K&Rs Mom
I would let them paint it whatever they want. But maybe add that if they hate it, they have to buy the next batch of paint? :iagree: Maybe suggest a lighter colored line that won't be so hard to cover if they need to? KidsHappen
Yep, one of my girls wanted a fushia and orange room and then the next girl that moved into the room wanted a very light green. Both paint jobs came out really well. It is a great way to personalize the space, is usually relatively inexpensive and if they help they feel a great sense of accomplishment. Laura in MI
We ended up buying the paint and we're painting tomorrow! Thanks for the reminder about the chalkboard paint, we have some in our kitchen, laundry room and in 2 hallways and love it! We ended up getting some for the black stripe. Wish us luck! :tongue_smilie:
ZooRho
ds just painted over his zebra striped room with 2 shades of blue with a black zigzag going through 2 walls. and the primer covered the zebra room
caitlinsmom
Yup. I'd also add that if you decide to sell the house they have to paint it whether they are in love with it at the time or not. :)
katilac
Black paint isn't that hard to cover. My nephew painted HIS ENTIRE ROOM black when he was a teen. That's what Kilz is for.
Wabi Sabi
I don't know that I would give my kids free reign over choosing some absolutely crazy paint scheme that *I* really hated. If they want to do something a little different or funky that would be totally fine, but I imagine dh and I would still have some veto power if it was something we absolutely found to be hideous. nd293
So, should I let them paint their room this way? Is there somewhere online they could do a mock-up, or perhaps physically, e.g. paint a box the way they propose so they could have a look at it? Or simply look online for examples of rooms painted similarly so they can get a better idea of how it will look? But yes, I would let them do it. Ds4 chose a green for his room, sort of like the green in the boxes which go with the Ikea kids storage systems. I painted just one wall, but it looks awesome. Dd11 pushed for all coloured walls, and I reluctantly went with it. She has 3 sort of lilacy walls, and one in a dark purple, kind of grape coloured. It also looks fantastic. rocketgirl
kids have awesome ideas...let them do it & help them fix it, or make it look better if you need to. For my kids who are younger, when they get an idea, I try to help them make it happen because sometimes they just don't know how, on the other hand mine come up with an idea one day then 2 days later are off on another idea. But, paint is the cheapest way to decorate a wall...
sewingmama
So long as they weren't wanting all black I would say yes. If they don't like it they can repaint later.
Rhonda in TX
Yes. Paint is cheap and relatively easy to change later.
myfunnybunch
Yes. :) It sounds really cool. My dd chose turquoise, pink and purple for her room. She loved it. When it was time to repaint, she choose a lovely blue with one grey wall. It was easy to repaint, and I am glad I said yes to the brighter colors. :) Cat
Elisabeth in IL
Post pictures when you are finished painting it!! I'd love to see the finished product!! :001_smile:
katilac
oh, and my youngest dd has the purple-est room in the universe, with bright pink curtains, so obviously I let them pick their own room decor. I don't sleep or play or read in their rooms, so I don't veto based on what I dislike.
DarlaS
Yes, how fun! And then the pink side can have turquoise accessories, and the turquoise side can have pink accessories, and both sides can throw a few black things in to boot! Cool! :iagree: My kitchen is turquoise, any black accessories look awesome in it, and recently I found myself daydreaming about a hot pink mixer (I'll probably go with something more practical like pink towels. :tongue_smilie:). I'm kind of partial to that color combo--and I'm 41.
scrappyhappymama
I'd love to see pictures when it's done. My mom let me paint my room peach with lime green trim when I was a teenager. I loved it! We recently moved into our house and the boy's room was pepto bismol pink. We covered it with a primer and a nice light grey, and it was no problem covering the pink. PeacefulChaos
All this is really making me wish we had something that needed painting... :D
