  1. I have a dd taking ASL at a community college. I will say the language can be "salty" both the spoken and the signs themselves. There is no protecting underage ears. My dd loves the classes and is going on to university as an ASL translator, but she had been in several theater programs for years so the language and discussions occurring were not new to her. She has felt comfortable and among her peers in the classrooms. And I offer this warning as a parent that sent her eldest to university at age 14. But that was for Latin and those students were a whole different group. :)
  2. We are allowing our third dd to attend high school. She has been asking to go to school pretty much since kindergarten. :) If I don't have her cooperation, it doesn't seem homeschooling would accomplish any of our objectives for doing so in the first place. We agreed in 6th grade that she could go to high school, if that was still her choice. She is now entering 8th grade - and her last year of homeschooling.
  3. My dd is not an introvert, but she has a job that would be great for one. She works at a pet rescue. Almost all of their employees are college students. She works alone, walks and feeds the animals, washes the bedding, gives out medicine, etc. She's allowed to bring her school work and do that if she has extra time.
  4. View the student scores. In the top right is a place to click on download student score report pdf. The top right corner of the second page of the downloaded report will list all of the colleges that received that ACT score report. ETA: Or if you sent them after you already received the scores: view the student scores you sent and look to the left there is a view order history link. It will give the day each score was sent and where it was sent.
  5. I have a Honda Pilot. It has 194,000 miles and has not needed any major repairs. We are thinking about replacing it this year. It is going to need new brakes and tires soon. As I haven't found anything I really like better, I may just get a newer Pilot. :)
  6. It has been hard for us to meet the social studies requirements as well. Math and science are easier as most are 1 credit classes. If she doesn't want more US History, several other options will qualify as social studies: economics, state government, political science, anthropology, additional psychology, humanities. Plus, I think Florida gives quite a bit of leeway to homeschoolers. For my first dd, I added Facets of Sustainability to her social studies column to bring her credits up to 4. None of the three Florida colleges she applied to questioned her transcript and she was accepted to all three. My second dd only applied to one Florida college (but different from her sister's three choices) and was accepted. I had to add Deaf Culture to her social studies list to bring it up to 3.5 credits. :)
  7. Yes, psychology is counted as a social studies credit. One of my dd's transcript has 1.5 credits of social studies as psychology classes. However, three credits total of social studies is light for some of the colleges. Make sure at least one of the credits is US History.
  8. Luckily, her first choice is an in-state public university, so financially doable even without the merit aid. Though merit aid would be a great bonus!
  9. My dd's first choice college did an "apply in July" program. I encouraged her to go ahead and apply. She met with the school today and was accepted. I drove with her to the campus. It was much more nerve wracking than I had anticipated. Worthwhile though. It seems strange to have the decision made before the start of senior year. She still needs to submit a separate scholarship application before the end of October. But mostly, we are done already. :hurray:
  10. Do you have a state college scholarship program? And does your dd want to go to school in-state? If so you may want to check into the program requirements. In Florida we have Bright Futures. If you go to public school in 11th and homeschool 12th you are not eligible for the state funded college scholarship program.
  11. A dozen times at least: ambulances for my dd's boyfriend, my own boyfriend (in high school) a woman seizing at the library (without any acquaintances nearby) a biker in a hit-and-run, a flipped car in a hit-and-run downed live electrical lines at least three times probably more a couple of patron fights at work (when I was younger and worked the graveyard shift) and a robbery at work an argument with my landlord (when I was much, much younger) and had to move out under police protection at least twice for very erratic driving on the interstate once when we were out on our boat (before the internet) and didn't know the non-emergency number to report a sick/stranded manatee - we wound up helping in the rescue effort Family members have had much more intense calls.

  13. My kids left the children's theater because it was ALL about who you knew. The casting was truly a joke. Have you tried a community theater? They will usually cast children for at least a couple of plays each year. My theater dd is very active in our mostly adult, yet very welcoming of committed children, community theaters.
  14. She will. I haven't had any personal contact with the admissions department. I give my input and she handles the details. :)
  15. Thanks everyone! We played with adding it to the transcript, but it didn't look right. We hadn't made a section for awards and don't want to re-create a whole transcript that really needs to be in the mail today. She is going to contact the school about mailing/emailing a copy of the certificate to have added to her file. Admissions has been helpful in the past, so I think they will be willing to slip it in with her other papers.
  16. My dd says (in our state) it is very easy. You can set up an appointment ahead of time so there is no waiting. The whole test takes about 15-20 minutes. She drove a short distance to an enclosed driving area. Then performed a few easy tasks - park in a parking space without cars on either side, parallel park without cars in the area, turning, breaking, etc. She said the hardest part was parking her car after returning to the DMV as there were no spaces available without parking between two cars. :) She passed on the first try. I don't know anyone that doesn't. However, some states have much more difficult driving tests.
  17. My daughter just won first place in a Hemingway writing contest. She has already submitted her application to her top choice college. However, I have not sent in her transcript yet. I needed to buy black ink first. I was planning to send the transcript today. Should I add the award to her transcript or should she contact the school and somehow add it to her application materials? It was a significant award that comes with a nice check and a presentation by one of the Hemingway family members.
  18. Well, if it makes you feel any better, on our move a few years ago we had a U-Haul and our truck pulling a borrowed trailer. The trailer lost a wheel. We had to drive about 20 miles out of our way to buy a new wheel for a trailer we didn't own. Then we arrived at our new house after dark. The U-Haul got stuck in sand halfway up the quarter-mile driveway. Due to its weight, we had to call the special heavy duty tow truck to pull out the U-Haul. +$300. Then we had to pay for an extra day on the U-Haul as it still needed to be unloaded. Worst - when we finally got into the house it was crawling with german cockroaches - hundreds and hundreds of them! :)
  19. I didn't see anything in the first link that said you would be earning a high school diploma. In our state you would not earn a diploma, those are awarded by the school system. However, in this country you don't need a diploma very often so it really isn't an issue. What you put on your high school transcript is up to you and what college credits would be awarded by CLEP scores would be up to the specific colleges. We have never studied for an exam and counted that as a class. We take a class and sometimes add an exam (CLEP, SAT II, etc.) There is a general assumption that a certain number of hours have been completed in order to earn a high school credit (120-180 hours.) That doesn't mean it cannot be done differently in your homeschool.
  20. My younger dd had an extra math and she received her scores on the first day. ETA: I'm talking about the current ACT test earlier this month.
  21. My dd is hoping for a one-and-done. She is applying this week. We will have her DE transcript sent as soon as the Summer A grades are posted. Her last final was yesterday. I sent her ACT scores yesterday and will have her homeschool transcript in the mail by the end of the week. It's hard to believe we could be pretty much done in a few days. She may decide to take the ACT one more time in September in order to try for more merit aid, if she gets a higher score she will have a scholarship application to fill out, other than that I guess we would be done until next May. I'm a little worried she might later wish she had applied to a few more places. I'm on the fence about pushing the idea a bit. Her choice is a really good fit for her.
  22. I think they have one every 3 months. There was one last September as well.
  23. My dd didn't have any issues taking 3000 level classes early, so long as there was no prerequisite. She took a lit class and a science class. She especially enjoyed the discussion level of the 3000 lit class. I have always regretted not taking a class taught by James Michener spring of my freshman year. I was going to wait until my sophomore year and he stopped teaching due to health reasons at the end of that year.
