athomemom
I have used Pantene for years. Seriously, years!! I keep hearing about Pantene making your hair thin or fall out....my hair seems a little thin on top. It may just be my paranoia kicking in. In any case, I bought a small bottle of Nexxus moisturizing shampoo and mousse to try today at WM. I'd love to hear what's worked well for ya'll as well as what products to AVOID!! :001_smile:
Mrs Mungo
I have used Aussie moist shampoo and 3 minute miracle conditioner since I was a teenager. I have tried other products, but haven't found anything that works as well. The styling products I use change a lot, but I've been using this curling cream along with this gel for a while now. Pretty in Pink
I like this Redken shampoo and conditioner when I can afford it. It lasts for a few months when I am careful about the amount that I use. Otherwise, I like the economy-sized bottles of Tresemme shampoo and conditioner (the one for curls). I like Tresemme mousse, Deva Curl Set it Free leave-in spray, and Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme. Any shine-enhancing hair spray is fine -- I think I've got a can of Aussie in there right now. Lately I've been using the Deva Curl spray and a dollop of the Bumble & Bumble cream, blowdrying with a diffuser, and finishing with a light mist of the shine hair spray. My curls have been really soft and bouncy.
samba
I like Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine shampoo and conditioner...also the Tresemme for curly hair. I haven't found styling products I think are great so I just use the cheap stuff--Suave mousse and hairspray. Everytime I try the more expensive products, I'm disappointed. They sit in the cabinet and I use them on the days I don't have to go anywhere. :glare:
NCMom
But you really need to know what type of curly hair you have to start experimenting, lol. Mine do not use shampoo, but instead use conditioner as shampoo. They also leave conditioner in every time they get their hair wet, even if it doesn't say leave in. And also they never use conditioners with any form of silicone in them so Pantene is out. Which conditioner actually does work is definitely dependent on the person's hair. One of mine uses a Jason conditioner and the other uses a Giovanni for nice hair days. They use one of the cheap "naturals" (Suave??) before meets/swim practice cause they do have to wash it out prior to swimming (or their caps pop off:). These work remarkable well and are cheap, which is good since they go through a bottle a week or more. :001_smile: I would read some curly girl websites to get some ideas and to determine your hair type. Mine girls are a 3C and a 4. hth, Georgia
LaxMom
I use Kiss My Face "Whenever" shampoo and conditioner and either crunch wet hair up with coconut oil or Dr. Bronner's lavender-coconut hair cream.

MSNative
I love Aveda Brilliant Be Curly gel. It gives hold and definition without crunchiness. I've tried tons of products and this is my favorite. I like most of Aveda's Be Curly line, but this is the best, imo. It's the only product I have used that is strong enough to hold up to southern humidity but doesn't end up looking wet or feeling crunchy. Swearing off shampoo is a BIG part of achieving your ultimate curl dreams. :iagree::iagree::iagree: After a lifetime of frizz, the one thing I wanted to do before we left NYC was get a haircut at Devachan salon. I finally did and have been following the strategies in the book ever since. I cannot believe how much better my hair looks. ( And I swim every other day, too.) I use Devacurl No-Poo, regular old Pantene conditioner, and then either Devacurl gel or Jane Carter Solutions Nourish & Shine. Anything with silicone is a guaranteed disaster for my hair. KungFuPanda
Devacurl is pricey but 100% worth it. It made DD's hair AMAZING. I get the large bottle at Ulta and water it down just a smidge. It lasts for MONTHS. I think you can even buy it at Amazon now.
Dirtroad
Stop using brushes. I use Pantene for Curly hair for years also. I used to fill up a brush. Read an article about curly hair. The recommended STOP brushing. Use your fingertips only... just gently pull through & let the natural curl rule! A gel helps to keep the shape. The article also recommended NO HAIR DRYER. Air dry only. That has been a good tip for me also! Third tip was to stop using terry cloth/bath towels to dry hair... the little loops act like brushes & make hair frizzy. They recommended paper towels. I have NOT done this one. I just towel dry but more gently. Final tip came from a salon owner. She said curly hair is usually DRY hair. She recommended a hair mask (~5 minutes on your hair & then rinse well) and some oil treatments (an asian style, not VO5 :)). I don't do this well.... my showers are barely 5 minutes... much less salon style hair treatments.
cshell
**Simply try a mixture of: 1 tsp. plain yogurt, 1 tsp. honey & 1/2 tsp. olive oil. It works wonders for the dry ends of your hair!;) So, focus on the ends & rinse off with cold water. I am amazed at how much healthier my hair looks! Also.....drink water!! It helps to hydrate your hair & skin.
SeekingSimplicity
I use tresemme naturals, sulfate free conditioner and then shampoo as needed (which is not very often). I was using suave but it made my scalp very irritated. A lot of products make my hair crunchy so I avoid most of what's out there actually. I like herbal essence totally twisted gel. Then the stylist at Devachan said that some of her clients use cloth diapers. She (young, kidless) seemed mildly put off by the thought of using diapers on one's hair but I was like, "Cloth diapers?! I have those! That's a great idea!" And they work perfectly. Very absorbent with no terry loops to cause frizz. BlsdMama
Curly Girl. It's a must. Thanks for the heads up on Deva Curl. My oldest has very curly hair. We found someone in town that carries it, I'll pick her up some. Edited July 23, 2011 by BlsdMama

Nestof3
I have used Aussie moist shampoo and 3 minute miracle conditioner since I was a teenager. I have tried other products, but haven't found anything that works as well. These are the ones I use too! I've been using the following products with no problems: Sebastian Potion 9 Beyond the Zone Noodle Head Curling Cream Got2b Glued Spiking Gel My hairdresser used Bumble and Bumble curly hair products (I bought two) which I love! Nestof3
I also don't think all curly hair is the same. I think you have to experiment with what works on your type. I tried the curly girl method and hated it. I use coconut oil on my ends sometimes and then wash it out. I also skip shampoo several days in a row. I've used baking soda as well for cleaning my hair. I like diffusing my hair. I would never use a brush on it, but a wide-tooth comb is great. I comb my hair out in the shower with the conditioner on. My hair dresser recommended squeezing out excess water with a towel before applying conditioner. Oh, and the right cut makes a difference. I just had my hair cut by someone new, and I like it so much better. It has lots of layers of different lengths, and it's much bouncier. I've also been able to skip a day of wetting my hair. elegantlion
I also don't think all curly hair is the same. I think you have to experiment with what works on your type. :iagree: I haven't used shampoo in a long time. I do conditioner. I use cheaper brands because of budget, but I find I like "sleek" conditioners and "extra moisturizing" conditioners. I also find the after shower products can vary by hair and where you live. When we lived in the south all I needed was some leave in conditioner. Now we're in the mid-west (drier, generally drier, not this week :ack2:) climate and I need something with more hold. I like Garnier leave in creme conditioner. I had to buy Suave gel last week and it's actually working okay. The best way I've found to apply gel is lean over with your hair hanging down, then brush the gel/product through your hair with your fingers. One of the keys is try not to get gel type products into the scalp as they can cause flaking. I don't even own a brush, haven't blow dried my hair in 15 years, and I use a comb about 2-3 x per week. I comb through the product after the shower to remove loose hairs.
lisamarie
So how do you take a shower with just conditioner? Does it get your hair clean? Do you shower daily? I would love for my curls to not get frizzy, but I'm not so good with curls--my hair used to be pretty straight until after I was pregnant with #3. Something happened and my hair went curly.:001_huh:

My hair will get oilly. I usually use Deva Curl Low-Poo. Or Garnier products when I plan to straighten my hair (my avatar is showing straight). I use any regular conditioner as a leave-in too. I don't buy a conditioner that is specifically labelled as a leave-in. Edited July 24, 2011 by jannylynn

The cool water will help close the hair shaft. I will about 1-2x/week rinse my hair with diluted apple cider vinegar, too much can dry your hair. I've found adding some product while it is still wet is the best assurance to not get frizzy. Experimentation may be the best solution. It took me several products to find what would work correctly for my hair.
mothergooseof4
I just recently started the conditioner only method. I still use gel when going curly, straighten sprays and volumizers when going straight, and have no problems getting my hair clean. I start by rinsing it for a long time with just warm water, then I add a lot of conditioner and scrub my scalp and hair just as if using shamoo. I then rinse a long time again. I add more conditioner, scrub again, and then let it sit a while before rinsing it out again. My hair is not oily and I have not had a problem getting products out of my hair. I am hoping that over time, my hair will be stronger since it has started to break a lot. By not stripping the oils out a few times a week, it should get stronger right? I read about all of this online and some said to use conditioners that do not have silcone, dimethicone, etc. in them...basically anything that ends in "cone" because they will build up on your hair. I haven't noticed any difference with either kind myself though.
