What are your 8th grade plans?

Recommended Posts

Definate's so far:

-MFW ECC (Exploring Countries and Cultures, so World Geography)

-Videotext Algebra Modules D, E, F

-Second Form Latin

-Analytical Grammar (cuz we have it)

-Progeny Press Guides for 2 books

-Vocab: Roots from Classical, something or other....the title escapes me at the moment.

Undecided:

-Composition: Perhaps Writeshop2 as we are doing WS 1 now. Will decide as we get near to the end of WS1

-Science: Perhaps Apologia, or FLVS.net online Science, or something else?!??

-Spanish: We'll be moving and our new library system offers Tell Me More so I might go with that. Or was thinking the K12.com Spanish.

hmm, am I missing something....seems like....but that's what is in my mind so far. Not much is changing, as our core subjects we will just continue on with the next thing for next year.

We'll see what our new area offers as well as I think they have quite a bit to offer HSers, and I have even found a University model private school that welcomes HS'es so he may take a class or two there, but we might wait on 9th grade for that.

8th grade? Next year? Yes we'll be there! Yikes!

Off the top of my head, our tentative plan is

Chalk Dust algebra

Rod and Staff grammar 8

Lightning Lit 8

finish Second Form Latin, and start Third Form

She'll likely take Spanish, science, and another elective at a co-op.

I have no idea about history, logic, or writing. We'll be in the 4th year of our second history cycle, "modern." For history, I'm considering just letting her read K12 Human Odyssey, do a timeline and maps, and the occasional paper ala WTM. Outlining these texts (Kingfisher, Nat Geo Almanac) has become the bane of her existence and I'm done fighting with her on it. I need to re-read WTM about 8th grade history and re-listen to SWB's audio lectures.

Good thing I have a little time to decide! Ack!

I recently asked for suggestions for my 8th grade plan. It might need a little tweaking, but I think it's mostly a go:

Math: Lial's Intro to Alg. I

Science: CPO Physical Science

Lang. Arts: The Potter's School English I and Megawords

History: MFW Rome to Reformation

Lit: Lit Lessons from the Lord of the Rings

For. Lang.: Rosetta Stone Spanish yr. 3

I am lacking logic and vocabulary, but the schedule looks pretty full.

I would LOVE to hear from any of you who are considering CPO physical science. I have tentative plans to use Reader's Digest How Science Works to take the place of the expensive CPO experiments. (Reader's Digest How Things Work is also a possibility.) I realize that's a subject for another thread.:D

I will also have a 3rd and 6th grader who might use Elemental Science for physics together (beefing up for the 6th grader.) We will try to follow CPO as closely as possible. I like it when we can all study the same subject.

Just beginning to pull things together, but... (Putting history/lit at the bottom, since its its own list, practically...)

Algebra II

Latin III (outside course)

Physical Science

Traditional Logic 1 and 2

Language arts:

One Year Adventure Novel (because I think ds will enjoy this very much, and 8th grade seems like a good place for us to slot it in)

Windows to the World -- This is a one-semester course that, together with How to Read a Boo, I plan to stretch over the whole year. Ds will be reading quite a lot from the list below, but I want to use this to work on literary analysis and paper-writing skills

Essay Voyage as an additional resource for paper writing, along with Windows

For grammar, the third Stewart English book, also rather writing-heavy, but ds has completed the first two this year, so I think it will be fine.

Greek 2 - finishing Athenaze 1 and working through the first half of book 2.

Christian Studies 3 (Glad we worked through these for logic-stage -- I'm looking forward to using The Bible and Its Influence in high school.)

Art history - finishing Annotated Mona Lisa to match history studies, lots of additional materials

Geography - working through the map-drawing lessons in Mapping the World with Art one more time -- just a few minutes a week, but I think this is a worthwhile addition to our other work

Philosophy - Sophie's World - Just reading 1 chapter a week and discussing, perhaps taking notes

For history and lit, our period will be 1850-present. We'll plan to read from assigned history reading 3x per week, and continue with outlining, summarizing, adding to timelines... I'm going to list the history books I'll use first, then the literature I'm considering below that. My reading list for next year is very much a work in progress at this point...

Hakim's History of US books 6-10 (all of these)

DK Definitive Visual Guide to History

Spielvogel's Western Civilization (selections only)

Marrin's Unconditional Surrender and Virginia's General

MCT's Lincoln's Ten Sentences and Free at Last

(in no particular order yet)

Huck Finn

The Man Without a Country

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Walden

Leaves of Grass

Little Women

Great Expectations

Sherlock Holmes (stories)

The Jungle Book

The Time Machine

The Call of the Wild

The Innocence of Father Brown

The Scarlet Pimpernel

Murder on the Orient Express

Strong Poison

Their Eyes Were Watching God (?)

Gone With the Wind

The Yearling

The Importance of Being Earnest

Pygmalion

A Man for All Seasons

Murder in the Cathedral (?)

Animal Farm

To Kill a Mockingbird

Red Badge of Courage

The Pearl (Steinbeck)

Short stories: O Henry, Capote? Welty? Tolstoy... (check Ambleside year 11)

Number the Stars

Sing Down the Moon

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

The Hiding Place

Across Five Aprils

Rifles for Watie

Christy

Dragon’s Gate

Farewell to Manzanar

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

All Quiet on the Western Front?

I'll probably cut that down to roughly a book per week (recognizing that these vary widely in difficulty and length, so I'll end up giving more time for some and far less to others).

My 8th grade plans are pretty fluid at this point. My youngest is going to try a charter school that several of her hs friends switched to this year.

I'm trying to make sure that I have a plan in place in case she ends up back at home.

I'm going to be teaching several high school classes (chemistry and precalculus because my middle dd will need them and geometry because I've had several people request it) and I'm probably going to set up a physical science class so I have something at middle school level I can drop my dd into if she comes back home.

I'd like to set up to teach more classes, but I'm afraid to set up anything more than that because I won't have the bandwidth to deal with more if my dd returns to hs again. As it is, I'll have to schedule the classes I'm going to teach around dropoff and pickup times for the charter school and the two cc classes my middle dd will be taking. The oldest won't figure into things at all because she's graduating in May and will be gone to college.

Dds 8th grade looks different than her brothers did :) It's nice to start without gaps for her and not have to cram so much in!

TOG4 Dialectic history, geography, literature (maybe Rhetoric Amer. Gov't)

Write Shop 2 (should be almost finished); then Writing Aids levels 7-10 as I choose

Science is undecided. Maybe some Anatomy (Apologia + living books), Geology/Earth Sci (unit study of living books), Astronomy (Apologia + living books)

Algebra 2 Chalkdust

The Latin Road to English Grammar (grammar + Latin)

Art of Argument

Piano (Alfred's)

Church Choir

Basketball in winter, walking the rest of the year

Babysitting

This one is my "easy button" She gets it done, I hardly ever need to remind her. She's already bursted through puberty, too, so I'm not expecting any trouble...except make-up outside of the house. I'm making her wait and she's wanting to be too grown up! It's tough to be "bumpy" and 12, iykwim!
