It's a game that is sort of limitless on what you can do as far as building and such. It really spurs the imagination. Building things, fighting things (although it isn't bloody), create new worlds and so on. I'm told you're supposed to save up things you collect as you travel through the environments so you can fight the "End Dragon" and get to the final world.

Or something like that.

My 9 year old DD is really into it and watches YouTube videos about it to get better and learn tricks. So does my 8 year old sdd, but not quite as much. I've read about it and have tried to play with her, but.....honestly, I don't really get it either.

It doesn't seem to do much harm, except that she'd play all day every day if I let her (I don't, of course). The reviews are pretty positive, and it definitely spurs the imagination, rather than just being some mind-numbing game.

Yeah, you have to basically farm for materials . . . you can dig rocks, kill animals for meat, grow things . . . you can build buildings . . some version there are monsters that can kill you, some versions you can kill each other . . . but i think of it a little like legos, you can make whatever you can think up. Its also a virtual social world for geeky kids, if you let them play on servers. Its not a win/lose game, its open-ended

For some reason I can't wrap my brain around it. What is it? What's the point?

My DH and DD love it and have built some cool things. I don't have any interest in playing myself, but I still appreciate the creativity and teamwork it inspires (they're on a shared server and play with my BIL and some other people).

It's a construction game. Kids have to find raw materials and figure out how to put them together to make construction materials, then they can construct whatever they want. All of this occurs in an environment with other players who are online. I think of it as virtual social Lego. My sons came home from a Six Flags park one weekend and spent the next week building a virtual replica of the park in Minecraft for their friends to play in.

Virtual Legos, I guess? My 11 and 13 year olds are really into it. There was some free version that they could play on their iTouches, but they've ended up purchasing the PC and Apple versions. Ds plays with his best Scout friend, but otherwise, I don't let them network, other than with each other (and have sent them to their own servers and forbidden playing with each other when there was too much bickering when playing on the same game).

Oh I love minecraft! My husband is a computer programmer and is into every geeky game out there. I played it with him and a few friends and I was not good, I kept accidentally lighting our house on fire, or I made a house out of ice and then accidentally melted it, or I drown in lava.

I dont play anymore because it's a huge time sink, and I have no time ;) but my 4 yr old and 6 year old love it, and we allow them to play once or time a week.

DS showed me some very funny YouTube videos of people accidentally burning down their houses. I was wondering whether or not they were staged, but msybe not.

The game has tremendous building capabilities. Kind of like Legos plus snap circuits plus other stuff. DS likes to build things where he has to figure out some kind of mechanisms. He built a solar power unit, a casino and is now working on a random dungeon creator that will have different passageways each time someone goes through it. He also plays with his local friend and they chat typing or via Skype.

I admit when I first looked at it, the blocky graphics did not impress me. It has surprising versatility though. I think virtual sandbox is a good conceptual description.

My kids and husband love it. My 10 year old goes on and on and on and on about it. Him telling me another thing about minecraft is like nails on a chalkboard. I don't know how much longer I can smile and nod my head and pretend I care anything about it. But I guess it was worth the $20 in birthday money he paid, I don't think he's touched any other video game in months.
