  1. I would check with your area. Paramedic is basically required in our county. The firefighters in my family do not have other jobs. But, they started young and worked their way up.
  2. My dd will be a lifeguard as soon as she turns fifteen. I think it's a great job so long as it is at a pool where all of the lifeguards are serious about their responsibilities.
  3. At the college my dd is planning to attend students that earn an AA through DE must still use the freshman dorm even though they come in as upperclassmen. She is not thrilled. The freshman dorms are not great. Also, AA's earned through DE don't affect scholarship/merit aid in our state.

  5. My dd is planning to go to school next year for 9th grade as well. She wants the experience and the live classes and the swim team (which she can do as a homeschooler, but she would be the only homeschooler on the team.) Her current plan is to only go to school for 9th and 10th and then homeschool (but remain on the swim team) 11th and 12th. She sees that as the best of both worlds. :001_rolleyes: We'll see how it works out.
  6. This is something interesting I didn't learn until I started working in public safety. Unlike on TV, most stations (and all of the stations in our area) no longer have any officers/deputies actually on duty at the stations. Sometimes they stop by to turn in paperwork, attend a meeting, etc. But for the most part all on-duty officers are out in their cars. If they are needed back at the station they must be dispatched there. So any time anything happens, running from an armed person, bank robbery, etc. call 9-1-1; they are the ones that must dispatch the officers to the location.
  7. Didn't they change FAFSA so you are supposed to use your 2016 tax info for the 2018-2019 school year?
  8. My dd is applying to high school this year as well. I just used the standard high school transcript and gave her credit hours. All of the local middle schools do six classes (six credits) per year so I made sure she had at least six credits in each year of middle school. I figured it would be best if her transcript closely resembled the other middle school students for easy comparison.
  9. Our stadium has had this policy for quite a while. The only problem with the ones that have the college logo is that there are a lot of them (as they sell them at the stadium store for those that arrived unaware) and I have seen people grab the wrong one. Locally, the policy does not apply to our arena.
  10. If I were uncomfortable meeting with the umbrella school, I would get my letter of intent stamped by the county first (still waiting until this summer) and take it with me to the meeting with the umbrella school. That way I could show them the form verifying that I will be under the county for the new school year and therefore nothing left to discuss.
  11. My kids call Hake Grammar - Hate Grammar. However, I like it and it works. So we use it anyway. :)
  12. Sorry, I'm not familiar with the fall apps. What happens when the app does accidentally take it as a fall? Does it just contact a couple of people and the owner have to say, false alarm, I am fine? Or is there some sort of fee involved?
  13. The kids pay for college in our home, because it isn't feasible or practically possible for the parents to pay. :D However, I do everything in my power to make sure they each get at least two years of college credits for free through FL dual enrollment.
  14. We have moved to only doing stockings, so we may do more in them than average. The items do tend to be on the practical side though: body lotions, shoe laces, food gift cards, pens, earbuds, etc.
  15. One of my favorite blogs ever.
  16. I sure hope not. We just paid the non-refundable orientation fee for my dd's one and done.
  17. Didn't have a chance to read through all the comments, but are you a member of your local Facebook: Buy, Sell or Trade page? We've been considering a cheap car purchase and several have shown up on our local page in the $3000 OBO range this weekend. We may go look at one this afternoon.
  18. It is not necessary if your dd took the classes as a homeschooled student. We chose not to, mainly because our reports included all of the middle school classes the girls took as well and that would likely have just added confusion. No one questioned our FLVS grades.
  19. We are in north central Florida, no major issues here. We have some downed trees and the yard is completely flooded, but no major damage to the house. About half the county lost power, we did not. Family in Fort Myers area is well and power is back on, but the storm-surge flooding is extensive. My mother cannot get within a half mile of her house. The houses she can see closest to her own are in about six feet of standing water.
  20. Crazy as it sounds, it would be very difficult to travel at this point. We are quickly running out of gas locally. I sat in a gas line this morning that extended onto the main roadways because I heard that the gas station nearest us, which had previously been out, had received a gas shipment overnight. The interstate running through town is bumper to bumper and people will likely begin to run out of gas on the roadways soon.
  21. That's a good idea. The college is in Florida, so I suppose there is a possibility that they will push back the deadline. I would imagine a majority of their students are in-state. I'll email them and check. I have not heard that an alternative would be available, rather they will be pushed back to the next scheduled ACT date. But, things are still up in the air. We could not afford to fly out, even assuming there are any flights as the airport here is quite small and I have to work until Friday.
  22. These are merit scholarships specific to the college she plans to attend. The final date for score submission is October 15th.
  23. No, it is due to Hurricane Irma. It sounds like all of the surrounding counties (and possibly the whole state) will cancel. And any main roads out of the county are already backed up and moving at only a snail's pace.
  24. I am sad for my daughter today. It looks like they are going to cancel the ACT test this Saturday in our area. She has been studying so hard and it is her last chance to qualify for merit scholarships from her college. The next ACT/SAT date is too late. She had a good chance of getting one of the scholarships, but had to raise her ACT composite score one point to qualify. She did take the SAT two weeks ago, so there is still a chance she qualified. She had never taken that exam before though and has test anxiety, so we were more confident in her qualifying with the ACT which she has already taken several times over the last five years. :(
  25. Dd was accepted last month to University of North Florida. It was her first choice, so she already accepted and is looking at the different residence halls.
