  1. Some of you may remember that I posted in January looking for schooling advise for my middle kids when my oldest son was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Our family has adjusted to the "new normal" of life with cancer and I'm not worried about their educations anymore. However, treatment for ds has not gone the way they thought it would. He didn't respond to the chemo that 92% of patients are cured by, and so after 5 rounds (and 3 different regiments) we are going to Boston - most likely for surgery. We made the drive out a few weeks ago to meet the oncologist and will be headed back for appointments on Tuesday with pre-op and the surgeon. We are hoping to drive into Boston Monday night and stay at the Ronald McDonald house. Then we should have free time from noon to 3 PM. We will obviously have to eat during that time (Because who is hungrier than a teenage boy? A teenage boy on appetite stimulants), but I would also like to find something fun to do. I won't have the younger kids with me, and ds has been in pretty good shape lately, so he can do lots of walking. So if we have 3 hours to eat and blow off steam near the Children's Hospital, what should we do?

  3. We're headed to Boston this week as a family birthday/Christmas present to ourselves. The swimming pool and buffet breakfast at the hotel are big draws! We'll arrive in the afternoon of Day 1, hopefully start on the Freedom Trail sights, go have dinner, swim, then do the rest of the Trail on Day 2. We definitely want to do the tour of the Constitution, so we have to get there by 3pm at the latest, I think. Day 3 we come home after we enjoy the buffet:001_smile: All this involves 6 kids ages 2-16. Is this realistic? Any advice? Experience? I would be grateful for your thoughts.
  4. 60 events around the Fenway area of Boston: http://www.fenwayculture.org/ We've gone several years in a row.
  5. We hope to take a trip to Boston this fall and look at nifty historical stuff. We are also nature lovers who think it would be neat to hike there at the height of the fall color. When is the best time to go? We were thinking of end or Sept or early October. We can go earlier or later. Recommendations for lodging, historic sites, or hikes?? Lodging can be anything from camping (though not likely but possible) to an efficiency cabin to hotel. We'd probably prefer something inexpensive. Thanks!
  6. I'm taking my 2 homeschooled children to Boston for an educational field trip. I wasn't planning on having a car. We'll fly into Logan airport and take a shuttle to the hotel- we are thinking Marriott Courtyard Copley Square w/ points. I want to see most of the sites around Boston. I grew up in western Mass, so we went frequently, but some of what we did is far from Boston w/out a car. 1. Would you try to include?: *Lexington and Concord? (I want to show them Louisa May Alcott's and Hawthorne's House and Walden Pond) *Boat tour? Would one of Boston Harbor be enough? Or the Charles River? I didn't realize the Cape was 1 hr away. I would love to do a boat tour to Martha's Vinyard and Nantucket, but I think that is for another trip...) *Over to Cambridge? to tour Harvard and walk through the Sackler Museum *I would love to take the subway over to Watertown bc my Armenian heritage is there, but no family that I'm close to- just lots of distant relatives. I could take them to Sevan Bakery to sample some of my childhood memories that I don't know how to make. This might take too much time, I'm not sure bc guidebooks don't include Watertown excursions! In Boston we will walk through the Freedom trail, museums, etc. We're planning the trip around tickets for 1 ballgame at Fenway, my son is a HUGE Red Sox fan, I was too growing up. 2. Do you think an Old Town Trolley Tour would be beneficial? We used it DC, but what we want to see in Boston is pretty compact and we'll use the subway to Fenway, Cambridge, and a couple museums farther way. 3. How many nights would you stay if we flew in super early the first day- 2 or 3? 4. Can you recommend any places to eat?- budget and family friendly Boston landmarks? Thanks for helping!
  7. I put this list together for adults visiting the Boston area. Hope it helps someone. There are MANY more that I didn't list! :bigear:
  8. We're going to be in Boston for 4 days before a wedding in VT this summer. I used to live in Boston, but that was right out of college and I don't think my kids would want to do the same things I did when I lived there!!! :loll: So, given the ages of my kids (in my signature), what things would you recommend? (Obviously the Freedom Trail, and hopefully a Red Sox game, but I need more!!) We studied American History this year, so I'm really excited about this trip!! We're staying at a Marriott in Copley Square - so right in the middle of the action!! Do they still have the unlimited T passes for a certain number of days? Are there other passes that include multiple museums? Ideas? Thanks!
  9. Howdy, DH, DD7 yrs & I are going to Boston next week. We have read up on the city, read Longfellow's poem Paul Revere's Midnight ride, biographies on Paul Revere, George Washington, Ben Franklin, general history on the Revolution, and Make Way for Ducklings by McCloskey. We will have 2 1/2 days. The first evening (1/2 day), we will go to the public gardens, ride the swan boats, and relive the McCloskey book. The next 2 days, I want to explore all things Revolutionary War related- North Chruch, Freedom Walk, Revere's House, Boston Tea Party, Lexington & Concord, Bunker Hill, etc. I will have a rent car but can also navigate subways. Any suggestions? Thanks.
