Pongo
A Schultüte, it's a school cone. My kids LOVED it last year and I think I started a tradition (I'm not German tho.) Do you have or done any "back to school" stuff? For more information on the Schultüte. I use a thick piece of wallpaper paper and then I lay several sheets of tissue paper around the opening (glued). After is dries I fill it and hold the tissue paper at the top and pop a bow on it.
Mary in NJ
I lived in Germany. Typically, these are given to the children who are just entering school. Children who have been in school already do not receive one. But hey, we are homeschoolers and can give one every year if we want to. They are cute and can be so much fun to fill up. For anyone who has not seen one, think of a cone that is large, it is filled up with erasers, pencils, crayons, snacks, etc. They are so cute! Have fun making one ! Joyfully, Mary
WyoSylvia
How funny, I just learned about these in the last few weeks and had planned to do one. Thanks for the reminder. I hope I can find things to put into it!
Plaid Dad
We've already started our school year, but my dd may be going to a cottage school part-time in the fall. If she does, I plan to get her a new backpack with lots of goodies. I remember the little boy in a family I rented a room from in Hamburg getting his Schultüte - very sweet! Joyfully, Mary They are too cute to give just once ;) . I also add for my girls hair bows and chocolate, and for my ds toss in a few hot wheels and bubble gum. I think of it as a combination of a Christmas stocking and the beginning of the school year gift. I also take the whole gang out to lunch, thats more of a gift for me I should say :001_smile:
abbeyej
Yep, we've done a version of these every year (even though it's not really the traditional way, lol)... My kids really look forward to them!

Chris in VA
I use posterboard with tissue paper for ours. Don't know if I'll give one this year or not, but they sure are fun!
Quiver0f10
I am just making up gift bags that I got from the $ store. Nothing fancy, but it's the first year we are doing it. I am excited!
Denise in IN
This is such a fun idea! I think I'll do it this year, although I may go with Jean's idea of gift bags (I am SO non-crafty).
Targhee
This is a tradition in my family when kids begin school!!! I didn't do one for DD last year because we started K mid-year, but I am planning on doing one this year.:001_smile:

I made one out of blue poster board, rolled, stapled, and trimmed into a cone shape. I pasted on the front a lion's head made from yellow/gold cardstock with fringe around it for a mane, filled it with goodies, and tied tissue paper shut at the top. Sweet! I should do the same for little dd next month when she starts K. And maybe for dd (15) when she goes back to school since she missed out on the tradition altogether. She'd get a kick out of it, I think.
hsing1
What a cute idea! We do a treasure hunt for school supplies on the first day of school. It's a lot of fun.:)
melmac
Thanks so much for sharing, my kiddoes would love something like this. Wish I had heard of it sooner. :)
kls126s
I've never heard of this, but we do get a pile of new school goodies. (Nothing like passing on the office supply stuff fetish to the next generation. :D ) This is a really cute presentation though, and I'll do it this year. We've already started our next year, but we're moving late in the summer, so we'll stop and get moved, then set up our very first school room. This will be a good way to celebrate (re)starting school in a new school room.

yslek
I had completely forgotten about Shultüten! I remember getting one on my first day of 1st grade in Germany. My little sister got a little one, so she wouldn't feel left out. :) I never thought about doing this for my own dc; what a great idea! Thanks! :) Kelsy
sadiegirl
My kids received their first one last year(grades 5th and 6th) and at the end of this year, they were already asking if I was going to do it for this upcoming year. They loved their cones! These are some of the items that I put in them last year and some of the items that I am putting in them this year. glue post-it notes bookmarks stickers(I found Avatar for my son at the Dollar Tree and he will be soooo excited!) Scooby Doo, Cars, etc. St. Louis Cardinals cotton boxer shorts(KMart...hey, kids always need new underwear!) candy, mints new book to start for independent reading(fiction or this year I am doing an Illinois bird-watching book for my 7th grader!) posters new notebooks, misc. school supplies like pencils, erasers, tape for their dispensers, clips to mark pages, pack of colored index cards little science-related experiments I picked up at homeschool conference I think it is a great start to our year and I simply take a piece of poster board and shape it into a cone and decorate with stickers, ribbon and other knick-knacks. I also shut the door to our school room for about 2 weeks before school begins and hang new posters, add some new things to our classroom and place their books on their desks. Then, on our first day of school, we go thru all the new items I have picked for our year and let them what we have planned for our year. I pick up experiments, DVDs, games, and fun workbooks to have as well as our main subjects. Here's to hoping we all have a fun year!!! Hmmm any ideas what to put in them for those ages?? They don't care to much for school supplies anymore.... thats my feddish!:D
Kim in SouthGa
earrings, candy, socks....for Easter baskets I make up coupons for things like "no math today", "lunch with Dad", "ice cream pit stop"....my kids love it. You could just do a real small one out of cardstock and put in a few items and some coupons. Maybe even gift certificates to McD or their favorite fast food restraunt. hth
