Miscarriage scare today, still pretty concerned....

So since I have a history of m/c, I asked my midwife to run serial HCG's. Betweem the first and second one, it dropped from 85000 to 70000. It is normally supposed to come close to or actually double. Of course, that totally freaked me out and I went for an ultrasound. I am around 9-10 weeks pregnant. The baby is wiggling around and has a normal heartbeat, the yolk sac looks healthy and normal, and the blood flow looks good. FWIW, I also tend to have low progesterone during pregnancy and have not been able to get a presciption this time due to insurance issues, which have finally been worked out.

The office where I went for the u/s called the midwife and gave her the same report that I posted above. The midwife said that this could be a normal level for me, for me to keep using the progesterone cream I bought when I could not get the prescription, and that she is going to re-check the HCG and progesterone level. I have to go in to the lab tomorrow for the tests.

Obviously, I am still concerned as I know it is possible for a m/c to happen at any time. I hope and pray that all goes well and that the baby is healthy and born at term. I cannot imagine losing this little one, especially after seeing the movement and hearing the heartbeat.

I am not really asking anything, just sharing. We haven't told many people because we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to hopefully be sure that everything is going to go well. I would appreciate prayers for good test results and a healthy pregnancy. Thanks for listening!

Beta hCG levels off and starts falling around 10-ish weeks, so your levels appear normal. At this stage, an u/s is a far, far better indicator of the health of the pregnancy according to one of my old doctors, who is a nationally-known expert in recurrent pregnancy loss.

See, e.g., the chart and especially the graph of beta values over time here. Your levels appear to be well within the normal range. (note that the rest of this particular page is discussing doubling beta values in the context of testing very early on, which is not at all applicable at 9-10w.) There are numerous other beta charts on the web describing normal values, and there is quite a wide range of normal that far into the pregnancy.

It sounds like everything is going well. I'm sorry for the scare. Good luck!!

:iagree: My specialist won't draw series HCG after 8 weeks. U/S is better.

Did the same lab run both tests? I was told when I was doing serial HCGs to make sure that I went to the same lab for all bloodwork or the values could vary.

Yes, the same lab ran both tests. I also went in today for another progesterone and HCG check, we will have results tomorrow. I have been pretty peaceful about it today, especially since reading that breastfeeding can also alter levels. I am still nursing my 15-month-old.

Off to read those charts! Thanks for the information.
