  1. The Alcatraz Series by Brandon Sanderson The Tripods Series by John Christopher The Lemony Snickett Books My son likes the same and he devoured all of these this year. Also Leviathan by Scott Westerfield is really great.
  2. For the age of your kids I say Usbourne, I bought KF the first year and too dry for him, he is learning a lot more with usbourne and I'll use KF for logic stage.
  3. I pull the cover all the way back and if it still comes out looking bad I cut the top off.
  4. We had issues at the beginning, when he was five. Then it was smooth sailing till the end, which happened over the summer, just after he turned seven. I did it 4 or 5 days a week, depending on the lesson and our life.
  5. You know, you're right. I think those 4 Hugs I had last night were not enough, especially with how today is gone. Where is that box again?
  6. My son has really enjoyed them. If you don't want them, I'll pay to have them shipped to me. :001_smile:
  7. We enjoy going out to see local bands on Saturday nights. We also have friends over for games and drinks on Sunday evenings. Not every week, but those are the things we try to do as "date nights".
  8. My son really enjoyed the rhyming words ones when he was six last year.
  9. I got very tired of all the strips about the house for Saxon 1 last year, so this year I am trying one meeting strip, blown up to full page size, in a page protector mounted to construction paper. I am hoping this will a.)reduce mess and b.)and some fun and interest to our math studies.:001_smile:
  10. I think it is quite rude of her to order the books over the internet, knowing you had paid full price, then ask you to share with her until she gets her book in. Since you had the previous conversation with her, that was quite obviously. imho, her intent when she ordered the books off net, to use yours while she had to wait since she knew you already had it. I am not one to stand for such manipulation from my friends anymore, but that is a personal choice. I feel you should suggest other avenues to her - like the college library already suggested. It is not fair to your child to have to rush thru his work, or fair to you to be in a position where you feel you must pay for copies or inconvienence your son in order to fix a decision she made. I hope you make her fix it without using you, because she is trying to use you thru your kindness right now, imo.
  11. Thank you both for your ideas. I tried to give ya rep, sweetbaby, but I'm getting the spread it around message.
  12. How many times do you schedule this in a week? We want to go thru the book as a family in the evenings, and it looks pretty short and to the point, but I want to really learn the information and not overwhelm my seven year old, so I was wondering about how many times to do Latin a week? Any opinions are welcome and appreciated.:001_smile:
  13. Since I voted other, I must explain. And I've been fighting popcorn cravings all evening, darn it! Anyway, I like mine with quite a bit of butter, old bay, dill, Italian seasoning, little bit of salt and pepper because they are in the other things. My pizza seasoning grinder inspired me to put Parmesan cheese in it, which is also good.:001_smile:
  14. Nope. I'm not. Will choose own selections from current reading. My son likes to balk at writing, so best to blend it in with our literature.
  15. an almost perfect day ends with a shouting match over bedtime? We made up, and all is well, but I'm still mad at myself for yelling back. Oh well, tomorrow is a new day.:tongue_smilie:
  16. I will pray for you. I don't have a lot of advice, except to say that when/if he gets better again, maybe a support group can be found for him? I don't know what options you would have in your area, but maybe helping him find a group that involves others like him would help him make some friends. If not in the area, maybe an internet support group would be an option? Just a suggestion, I'm really out of my depth here. :grouphug:
  17. I second homeschool tracker. I've got the basic version and really like it, so I will be buying plus when I can afford it.
  18. This past year it was just SOTW 1 maps, and I agree with Peela, he's learned a lot from them, and it is easy for him to understand because there's only a few things on each map. Next year we will continue with SOTW, but I am afraid about his total lack of US knowledge, so we'll be doing the holling books casually, as well as plotting famous landmarks on our world map, and learning the states by using flashcards and a small map that we will color in the states on as we learn them. Will probably plot paddle's journey on there as well.
  19. It's not entirely wordless. There's a moving picture involved. Link in me siggy.
  20. Saxon. I'll be putting together a portable circle to help teach the meeting this week. Have to crack open the Saxon 2 box and see what needs to be there, so I know what history/geography I can add to it.
  21. We're going into second grade. I just did a chart for SOTW1 with Our Island story, Viking Tales, Scotland's Story and The Blue Fairy Book. Also Paddle to the Sea, and maybe another of the Holling books from the library, there's a place to write it in. We'll see how it goes. My son loves being read to, so I'm trying to do more of it next year, and I'm not good at picking up books from the library. I could send you the chart if you like, it would be a scan of a handwritten one tho.
  22. He's 16, what's the end of compulsory education in NC? In MD, I think it is 16. At that point, it is the parents (or child's) choice whether they finish school. High school is a tough place, and it's doubly hard if you don't belong to a club or social group, kwim? If that was the case for him, as it seems to be, then let him do what he feels he is good at for now. Every one has different levels to their aspirations. Learning to play "real" guitar hurts, a lot. Developing calluses anywhere hurts till they are established. I've played guitar for 10 years, and I've played Guitar Hero. Totally different skill set, the only thing that is marginally the same is hand position. Frustrating.
  23. Being honest, the top obsession is books. Followed by guitars - I don't have room for anymore between mine and dh's. I ::try:: to play all seven of them, but it just doesn't happen anymore. :tongue_smilie:
  24. :iagree: wholeheartedly. In addition, johnandtinagilbert, abortion is NOT a free pass. Far from it. I understand that you have your own experiences with this issue, but from my personal experience and those of some of my friends, be assured that we know we are murderers. It is not a fun choice to live with. At all. I am sure that some people don't learn from their mistakes, and it could be construed that way, but you have no way of knowing what is in their heart of hearts. You have no way of knowing how much guilt they carry around. You can't know from the surface, no one can. I am going to stop now, because this is a very personal topic for me, but I will say that I am trying very hard not to take serious offense to some of the sweeping generalizations made in this topic. I do appreciate the ability to be open about such a touchy topic, however.:tongue_smilie:
