  1. We've changed things up a bit since our January plan. Algebra I AOPS - Well Trained Mind Academy Physics Well Trained Mind Academy Intro to Lit & Comp Blue Tent Online (+Megawords at home) Intro to Spanish Duolingo online History of Science Build Your Library 8 (at home) Modern History Well Trained Mind Academy Music of the World Florida Virtual School
  2. Not teenagers, but Sam does a good job of portraying that type of friendship Sam/Frodo - Lord of the Rings
  3. I don't think it can be that simple. It depends on the situation. My eldest applied to three - one fit and two safeties. My 11th grade dd is currently planning to apply to three -- two fits and one safety. But my dd 13 will likely apply to 10 or 12 schools. She has a totally different set of priorities.
  4. Yes, it is now called CNN 10 (ten minutes of student news each day.)
  5. Memoria Press - $550 - $600 They use Classical Composition and/or IEW, so not what we are looking for. I may start using them for literature though.
  6. I cannot find many reviews for the Memoria Press high school online classes. I am especially interested in their high school literature classes, but would appreciate hearing about experiences in any MP online classes 8th grade and up.
  7. It seems last year they offered a discount when you registered early for three or more classes. I am hoping they do something similar this year!
  8. I'm having trouble locating online Spanish programs, preferably from secular providers. We were going to use FLVS, but they only offer levels 1 and 2. We would really like a program that offers at least three years. Any suggestions?
  9. Fire my realtor. It sounds like he is more concerned about his commission percentage. It's his job to represent you, including justifying the lower offer to the seller. It doesn't sound that difficult to do in this case. The price hasn't been dropped in eight months and they aren't getting offers. Reason enough to start with a low offer. They can always counter higher.
  10. We have a Tim Tebow law, though I do not know anything about a UIL league. As the primary educator, I am allowed to print up and sign a sheet of paper that says my student is making satisfactory academic progress (when forms are needed for sports participation.) ETA: In Florida
  11. My dd also wants to go to public school to be with friends. I have said no to eighth grade next year, but yes to 9th grade if she can get into the IB or Cambridge programs. We have one local high school with each program. Now that she knows she can go she is reweighing her options and may choose to go the dual enrollment route as her older sisters have.
  12. I'll have a 12th grader. I'm not doing any planning for her though. She's a full time DE student and her advisor will help her choose the remaining classes necessary for her AA degree in theater. All of her extra-curriculars are either clubs at the college or through the local theaters. She is planning to submit a couple of college applications and find a job this summer.
  13. Honestly, I think doing Algebra II and Geometry is a better match up if one wants to do two maths in one year. However, my daughter wants to keep open the option to go into a magnet program in 9th grade and the program she wants requires a student to have completed Algebra I and Geometry by 8th grade. Most of the kids will have taken Algebra I in 7th and Geometry in 8th. I thought about doing it that way, however, the magnet program is only one option and I preferred she do a more rigorous pre-algebra for 7th (AOPS) rather than jumping straight into Algebra I as it would be more beneficial to her if she chooses any other route. She is a strong math student and I do think that her specific pre algebra program is enough to prepare her for Geometry (especially Saxon geometry.)
  14. Are the Shmoop AP classes considered high school classes or College Plus classes?

  17. I would think this would be an issue for the university to address, not a change needed to homeschool law. Obviously, their process has allowed many unprepared students to enter the university. The policy is not only hurting the unprepared students, but also those expecting classes to be taught at a specific university level. Universities should not be admitting such students. Around here, we have a very large unschooling population. They seem to get along fine. They have very different ideas on the purposes and methods needed for education. Very few of the kids go straight to university. Actually, I don't personally know any that have. However, they always seem to be a very creative, laid-back, friendly group of kids. Many start working early, either using their creative talents or working for family and friends. About half jump straight to the workforce and the other half go to community college. I don't really see any of them struggling any more than university students. They just go a different path. It isn't what I want for my kids, but no, it is not something that worries me. I definitely do not think homeschoolers should be required to meet some minimum level of dedication in order to school at home. Or provide a "legitimate reason" for not having their children in school. It is merely a personal choice, allowed by law.
  18. If you want to skip to the 10th grade it is supposed to be the first half of World History and Biology as the science. I think she plans to have it out this summer.
  19. I didn't list them at all. She took a lot of high school credits in jr. high and it would have looked like padding the transcript. My dd was still accepted everywhere she applied. However, she didn't apply to any super selective schools.
  20. I like Math-U-See for my non-mathy dd. Sorry, I don't know anything about Shmoop. We use Build Your Library, but you are using it now, so it must not be a good fit. Do you have an option for dual enrollment? My dd takes ASL through DE and that has been great. She is also a member of two local ASL groups. They have been a huge benefit in her learning to sign. We don't have to follow the requirements of the public students in this state, so I never bother to list PE. We use sports as important extra-curricular activities on college applications.
  21. We always celebrate Christmas with my mother and her husband. She fills my stocking and her husband's and I fill her stocking and my husband's. We both get things for the kids' stockings.
  22. I'm curious as to how that works. Semifinalists won't be announced until next September; and finalists not until the following February. Will your ds simply be awarded the honor as a college student? Can he still be awarded a scholarship after he is already in college? I always assumed one used a 10th grade PSAT score in place of the 11th grade if graduating early.
