  1. What is the name of the -any- children's book that goes through the history of Christmas (I believe?) and starts with the Romans and Saturnalia/ pine tree decorations in the home? Thank you! It is driving me nuts.
  2. Reading these words again tonight
  3. We are listening in the car. Fun book! Thanks for the suggestion!
  4. Sheesh, don't these people want to look themselves (and their children) in the eye? - If that is indeed what he was doing. I remeber once my dsd came out of the grocery store happy bc the cashier had given her too much change and I immediatly thought "this is a character test" and marched her back in to get it all straight  OP- I have been annoyed with TRU also and rarely go there. Also wondering if we have reached capacity lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law
  5. How would these classes work for a family that uses secular material?
  6. I had two immediate thoughts: our bubbles are not always academic, which i am sure you know but you could have shocked the mess out of me the other night at gymnastics when I was listening to a mom talk about moving so her boys could be on the team- they.are.seven. And she moved (as in different cities) so they could be in gymnastics?! At seven? And another parent has had their child in since he was two. TWO? they have activities for two year olds?! But see- That is just me because clearly no one else was batting an eye. But I was thinking who are these people. We just started a few months ago so it is all foreign to me. I am sure they are thinking their own thoughts about me and "why is she starting so late!" or something. (ds is 7) And my other thought was ds12 went to preschool and was sent home his first little evaluation thingy where it had Counts to :---- and my lovely little booger went all the way up to 6. Because that is all he felt like that day he said. At the time I was a little embarrassed but now I can get it. Counting is dull especially when you know you know it. There are much more interesting things to do at 4! Anyway, I am sure by 30 they will all be able to count and you wont be able to tell who could do it at 5 or 9. :) (this is what I tell myself when I start to have anxiety attacks). I remember when I had my child tested and I ignored the results at first for a while. Then I felt almost sheepish bc I felt like I had to tell my friend "he tested gifted in reading" bc she was so sad her boy didnt read like mine and I was recommending books he loved and they were all falling flat. I honestly thought it was a case of if you leave a child alone and not send them to school look what they can do! Still not entirely convinced bc how can he be gifted and then ask me questions like "where do I put this?" when we are packing a suitcase in the middle of the floor and have been all morning and he knows we are leaving and I just asked him to get his pajamas and put them in the suitcase or he gets out of the shower with a dry head. (fwiw- this was not an IQ test but rather an achievement test)
  7. I just always said "Aack! Don't use your fingers! Look (covering the numbers) it is 9+4 and you know that...what is it?" FWIW it is why we stoped Xtra math for one child bc he learned to count really really fast. I would rather him think it through (9+4=9+1+3). Do you think it may have to do with her not understanding how to break numbers up to add them?
  8. We tried Chapter 1. Ds liked it a lot! (and that is saying something because he is not so fond of math) But he kept missing everything...So then when it got to the review he missed most of them again. :glare:
  9. Ha! I have started to just reply with it, neutrally "because I am the meanest mom in the world" or "I am the Baddest Person Ever" I have been having fun coming up with different ways to express it  It isn't even my 12 yo. It is my 7 yo! "YOU aaaalllllwaaaays so no to meeee" Me: "well ask me something I can say yes to then" sheesh.
  10. When my oldest was one or two -maybe three, I dont know, we went to a once a week story time at Barnes and Noble and these two moms used to talk through the whole thing. One time a dad showed up and said "Hey you two, stop talking. This time is for the kids" in a really annoyed tone. That took care of it.
  11. Awwww. Adorable !!!! I want to find a puppy!
  12. That looks good! Interested as well. Guess that class is too late tho.
  13. Thanks! Todays meeting went better bc the kids used distance to do the missions- and they completed 2 1/2 that way. Which is more than we have done so far. sigh. It is so frustrating and even today after they had it running well it went all haywire. It is a comedy of errors. lol. I will check into that program, thank you so much! If that does not work I might email you Pixie. We are using NXT. Thanks again!
  14. (which incidentally does anyone else refer to FLL all the time as First Language Lessons?) How do you make it work!?!?!?! I have watched everything I can find- read, etc. But it is still gets caught on gray areas. And the numbers are so high? I thought they would be between 0-100 but they are nearly 300-600. Whats that about? If these questions are stupid, I apologize. I know nothing about mindstorms and have been thrust into a more active role than I anticipated. ANyone know? I feel really bad bc the kids on our team were all excited in the beginning of the season and now they all dread it. They like the project part but the robot- nothing seems to be working for them and it is discouraging. They know how to program but since it was acting all wacky I thought I would do a little research on that.
  15. My ds just started recreational gymnastics class the beg of September but last week he got a letter asking if we wanted to go to pre-team. I am reading all these new words here and feeling a bit :confused1: ....LOL. I usupposeit will become clearer -or not. He seems to love it, but I never really thought of it as a team thing, just something we would do on Monday nights. What are all these levels? What ages do kids compete? Why is it so expensive? This preteam class tho- some things are scary for him. He is 7. He hates pullovers, anything o the bars i think. Or anything really high. lol. So I guess we will see if he will even want to continue. I will feel a little sad if he doesn't b/c he *was* having so much fun and I do think it is good for him. I wonder if they pushed him too fast? To only be in rec for 4-6 weeks. Is that ok? I watched him in class tonight and he had a blast. But he will prob spend the next day or so ruminating about all the scary things he has to do and maybe he would just rather go back to his *other* class and *why* did he pay attention so well anyway.... Anyway it has been interesting, if somewhat confusing, to read all these.
  16. I thought they were handy-downs instead of hand-me-downs for the longest time. At 2 my son would say he bumped his "twohead" because, you know he was not yet four I guess  I let it go on for a while bc it was so cute but then taught it the right way <3
  17. That one reminded me that my sister told me she took my ds7, her dd6 and her ds4 out on the beach for an early morning/or maybe late night walk and my son announces "I am AWESOME and I have got the biggest p@nis here" :hurray:  :confused1: No idea where he got that from. none. And I did not follow up either. Except i dont think it fits the topic since it sounded bad and was bad! lol. but they were all clothed and everything. He just kind of yelled it out then went back to the chase game in the sand.
  18. Do we have to take the kids? :leaving: OH! Or are they going on the super awesome educational vacation and we go to an isolated tropical beach and sip fruity drinks while the TV network cleans, declutters, adn organizes? Perfect!

    Ugly Pie

See? you all needed that pie at home!! I love pecan pie! Makes sense about the chocolate  Glad it was a success overall!
  20. My ds loved this so much we are going through it again. He was only in frist grade - legos are a great idea. I guess I thought I would pick sentences from stories he is reading and pay attention to developmentally what would be too hard, etc. We are just on the parent/grandparents right now bc I forget...duh!
