Has this happened to you?

Recommended Posts

My dd10 got a nook color for her birthday. Everything was great for a few days. She loved it.

She was just getting ready to go to bed and was going to read a little. She came running to me crying saying she doesn't know what happened. She was very, very upset. I looked and she showed me there was a free book sample on there called "S@x vacation with my stepdad".:confused::confused::confused:

I am pretty pissed to say the least. My dd is horribly upset. I called Barnes N Noble. They only said they have no idea how this could have happened and apologized. That's all.

I will be returning it to the store first thing tomorrow.

I don't know how it would have downloaded on its own. You have to agree to download something twice. It always asks if you're sure you want to download. Are you sure she wasn't just innocently searching and downloaded it, then realized it was something she shouldn't be looking at?

This was my thought as well. Children are curious.

I think it's possible it just appeared. I had some random samples show up on my Nook Color. They were innocent though. One was a housekeeping book [ETA: not that it matters, but I just looked and it was a cookbook!] and some classics. It still annoyed me, to be honest. :glare:

I'm sorry, OP. I'd demand some explanation, and I'd probably return it if they couldn't satisfactory handle it. Oh, and DON'T let them charge you a restocking fee!

Yes, I'm sure. I get receipts for everything she has downloaded. This one, I never got a receipt for.

I agree. Make it so that she cannot shop. Turn off the wifi and require a password. Problem solved.

I am pretty sure everybody has the same permanent samples. I have seen the color Nooks of my mom, my 2 sisters, my cousin and a few friends. Dracula, The Good Housekeeping Cookbook, etc. They do NOT show up randomly.

Wow, that is strange and upsetting! I can think of three possibilities.

First, I'm basing this one on my Kindle ... I don't get emails when I download samples because I haven't bought anything, it's just a preview chapter. Is it possible she accidentally downloaded it and you aren't really supposed to get emails for samples? OR is the email in your spam folder? If that word was in the title it might have been filtered out.

Second possibility ... each book has an item number, so to speak. When she clicks to download a sample of Mary Had a Little Lamb, if the wrong item number is associated with it she could get who knows what. Maybe something is miscategorized in their database.

Third, maybe someone has accessed your account and they sent it? That doesn't seem likely, but stranger things have happened.

Fourth, (also unlikely), hacking of the platform has commenced. :glare: I sure hope not, because it'll stink for all of us!

Yikes! I have never had anything like that happen and I have had my NOOK color for almost a year. I don't think that I get emails when I download samples though. I have seen some yucky books available in the shop and I wouldn't allow a child access to the shop.

:iagree: I've never gotten emails for samples. However I have been searching for books and had some icky stuff appear in the search results even while using completely innocent keywords.

I thought about it after I posted and you're right about the classics, but I know I didnt have the samples on my Color when I first bought it. Maybe they didn't do it when the Colors were first released? I bought mine pretty quickly. I had a cookbook and a another title-- Conquistadora, I think-- that were on my NC. I remember when they appeared and how annoyed I was then they wouldn't DISappear.

Lots about Nook that made me fall out of love. I sold them and switched to a Kindle. :tongue_smilie:

ETA: I just added a sample to my Nook app for iPad. No email.

No, I've never had a sample appear randomly on my Nook Color, other than the standard classics sample (mine was Little Women), a Good Housekeeping cleaning book, and some other book I can't remember. I have not received receipts for samples. I only received receipts for full titles that I've purchased or full titles that were offered as "free".

I would be inclined to chalk it up as an "oops", turn off the wi-fi, and require a password.

I can empathize because we had something equally bizzare with our cable box years ago. Dd was about 5, and was watching a pbs kids cartoon about an elf type guy called Noddy. It was an 'on demand' selection. I was loading the dishwasher in the kitchen. Dd told me when it was over and wanted to watch another.

I walked through the dining room and as I was looking at the television, I thought it was in a demo mode or something. I could see the highlight bar scrolling down the channel selections. It highlighted HBO, then the parental control box popped up and 4 asterisks appear as though our code was being entered and then the screen changed and I saw it said HBO after dark or something like that :001_huh:. I rounded into the living room as a show started. It was a porno! I lunged at dd and scooped her up to remove her from the room, there were moans and images oh my! I hollered for dh. He barrels down the stairs and goes 'what the ----." Then he is scrambling for the remote and finally just yanks the power cord. The remote was on top of the mantel :tongue_smilie: but it was so crazed I couldn't remember where it was and dh was just trying to get it off the tv screen asap.

I called the cable company, and the funny thing is that we did not even have HBO (a premium pay for channel). You cannot access it 'on demand' unless you have a subscription. I explained that it looked like I was watching some invisible person controlling the remote, but no one had it. The rep could not explain what had happened. She was appalled for us! She even called a tech manager at home, no answers. She actually asked me if I believed in ghosts or demons. Well, that was an interesting thought?! We gave them their box back the next day and never looked back!

Technology has a mind of its own (a perverted one apparently)! :tongue_smilie:

Our cable company can access our box remotely, just did it yesterday. For some reason our movie channels disappeared and dh called for support. She accessed and rebooted the box over the phone, from several states away.

I also have had random samples show up on my Nook Color such as Dracula, I find the random samples very annoying.

I would be mighty ticked if that happened to my child. So sorry your DD had to go through that!

I just ordered several samples (including the one the OP mentioned) and didn't get a receipt for any of them.

I also worked for B&N for awhile, the samples are all classics and such. *NOT* that kind of material. While I love an opportunity to smash B&N when I can (I really don't like them, especially after working for them), I can say it wasn't the fault of them. It was inadvertent if anything.

As I stated on page 2, I do get receipts for everything that we have downloaded so far: free apps, free samples, free books. Everything. Except for this book. It just showed up mysteriously. I think I set it up to get receipts for everything myself. I think I remember there being an option.

My dd also does not know the wi-fi password and I do the shopping for her.

So yeah, I'm 100% certain that my dd had nothing to do with this. We only had her nook for less than week now, and it's sad, but I'm going to return because I do not want to risk something like this happening again. I could tell dd was thoroughly disturbed by this and I feel awful.

Did you by any chance buy a nook that had been a refurbished one or a return? Sometimes things from previous owners pop up out of the blue.

:iagree:

When I bought my first Nook (that I ended up giving to my MIL), it was a return (but sold as new). When I started playing with the "shelves", some interesting books showed up - ones I had never bought. Not as "interesting" as yours, though! They weren't visible until I started playing around with the organization. There were also a couple of books on the My Documents library (not the B&N one-) that hadn't been wiped out. If this was the case for you, it would explain how the book just showed up without being connected to the WIFI or store....

When I bought my second Nook (the one I kept), I made sure it was new-new and had no problems.

This was my first thought. The tech guys who refurbished didn't do a good enough job to get the item fully removed.

I don't think you have to go so far as to return it if your dd really likes it, but I would definitely make sure it was completely reset to the factory settings before letting her use it again.

Even if you bought it brand new, it could have been returned to the store by a previous customer (who claimed they never used it,) and that's why you ended up with an inappropriate title even though you never ordered it.

I don't see any harm in letting her keep it if you make sure the WiFi is disconnected and there's no way for her to get to the online store with it.

It just seems such a shame to return a gift she likes.

We did purchase new. But if it had been used before and returned, would the book not have been there from the start?

The only other thing I can think of is that it happened when I plugged in the nook to my Mac to download the free classics.

I don't know. But for me, I want to avoid this from happening again. I told dd she could pick out something else instead and we will stick to traditional books.
