  1. Does anyone have any experiences they could share about these 2 similar curricula? A2 almost seems to be a more robust version of RC; however, RC won a lot of reader awards last year. Hmmm...:confused1: By the way, I am new. This is my first post. Be gentle! Katie
  2. I plan on using a few books next year that are both available free online (Baldwin Project, Project Gutenburg, Google Books, etc.) and as print books from Amazon et al. Would you print them yourselves (I'm getting a laser printer next month) and put them in binders, or just buy the already printed books? They average around $8-10 apiece in print.
  3. Just for fun, do you have or are you thinking about getting one? Post which one, and what you think of it, if you want. If you do have one, do you have a preference for ereader vs. "real" book?
  4. Both of my boys are currently in science classes right now - the first time they have had classes at the same time. For the next hour, I get to sit here by myself in the science museum, hooked into museum's public wi-fi, reading the boards.:party::party::party: ...and to think, this is the way it is going to be every week! Krista
  5. I am about to give my iPod classic to my college kid (his broke - and he used his far more than I use mine - his was just about full!!) and need to get another MP3 for the few hundred songs I listen to on occasion... On the other hand, the following is from the Amazon website: "Listen to Music & Podcasts Transfer MP3 files to Kindle to play as background music while you read. You can quickly and easily transfer MP3 files via USB by connecting Kindle to your computer. " I have also been contemplating a Kindle for some time, now ( I want to be able to make text bigger for my old eyes) - if I can also use it to play my songs I can justify getting one! At $139 it is the same or cheaper than a Nano! So - those of you with a Kindle - can you also use it just to play some MP3 songs? Can I kill two birds with one stone by getting a Kindle???
  6. I was at Barnes and Noble yesterday and got a good look at the Nook. I was almost set to buy myself a Kindle, but the Nook looks great as well. Does anyone know enough about both to compare them? One thing I liked about Nook is that you can set as many bookmarks within a book as you want. I like this for my Bible reading. Can Kindle do that? I see Kindle is backordered until mid-September, another plus for Nook. Who loves their Nooks and Kindles?
  7. I know it's a bit early to start making a Christmas wish list but the 3rd generation Kindle at $139 caught me eye. I don't understand the difference between the cheaper Kindle and the $189 model, though. If I have Wi-Fi at my house, at the library, etc. can I just use that? I don't want to have to pay a monthly bill but OTOH I don't want to pay the extra $50 up front if I don't really need it. I'm so confused  Can anyone enlighten me?
  8. I've seen some comments that there are not as many books available for Sony Readers as there are for Kindle and Nook. Can you download books from google books and other on-line sources for the free pre-1926 books onto the Sony Reader? And can you load any new books? If you can't load them from Amazon where do you get them?
  9. I am so close to making a return!! The ONLY books I seem to be able to put on it are the ones I get through google. The guy on the phone told me to save them to my computer if they were other than google and upload them to my reader. It is NOT working at all. I am out of minutes to call them again so I am really hoping to find some help here. How do I get a gutenberg book saved to my sony? Can anyone out there help me? I am taking the steps he told me but nothing is working. Thanks so much, Tricia
  10. I'm looking into getting a Kindle or Nook for my son so he can have access to more books, but I don't want him to be able to web browse on the reader. I want to keep his web browsing to the main computer where I can see what he's doing, what sites he's visiting, etc. So, if I got him the Kindle or Nook, could I disable the web browser and password protect it so that he could use it to download new books and then disable it again?
  11. Wouldn't that be great---f you could borrow a book, and in 2 weeks or whatever, it simply expires on your Kindle? Does anyone anywhere do this?
  12. I have been very against buying an eBook reader; there is nothing quite like holding a book in your hand, but there are so many old books that I want to read, that are out of print, I think it is time I caved in and bought one. So, what is out there in the world of eBook readers? I do not want to spend a lot of money on one. I will only use it for free books, I can use the library for all new books. What do you suggest I should look into?
  13. DS 11 loves to read, and I need to start veering him more to the classics fore better preparation for hs and college. The "lists" can be overwhelming and I don't know where to start. He reads at a hs/college level, so comprehension is not an issue, but I worry about content and age-appropriate themes, though we are not a conservative home. I just don't want things that are "too sexual" or violent in nature for an 11 year old. Thanks!
  14. I'm interested in purchasing rather than printing as many of these books as possible. Is there a way to get the list without buying the actual program?
  15. I've held the Nook at B&N and kinda like it. of course, I've not had the chance to hold the Kindle. I'm letting my 10 yr old son do most of the research and then convince me which one he thinks I should get. At this point I'm leaning toward the Nook per his recommendation on the basis that Nook is Wi-Fi so no additional connection charges will be incurred and I can connect anywhere to browse/buy books. Anyone own one or the other or have opinions on one or the other? I'm kinda ruling out the iPad due to price and the fact that just want an e-reader. I don't want to be distracted by all the apps and other things that can be done with the iPad. I just want to read and carry my library with me wherever I go.
  16. I know Office Depot does it but is there a more affordable place ? OD charges $10 for shipping 100 pages !
  17. DS has a Sony Reader and we are having difficulty locating books for him to download. He wanted Starship Troopers and we couldn't find it. Now he is looking for Something Wicked This Way Comes and we can't find it. We have looked at Borders and Amazon. We also conducted a Google search. All to no avail. If you have a reader where do you go to get your ebooks? (I apologize if this has been asked before.)
  18. My hubby wants to get me one for Mother's Day, but we're trying to figure out which would be the best for me. We're kind of leaning towards the Nook or the Sony Reader because we can download books from the library with those. Out of the two, I think we're leaning towards the Nook, but we're definitely not close to a final decision. Any input?
  19. We were leaning toward putting a Kindle in the school materials budget for the coming year, but then I have been looking at the iPad, which it seems could also be our Kindle. Anyone have both, or have one but looked at the other? How is it working out?
  20. W00t.com has one. http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=12702
  21. would you buy it again? Just wondering if people who have an e-reader use it as much as they thought or is it just another dust collecting gadget?
  22. I'd like to get some sort of small e-reader for all those times that I'm waiting at dance class, t-ball practice, and so on, and am considering one of these two. I don't want anything big-just something I can stick in my purse and keep with me. Both cost about the same amount, and look to be similarly sized. Does anyone have any pros/cons of one over the other?
  23. DS is looking for Starship Troopers for his Sony Reader. We have tried Borders, The Ebook Directory and Freeebooks.com. We cannot find it as an ebook. Are we missing an awesome site that might have it? :bigear:
  24. I have been looking at the iPod Touch and wondering what other hs families think about it? If you have one, do you find yourself using it as a resource for hs? I noticed in the past apps that might be helpful, like a bird field guide for example... Thoughts/opinions would be much appreciated. Good or bad! Thanks
