For Readers: Frog and Toad The Fire Cat Bargain for Frances (my ds even likes this--not just for girls) If your family reads bible stories I highly recommend The Beginner's Bible. I didn't like the cartoon pictures, but ds didn't seem to mind at all. He loved it and now suddenly likes to read all kinds of books. The Beg. Bible gave him a lot of confidence and pride. I saw someone reference The Westing Game- really? For K-3? I don't think my young ones would have any interest and it's a murder mystery, I thought it was or older kids? Most of our favorites have already been listed. A few that haven't been: Rabbit Hill by Robert Lawson Socks by Beverly Cleary Ronia The Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgren The Moffats by Eleanor Estes Betsy books by Carolyn Haywood The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith and Nim's Island by Wendy Orr. I'll list some that were our favorites that maybe others haven't mentioned: The Cottage by Bantry Bay, Francie on the Run and Pegeen by Hilda Von Stockum. Lovely, lovely stories about a little boy, Francie, growing up Ireland. Finn Family Moomintroll series - these have been a perrenial favorite here through many children. The Great Brain series - the whole family enjoyed listening to these. My kids liked the Snipp,Snapp and Snurr books and the Flicka, Ricka and Dicka books for first readers (after gaining proficiency in phonetic readers).
