  1. Do you own over the counter reading glasses? They are basically just slight magnifying glasses, right? At what age did you purchase them? I'm thinking about buying a pair today. I may make an appointment for the eye doctor, but I think I am just getting old and simply need reading glasses to read those tiny words that appear on medicine bottles and house cleaning products. I wanted to spray paint my outdoor furniture today and cannot read the directions on the back of the can. Nor can I find a magnifying glass anywhere. Would a pair of cheap reading glasses likely do the trick?
  2. Hmm, I'm still not sure that I see any difference in the end. Some people have to pay and others don't. Some of the credits will transfer and some won't (but that is all dependent upon where the student chooses to go to college after high school.) In all of the scenarios the student remains a high school student earning college credits and will have the option to enter college as a freshman. Is that true? What is the purpose of separating which term is used when discussing college classes taken in high school? There are so many different terms. Is it just curiosity? Or when speaking of non-matriculated are we separating out the university credits from the community college credits? Or is it something else I am still not seeing? So, my eldest dd actually earned 72 non-matriculated (which they call non-degree seeking) credits at university and 45 dual enrollment credits at the local community college. The university has a rule that only allows a maximum of 30 credits per year, though you can start any age with the proper test scores. You can take as many credits as you want at the community college though only for your junior and senior years. Every college/university in Florida sets their own terms, however, homeschoolers are required to receive the same options as public schooled students at each college - basically it is all free. To the best of my knowledge, all of the credits are treated the same throughout the state of Florida. My second dd's credits will all be dual enrollment from the local community college. :)
  3. What is the difference between DE and being a non-matriculated student? Isn't it primarily different wording for the same thing?
  4. Yes, the university accepted 114 of her semester credits (half came from the university itself so they were obviously going to be accepted.) She could have graduated in one year. However, she has decided to get a combo master/bachelor degree along with a second bachelor and a minor. She has a state scholarship that runs for four years and wanted to take full advantage of it.
  5. It depends on where you live. The state of FL has an equivalency chart. 3 credit hour US history or American Lit classes would only count as a .5 high school credit, but Comp I counts as 1 high school credit. It does get confusing. We choose to follow our state's equivalency chart whenever issuing high school credits.
  6. My dd is doing the CLEP for English because it gives her college credit for Comp I and Comp II where the AP would only give credit for Comp I and a general Intro to Lit class. We also like CLEPs because they can be taken whenever the student is ready as opposed to one specific day each year.
  7. Thanks, Fifiruth. I will definitely be listing the individual college classes on her high school transcript, as she needs the credits in order to graduate. I just wasn't sure whether or not to mention her receiving her Associate degree somewhere on the transcript. I think I'm going to leave that off, as it doesn't really have anything to do with high school credits or high school graduation.
  8. Thanks, Lori. I think we will leave it off. I was just wondering if others put it on their high school transcript, before deciding ourselves which way to go. We would have to add an anticipated date as she won't have it yet when we mail out the application transcripts and it doesn't really have anything to do with the high school side of things. Hopefully, she can mention it somewhere else on the applications. Or maybe it will have an anticipated date on the college transcript itself.
  9. We are doing level 7 this year. I really like it. We dropped the science since she takes an online science class and we dropped the CM English assignments - dictation, narration, etc. The books were great and we added in two of the suggested books - Women in a Material World and Man Eating Bugs. My dd is more of a non-fiction reader and is getting more into geography than she has ever been. The map drills have really solidified her knowledge of where all of the countries are located and the world religions readings have rounded out the subject. She writes one page papers every other week which have improved throughout the year and does any art projects that strike her fancy. She uses the schedule as-is, but we simply work through it one day at a time so she isn't necessarily doing each week's work in one week or doing the assignment on the day of the week listed.
  10. The Alcumus is optional/extra credit. She spends four or five hours a week on homework. She does like the teacher. She says the class is OK, more informative than engaging (for her.) If there is too much chat the teacher will shut down the chat box completely. My dd is not gifted nor does she love math, but she does like science and the math is necessary. She is a very solid student and is looking at engineering in college.
  11. If your student earned an AA through dual enrollment did you list that anywhere on the high school transcript? Or did you add that somewhere else within the college application?
  12. That won't be true for every college in FL. Neither of the colleges in our county have the nine semester rule, though they do have their own rules.
  13. My dd is taking it this year. I did not sit in on any classes, however, we were happy enough to sign her up for AOPS Algebra I next fall. She probably spends 60 to 90 minutes per day on math (including class time) and another two hours per week on Alcumus. She is a solid math student, though her interest in math is primarily as it relates to her science classes.
  14. I've used a bunch over the years. That was before the prices jumped though. I like it fine. But, we use it as a supplement and I don't think I would pay the current price. We liked the history, animation, world issues and creative writing lessons. The science was very weak.
  15. Florida (some counties begin in 9th or earlier.) Our county doesn't pay for tuition, fees or books, but we might be the only one.
  16. I may have missed this in an earlier post, but why are the only two choices full time early college or staying home? Does your state not offer dual enrollment so that he can retain his freshman status and choose whether to go full or part time? I would ask around locally about the quality of the math classes at the CC, ours are good and the students feed into the state flagship without issue.
  17. Did you send in a transcript of the first three years at the end of junior year and then a second final transcript?
  18. Can you designate the classes you want for your Core 16?
  19. My dd uses the fitness center regularly. She is a member of the fencing club and two sign language clubs. She also uses the languages lab where students can make arrangements with fluent speakers of different languages for extra speaking practice or work on their writing, etc. She wanted to join the choir, but their practices have been at the same time as one of her classes the last two semesters. Nearly all college/university activities are open to DE students here.
  20. I put other. My kids do them, but I don't consider them important childhood experiences. I've never hosted more than one child at a time over to our house for a sleepover. The kids have done sleepover parties at others' before. Their parents must have more patience than I do.
  21. You will want to check with the colleges. My dd's does require the SAT II or its equivalent in the foreign language for admittance into the university even if foreign language isn't required for the specific degree.
  22. If I were doing a transcript by year I would list Spanish I and II as high school credits taken before high school (8th grade) and Spanish III and IV as 9th grade credits.
  23. We did college tours last week over spring break and every college encouraged the students to try and submit the student portion of the applications over the summer. Most of their applications open around July 1st. At least one of the colleges already has the new essay prompt on their website on the freshman application page.
