UPDATE; My mild concussion...you can’t make this up

So last night at approximately 11 PM, a 1 x 3 reclaimed wood art piece entitled “hope” and made by a friend (which I will be burning LOL), and approximately 20 pounds somehow came off the wall from hanging above our bed and hit me in the head. True story. It’s been there 3 years. Sigh.

I was asleep.  My husband wasn’t yet in bed, so I texted him LOL and asked him to bring me ice. I slept ok but woke up this morning and felt very off....sluggish, dazed, very fatigued and uncoordinated as well as pretty nauseous. I knew something was wrong and was a good girl and went to urgent care, they fast tracked us to the ER. The CT scan showed no brain bleed Or skull fracture (duh) but obviously I have a mild concussion. And high blood pressure.

 I already feel less foggy than this AM when I started to cry during neuro exam  because follow my finger and touch your nose is hard when your brain hurts.  I forgot what she told me to do. Seems stupid now. But it’s hard to explain how foggy and hard things are. 

I’m clearing my work schedule thru next Monday, resting in a dark room and very much avoiding screens - except for now and work related essentials and googling concussion stuff.  Seriously hours of resting so far I’m mostly resting/napping and listening to silly tv)  also drinking a lot of water, and Tylenol.  

Any tips?  I read fish oil is helpful and eating protein.  And all the dark quiet simple rest. Don’t have energy to google much so thought I’d ask the Hive professionals. 

I’m dictating this so any weird grammar or punctuation issues aren’t my fault. 😜

When my dd had a mild concussion, she had to rest in a darkened room, avoid screens, loud noises for quite some time before she recovered. I'm not sure a week will do it. You don't want to overdo it on the recovery. We shut the blinds and covered the front door window with a purple plastic disposable tablecloth (sounds silly, I know, but it was the first thing we thought of, had on hand, and worked well - it did cast a slightly purplish light on the foyer, but it wasn't bad). I think she stayed in doing basically nothing for a week - week and a half. After that, she only did a little bit - and then was very cautious and we returned home if she started to get even slightly fatigued.

That's awful! Not a good wake up at all.

If you can find someone who is familiar with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (hbot),, that might be worth trying especially if your symptoms don't go away. Football players are starting to use it. I think Joe Namath did. Insurance probably won't pay, though. Shai Efrati and colleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel have been studying hbot as a treatment for traumatic brain injuries and concussions for awhile now. There are some MDs who are using it here in the US as well. If interested, you'd do a search for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in your area.

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) uses light to help repair tissue and tamp down inflammation. That might be worth considering, too. Michael Hamblin at Harvard has been researching this for quite awhile. He's the dude who knows all about PBMT. Very cool stuff. Will probably be key to treating Alzheimer's. Joovv is a brand of light that might work but I don't know how it would be used or which light you would use. I would think you could use one of the cheaper, smaller lights that they sell. Hamblin is one of the advisors for Joovv.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is definitely proven to help some medical conditions, including wounds that don't heal and even lingering infections.  My dh had it daily for 5 weeks last summer, and thankfully, our insurance paid for all of it!  I assume it needs to be in a medically certified clinic/hospital though, and ordered by a doctor.

If you still have symptoms after the week, you need more recovery time. Symptoms include a returning headache, which was the last thing to go for my son. He had a more severe concussion, but it took much longer than I expected for him to be recovered.

Consider N-Acetyl Cysteine to aid brain recovery. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3989181/ (that's the first study that came up when I googled, but there is quite a lot of research about it's use with brain injuries) 

I wish I had known of it earlier with my son.  It's very safe to take, but take it with vitamin C to help the body process the cysteine.

Update....

so it’s been 10 days.  I will say this is no joke. Not at all. 

 I’ve been in bed in a quiet, dark or dimly lit room for 90% of the time… very low stimulation. The last 2-3 days I’ve had a lamp on and have been doing a few household chores. Shocking how much I have slept- and the direct correlation between overstimulation headaches and fatigue. 

 I’m taking rest and quiet pretty seriously as other people in my life have shared with me their stories and advice. Have taken two short walks but otherwise haven’t left the house.

Taking CBD oil, NAC, magnesium, Fish Oil and Tumeric and now on a Ketogenic Diet and DH is taking me for craniosacral  massage tonight.

Before my brain used to be an 18 lane super highway (self employed and extremely busy) and it was suddenly reduced to a one lane dirt path, walking barefoot. I can’t articulate how shocking the difference is- literally overnight. One thing at a time and slow, is the motto. 

It gives me a new and profound respect for how intricate and complex the brain really is.  And I thought I’d share what it feels like from the inside out.

Yup.  All these books and movies with characters having multiple head injuries (like Nancy Drew who may have blacked out in nearly every book?) make it seem like head injuries are no big deal.   Alas, that’s not so. 

I hope you will get a lot better. 

Maybe update your thread title and OP to reflect your new awareness that it’s not a joke

I'm so sorry to hear you're still recovering, but I'm glad you're taking it seriously. I had a mild concussion in September and the recovery was slow and long - I finally felt like my thinking was back in April. Please don't rush it - you're doing everything right!
