NanceXToo Posted March 27, 2011 Share Posted March 27, 2011 Here are our 6th Grade plans: English/Social Studies (4X a week): Oak Meadow 6 "Ancient Civilizations and English" Ancient world civilizations provide the foundation for an integrated experience that weaves together the history, geography, literature, government, and art of ancient cultures. We encourage critical and independent thinking by challenging students to understand opposing viewpoints and to write from the perspective of different cultures and time periods. Grammar lessons and activities are woven into writing assignments and students expand their vocabulary and composition skills. Art explorations include sculpture, drawing, calligraphy, mosaics, marbling, costume making, and mask making. Required literature includes: An Indian Epic: Ramayana; The Rainbow People; D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths; Growing Up In Aztec Times; Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest; Tales of King Arthur. Science (3X a week): Oak Meadow 6 "Basic Life Science" Math (5X a week): Teaching Textbooks 6 4X a week Life of Fred Fractions 1X a week Health & Physiology (1X a week): We will be using parts of the FREE health curriculum at kidshealth.org, focusing on the "Personal Health" and "Human Body" series. Art (1X a week): Meet The Masters Physical Education: She will continue with her weekly Judo classes, among other things that come up here and there. Music: She will start acoustic guitar lessons. Misc: Continue with Girl Scouts, library book club, and remaining active in our homeschool group. P.S. We MIGHT also move on from "Sentence Composing For Elementary School" (which we're using now) to "Story Grammar For Elementary School" but I haven't decided for sure yet whether I want to continue with the series into next year. We also MIGHT add on some sort of Spanish program, because my daughter has expressed an interest in learning Spanish. Perhaps Getting Started With Spanish to start out with? Over the summer in between 5th and 6th grade we will continue with SOTW1 from where we left off last summer, and will also use the Typing Instructor For Kids program. The only thing I might have done differently in retrospect would be the Sonlight writing. We replaced it with NaNoWriMo in November and that was our favorite month. Math Olympiad through homeschool group. Math Counts if I can figure it all out since she'd be competing as an individual (my olders were on a school team). Science CPO Life Science plus botany ala me (I interrupted grad studies in horticulture/landscape design to homeschool, sigh.) Science Olympiad, moving up to Division B. History The Human Odyssey vol 2: Our Modern World 1400-1914 with the Oxford Press series The Medieval and Early Modern World and other library books. Lots of historical fiction. Looking into National History Day as it begins with 6th grade---she really wants to give this a try! English/Language Arts All that is certain right now is that she'll use Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop B and maybe C. Literature will be tied in with history. Need to figure everything else out, but I'm giving myself permission to wait until June at the Northeast Convention. Exercises in English 6 (Loyola Press but secular) French We'll continue with So You Really Want to Learn French 1 (Galore Park) and perhaps start 2. I have her older sister's high school French 1 and French 2 textbooks and workbooks as well. And then Art I'm thinking about Artistic Pursuits, which I will check out at the convention. Music Continuing with flute but I need to find an ensemble we can afford that does not meet on a Saturday. Gym Continuing with classical ballet. Next year will be four days/week. She also wants to try ice-skating which we'll start in the summer. Going to try an intro to field hockey camp through Parks & Rec this summer as well. NaNoWriMo again?? She isn't sure. What level of LfC will you be moving from to go to LA? My boys are finishing LfC B this year & I'm trying to figure out whether to go to LfC C or LA (or LNM) next year. I'd like to do whichever will make the smoothest transition to Wheelock's in 7th. VP online offers both LfC C & LA so we'll probably end up with one of those. VP suggested that we continue w/ LfC C rather than move to LA bec. LA assumes no prior Latin experience and "the first half will all be review." (I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy of LfC C or LA yet to see for myself, so I can't vouch for that advice.)
