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra). It doesn't count as a "math" credit for their AA, but as an elective. College Algebra and above counts fulfill the "math" requirement. You also need to look at your son's major, as different majors require different math sequences (for example, Engineering requires MAC 1147 (combo of Trig/Pre-Cal) and the Calculus I,II, III, with Analytical Geometry, whereas Business doesn't require the Calculus with Analytical Geometry, but Applied Calculus). I don't really understand how SPC and the schools determine the credit hours. Some of the courses only receive .5 high school credit...when I know he has spent just as much time or more on those classes than classes he was awarded 1.0 high school credits! In the end, it didn't matter for us. We were aiming to get his AA degree and not concerned so much about "high school" credits. He will graduate with his AA (and 78 college credit hours) and 28.5 high school credits (using the dual enrollment equivalency numbers). The classes will transfer to the university level also since Florida community colleges have a reciprocal agreement with the state universities. For our family, the cc route works. It's been great for both of them to learn how to study/prepare for college classes while they are at home and while I can help organize them! It has given them independence and two years of free college (we pay for books). Good luck with your decision! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about SPC!
  3. I have two Eagles and they raised the money for their projects...not the organization benefiting from the project.
  4. Story of the World, of course! It even helped my ds pass a Western Civilizations CLEP test...and it had been 3 years since he listened to it!!! LOVE ALL the Story of the World volumes! Thanks, Susan!
  5. I sign up for instant notifications on the "free books" on this forum...it's great! I have gotten 100s of free books from them. Some are free for only a day, so you have to "buy" them right away :) LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my kindle! I hope you enjoy yours, too!
  6. Mike's Pastries (300 Hanover Street...in the North End...near Paul Revere's House and Old North Church) Cannolis are terrific! We went to a church service on Sunday morning at the Old North Church (my boys actually chose to do it!) It was a great place to worship. Any food in the North End is good...we ate at a couple of Italian restaurants (can't remember their names) and both were excellent. Lexington and Concord are fun...don't forget Minute Man National Battlefield (or whatever the name is...you need to go to the bridge where "the shot heard round the world" was fired. We all LOVED our trip to Boston...so much to do...so little time! One of our "favorites" was John Adams National Park...it's in Quincy/Braintree area...EXCELLENT if you have the time and ability to get there! Have fun!
  7. LOVE my Kindle! I've had it almost two years...read over 400 books! My parents both have one and we gave one to my oldest son. LOVE IT!
  8. My 13 ds got one with his birthday money. It is the only XBox game that I have ever truly enjoyed playing! He only has the game that comes with it, but we have played the demo games for several others. It's a LOT of fun! (And you can really work up a sweat!) I am proud to say that I actually beat my middle ds in the Reflex game AND in the dance demo! You need to be about 6 feet from the sensor...and probably about 6 feet across if two people are playing. (And turn off any ceiling fans...ask me how I know! ouch!) I would think that it would be able to pick up small children because when our 50 pound goldendoodle walks in front of the sensor it wants to add her as a player! The technology is truly amazing! During the games it takes pictures and then shows them afterwards. I am actually looking forward to him getting some new games for Christmas!!! Happy Hunting!
  9. The book is SO much better! I tried to watch this series after reading the book but I didn't think it portrayed him well. I couldn't watch it. I LOVED the book by McCullough and I encourage you to read it if you want to really get a picture of John and Abigail...and all their situations. I am a huge John and Abigail Adams fan now because of it :) I also encourage you to visit the John Adams National Park outside of Baltimore...one of the best tours we've been on (and also one of the least expensive!) Almost all the items are original to the Adams family.
  10. My oldest is taking all of his classes at the cc again this year and will graduate with his AA degree in May. He is also doing cross country and lacrosse at the high school. My middle (10th grader) is taking Comp I, Int. Alg and Ethics at the cc and is taking TV Production II, Drama II, cross country, and lacrosse at the local high school. My youngest (7th grader) is home with me and I'm enjoying the time with him!
  11. I'm glad your day went well! We started too! (I am also trying to not be nasty, impatient mom...and praying my son will not be nasty, impatient son!!!) Have a great year!!!
  12. Gettysburg trip must! Hire a tour guide to ride in your car. You can book it on the Gettysburg Park website. It was WONDERFUL! We chose the 2 hour tour...and it ended up being about 2 1/2 hours. He drove our car and that made it super easy! He was a great storyteller and historian. Highly recommend doing it!!! I love your trip...we've gone to all of those places...and loved every stop. Have fun!
  13. My oldest ds went on Hillsdale's Winston Churchill/WWII trip last year and loved it! He wishes he had the money to do another trip this year! I know your son will have a GREAT time. We were pleased with the program. My ds is also interested in attending Hillsdale...I don't know if I want him so far away from home! And it's a lot colder in Michigan than it is in Florida! (He also is a huge University of Florida fan....Go Gators!!!) Best of luck to you and your son!
  14. My oldest is going to be a senior. He is taking all of his classes at the cc...and hopefully will graduate with his AA in the spring. Good luck to everyone!
  15. Sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your family.
  16. So sorry to hear this. Praying for your family. Off to hug my boys....
  17. I vote for a Kindle! I have had mine for a year now and love it!!! I have read over 300 books this past year. My husband said it was the "easiest birthday present he ever got me."
