Hi, For those who think the SOTW 1 is too simple for older children, I've got a great story! My 15 ds (9th grader) just passed the CLEP test for Western Civ I today :hurray: He used the Teaching Company DVDs and Spievogel's Western Civ test this year and finished them around January. For the past 2 weeks he has reviewed using the REA CLEP guide. When asked what helped him the most, he replied, "I had forgotten a lot from the DVDs, but the REA guide was helpful and I remembered a lot of the ancient time period stuff from SOTW 1." NOTE: We studied SOTW 1 our first year homeschooling...when he was in 6th grade!!! I remember how much we learned that first year and how much we all enjoyed it (I still have our mummified chicken...and it is well preserved!) I agree with Teresa. He is an excellent and encouraging speaker. He lectures about writing (or whatever) and doesn't just try to sell, sell, sell his product.

I am on my second son now...it never gets easier! I have to be careful how I react with this one and how I say it...because he gets defensive and upset...not a good thing behind the wheel! Prayer is a good thing! He is taking Driver's Ed at the local high school...which makes me feel a LOT better. ...only one more to go in 2 years, 4 months.....

I voted "unhelpful"...but that's not really true. He just trusts my judgment. It's my job and he is very supportive of giving me whatever it takes to get the job done well...financial, emotional, and spiritual support. He's a keeper!

Here's our plan so far: Latin: Latin Prep II (ch 7-10) - Latin Prep III (ch 1-6) History: SL 6 Bible: Community Bible Study - Genesis Math: Chalkdust Algebra I Science: Apologia General Science LA: SL 6 reading and writing, Sequential Spelling/Vocabulary from the Classical Roots Logic: Fallacy Detective/Thinking Toolbox Music: continue violin lessons Art: Feed My Sheep Misc: Boy Scout merit badges (I think I am going to actually put them on his assignment list so he can get them done!) PE: lacrosse, running It will be a busy year...but he will be the only one I have full time at home. My oldest will be full time again at the community college and my middle will be taking a couple of classes each semester there also. Hope you have a great school year!

Wow...I guess we're lucky! My son is taking 3 summer classes (dual enrollment) and we aren't paying for them. We are on the west coast of FL...Pinellas County. I guess we should enjoy it while we can!

My dh is an Eagle. My 17 ds is an Eagle. My 15 ds is an Eagle. My 12 ds is First Class. We are hoping we have enough energy left to keep encouraging him!!!

We've had great success with my ds (17). He started last year and took two classes each term. This year he has taken 13 hours per term and is doing great. He enjoys getting college credit for college work. Many of his ps friends take AP classes...but then never pass/get the college credit. He is on track to graduate next year (when he will be a "senior"?) with his AA degree. One benefit that I didn't realize ahead of time, is that it is nice to be able to help them adjust to college while still at home. He has learned how to plan ahead for his classes, how to schedule enough time for writing papers, has found a nice librarian to help him at the library, and is learning great study habits. I can see how so many college freshmen going away to school can get so far behind. Last year I had to kind of gently stay on him...this year....he is on his own! He also has an "older spirit" and cracks me up sometimes. Some days I will get texts that say, "some people really shouldn't be in college!" Another funny thing...he complained last year doing Apologia's Chemistry book..."he needed a real teacher"....well...last semester he took Chemistry I at the college and said, "that book was actually really good! I knew a lot of stuff my friends from the local high school didn't know." I will take validation any way I can!!! I think you should let her try it...sounds like it would be a good fit. Good luck!

My 2 younger ds are in their second year of Lax and they LOVE it! We have enjoyed learning more about it the past year. It keeps them in great shape...lots of running! Our lacrosse club has free clinics at various times of the year that kids can attend and see if they like it. You may want to contact your league and see if they offer something like that. Equipment is a big investment...so you will want some commitment before you purchase. I hope he likes it! BRAG alert! My youngest had a terrific game yesterday...he had a "hat trick"...which means he scored 3 goals! It has really helped his confidence...and for a 12 year old...that's a good thing! (Unfortunately his team lost 4-6! The defense wasn't playing up to par!) Lacrosse has only been in our area since 2002, but it's quickly growing. The high school club team has been placed in 4 of the high schools (as a "club" team) in our county, with hopes of expanding to the remaining. In our area, there are probably about 12 high school club teams that play each other. Our club has a rec team (1-4 grade), youth (5th and 6th grades), 2 middle school teams, a girls' middle school team, and a hs girls' team. You can also see some games on ESPN U. College games are really good and fast! Good luck!

I loved St. Thomas when our cruise stopped there! We took a taxi and spent the day at Emerald Beach....very quiet and undisturbed. We were the only ones there! Bahamas is kind of gross...the Atlantis is nice, though. We didn't stay there, but took a tour of their aquarium when we were on a cruise. Cruises are a fun way to sample different islands. Have fun!!!

My ds uses the kindle app for his iTouch. Personally, I don't like it. It is backlit...so if you're in the sun, you can't see it. Plus it's just so small! The kindle is so much easier to read and see. The kindle is small enough that it fits in my purse and goes everywhere I go!!!

I LOVE my Kindle 2! My dh gave it to me for my birthday last year and I've probably read close to 250 books since then. I can read them faster and easier on the kindle. I have gotten a lot of books free. I have purchased a lot of books. You can get a wealth of information from this website http://www.kindleboards.com. My dad got my mom one for Christmas and she is on my account (so we can share books). My mom just got my dad one and now he's on my account also. My ds also reads my books on his iTouch. My kids think I'm addicted to it! (It really has "re-kindled" my love of reading!!!) Love, love, love it!!! My birthday is next month and I think my husband will have a really hard time beating last year's gift! He said it was the easiest present he ever bought for me! Have fun!

We've been using it for about 3 years now and love it! It makes it easy to see where the money goes! I also like the funding and spending plan aspects of it. It's best to find out what college/university your child is interested in attending...and then find out what their policies are. It's different for every school...and every state. So far, my oldest ds has passed 3 CLEP tests and earned 9 hours. He is also dually enrolled (started last year when he was 15) and has earned 28 hours. In our state, the dual enrollment classes are free...we just have to buy the books. Good luck!

My ds has passed 3 CLEP tests and has 9 credit hours: US History I and II, and American Government. (He is a big history buff.) He studied the REA guides and had completed SL 400...which covers both government and some American history. He is planning on taking the two Economics ones this summer. My other son will take Western Civ I and II this year. We are using Spielvogel's text, Teaching Company DVDs, and the REA guides. He will probably take some other CLEP tests also. My ds thinks the REA guides are very helpful. Good luck!

College Prep Genius is a wonderful approach. My ds went to a class in October and was blown away by her breakdown and "tricks" of mastering the test....and he was very skeptical and didn't want to go to the class.
