Impish
So, I'm finally getting my Dogue de Bordeaux after 10 yrs of wanting. She'll be here the wk of July 21st. My stoopid internet charges me by uploads and dl's, so I can't post a pic of the breed here (if someone else wants to, please feel free!) but most ppl recognize the breed as being the 'Turner and Hootch' dog. (No, they don't really drool like that, it was done w/egg whites and salt tablets for the movie). So, I need a girl name for a big, red, French Mastiff. It cannot start w/a 'c' or 'k' sound, nor end in an 'ie' sound. If I were getting a boy, I'd name him 'Fezzik' after Andre the Giant's character in Princess Bride. I was thinking 'Ember', but Wolf's 'meh' on that, so want to give him some options. oasis
Congrats on your new puppy! :001_smile: I think Ember is really cute; from the list below, I like Seraphina. This is from www.thinkbabynames.com: Aruna ... "Crystalline reddish-brown." ... Auburn ... "Moderate or reddish brown." Aven ... yellow or reddish flowers. Begonia ... pink or red blossoms ... Carnation ... The original colour of the flower was said to be as red as flesh ... Cinnabar ... It is a deep brownish red in color. Coral ... often deep pink to red in color ... [13] Garnet ... A dark red gemstone named for the pomegranate that the garnet crystals resemble ... [4] Nurit ... "A plant with yellow or red flowers." Phoenix ... "Dark red." ... [3] Reed ... "Red-haired." [4] Robin ... probably with the red-breasted songbird in mind ... [21] Ross ... May also be derived from the Gaelic word for "red". [1] Rowan ... "Red-berry tree." [3] Ruby ... "The red gemstone." ... [11] Rufina ... "Red haired." ... [4] Sandy ... Also a nickname for someone with light reddish-brown hair. [4] Scarlett ... "Red." ... [3] Seraphina ... "Burning ones." ... [7] Siena ... The town gave its name to a reddish shade of brown. [1] Suri ... Also possibly (Persian) "red rose" ... Ula ... "Wealthy; gem of the sea; sacred red." ... [4] Vanessa ... The name of a genus of butterflies that includes the Red Admiral and the Painted Lady ... [50] Edited June 7, 2012 by oasis
Ellie
Congratulations!!! What is the French (or Latin?) for flame? or fire? or "heckabigdog"?
Danestress
Cause she will be a goddess, for one. Also because of the recent transit and that it is a great name for a big red head.
swellmomma
Of the list posted above I really love Seraphina Or Amber This site has a list of 20,000 dog names for that breed of dog
Impish
Seraphina is too close to a ppl name we have in the family, so that won't work. I like the name Phoenix, but it would prob get shortened to 'Fee', which wouldn't work. Hmmm...
MariannNOVA
Finola If dh had come home with a female puppy, I think dd would have named her Finola.
Liz CA
I am linking a pic for these cuties. You want high-falutin' sounding names for animals? Anastasia Francesca Olivia Felicity Delilah Henrietta Arabelle Bella Liora Shira Leah Fiona :D I love mastiffs. We are on our second one. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images16/DogueDeBordeauxRoxyReese2.jpg Edited June 7, 2012 by Liz CA

SonshineLearner
Well... We were told for training, "e" on the last of the name is best. Could be an old wives tale... Just a thought :) I like names like Phoenix and such for dogs ;) Ariella is cute :) Hmmmm :) Can't wait to see her! :)
mommyagain
I love Fiona and Amelia
Mandylubug
I like names that don't seem fitting for the pet... if I had a huge dog, I would name it tiny, or dot, or speck.. something that was just silly for the dog.... I do like the name darla for female dog, though.
Impish
The reason I don't want an 'ie' ending is b/c we have 2 humans and a dog already w/ 'ie' at the end of their names. Already there are issues when we're calling one, the other 2 ask for clarification  Another name I found that I kinda like is Tala. It means 'Wolf' in First Nations. Perry
Fiona or Stella. I googled dogue de bordeaux images. There are some hysterical pictures!
Liz CA
Fiona or Stella. I googled dogue de bordeaux images. There are some hysterical pictures! Don't let the pic on the right scare you. These guys are mostly heart and big hunks of love. Don't you just love that face? People will not come near you when you walk them. :D
Occasionally
If I were getting a boy, I'd name him 'Fezzik' after Andre the Giant's character in Princess Bride. Buttercup? :D

Teachin'Mine
Seraphina is too close to a ppl name we have in the family, so that won't work. I like the name Phoenix, but it would prob get shortened to 'Fee', which wouldn't work. Hmmm... Or to Fifi ... which would work even less!!! Beautiful dogs, but definitely not to be named Fifi!
Cinder
Buttercup? :D That was the first name that I thought of, too. Then I looked at the list and like Phoenix. Then I thought of that Chevy Chase movie Funny Farm and thought her name should be Red Dog. ETA: I just realized you can't go with Buttercup because she was Princess Buttercup and you already have a Princess. :)
oasis
Awww... After seeing pics of this breed, I would say Xena, cause she'll look like she can kick some major butt! :D
Perry
Lucille? Ginger?
Jenny in Florida
Okay, to me the females look like elderly, British matrons. My daughter suggests Lady Bracknell or, if you wanted to be less formal, Augusta.
mumto2
Just wanted to say I am envious. I have always wanted one. They are absolutely wonderful from everything I have ever heard. I think the name should sound French beyond that no idea.
swellmomma
I think Sawyer would make a good girl name
Impish
My mom used to breed them, so I know the breed really, really well...there's NOTHING that could put me off them! They're the only dogs that I've known that have a sense of humour, LOL Lucille was one I thought of, but it would totally get shortened to Lucy...which I'd be ok w/, if only to be able to call, "Luuuucy! I'm home!" in a really bad Ricky Ricardo imitation, but again, have the problem of too many 'ie' sounding names already. Plus, the joke would wear thin in a yr or 3. I think. I thought of Ethel too. And Emma (ever see Corner Gas?)

Liz CA
Oh! Oh! How about Fiona? (as in Shrek) I like it! Or "Adelle" honoring her French heritage...Leona, Marcy, Monique, Jaqueline...this could go on all day! :D
Cinder
Lula--as in Tallulah or Lulabelle. Luuuuu-la!
Caitilin
Oh! Oh! How about Fiona? (as in Shrek) My middle name is Fiona, and I love it, but I dunno if I could name a big doggie like her Fiona. Besides, Fiona means "fair!" ;) I like Tallulah, myself.

Impish
if Wolf doesn't agree to a name soon, life will not be pretty. :glare: He suggested, "Baby" :glare:
Liz CA
if Wolf doesn't agree to a name soon, life will not be pretty. :glare: He suggested, "Baby" :glare: Our previous mastiff came with a name we could live with but didn't "love" (she came from Mastiff Rescue) and one day soon after we got her, dh looked at her and crooned:"You are just a giant baby." It stuck. The pic in my avatar was "Giant Baby."
Impish
Still not agreed on a name. Her Daddy's name is Havoc, so Wolf suggested 'Mayhem' this am. *headdesk*

Impish
I should mention that I intend for her to go visiting at hopsital/nursing homes and suggest her being a 'reading buddy' at the local ps, so the name has to be easy to pronounce for kids, and nonthreatening. Hence why 'Mayhem' is out
Cinder
Non threatening and easy to say? Daisy
Impish
Yup. ETA: that's why Wolf's sense of ha ha isn't helping. We're not naming her 'Monster' or 'Killer' or 'Psycho'. *sigh*
oasis
Maybe you could name her Kitty. LOL!
magnificent_baby
A friend of mine named her dog Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. (That was a female character, right? Can't remember). I have always like that name for a dog.

But I too would be hesitant calling a dog "Mayhem" - you know "nomen est omen." Edited June 8, 2012 by Liz CA
vettechmomof2
All of my Dogue clients with females name them flower names. There are quite a few Daisys and Petunias. A Rose and a Hydrangea (called Gea). Daffoldil is known as Dilly:001_huh: The only make client is called Bullet....p.s. he is really lazy and slow:001_smile:
Impish
I liked 'Lila' (means lilac, my fave flower) but Wolf 'meh'd it.
astrid
Madeleine. 1. It's French. 2. She was a redhead. astrid (in an old house in Paris that was covered with vines......)

oasis
What if you go with a name that has the connotations of something beautiful and powerful, and not too scary, like Storm? I think Phoenix would be a great name, too.
