Immodest clothes s/o -- what about swimsuits????! UGH!

Recommended Posts

I was skimming through the thread about the woman and her teenaged daughter and how difficult it is to find modest clothing. Someone else posted about how boy's shorts are to their knees and girl's have no inseam.

I just wanted to chime in and announce that today I just bought men's swimming trunks for ME to wear to the stream this year. We go to a stream a few days a week each summer (ds's 4 and 6 and me) and splash around in it. I just wanted something to wear that when I get my shorts wet, they'll dry quickly. Regular shorts either get see-through or don't dry quickly. A swimsuit just wouldn't be appropriate for this public stream we play in. (I'd be the only one there in a swimsuit and would feel uncomfortable.)

So, men's swimtrunks. They cover everything, so I'm not walking around in my underwear (which is all women's swimsuits are--glorified underwear) PLUS they have BIG pockets that I can put stuff in. They're a plain brown, so will mostly look like long shorts on me. They were size 28-30, whatever that means.... They were baggy, so I guess that's how they fit my hips.

I'm just sooooooo tired of how women's swimwear is tight and has to fit just right, or you have to tug at it, while men's is comfy and baggy and has big pockets and covers all the parts that need to be covered. I mean, I get really mad about women's swimwear. I'm very intimidated to be walking around in a swimsuit that is in some cases, less coverage than my underwear. Very intimidated. I suck it up and wear a swimsuit at the pool, but I feel uncomfortable and self-concious the whole time.

Who here wishes that they made something like men's swimtrunks for women to wear? DO they make them, and I've just never seen them? Would you buy them and wear them if they made them?

They do. My dd wears swim shorts & a swim shirt. I only asked for a modest tankini, but dd likes her shorts & shirt from Target.

Yes, we found very modest swimwear at both Target and Walmart this year. They had tank tops and skirted bottoms. I would have settled for a tankini as well but was not heartbroken when the girls chose these instead.

Hmm, I actually am more pleased with the swimsuit choices the last couple of years. Tankinis with skirted bottoms are cute and meet our modesty standards. I just bought a nice one at Ross a few weeks ago.

Me, too. I just bought a really cute swim dress.

My DD wears a T-shirt style top/short type swimsuit combo from Target. They have these in the girls' department, but nothing in adult sizes, which is frustrating. If I had the money, I'd probably get myself a suit from Splashgear. As it is, I've been eyeing the swim trunks at Wal-mart, I'd rather wear those than the still-uncomfortably-short skirt that's part of my tankini. I wish I could find a rash guard type shirt for myself, too, but they're so expensive the few places I've found them, I come back to drooling over Splashgear!

Here is a list of places that sell modest swimsuits. These run the gamut from "mainstream modest" to "religiously modest" (aka cc, tznius, and practicing muslims).

Those hydochic ones are so cute! That's the best modest swimwear I've seen yet! (let's be honest, some sites are pretty frumpy) I know what I'm buying now! Thanks!

Oh, and I've gotten my girls suits from www.CWDkids.com They have some cute wetsuit style suits that the gilrs really like. And they're on sale right now.

I loved to swim, and always have. My mom would have certainly put me in one of those modest swim suits that look like short sets. She made me wear clothing on top of my swim suit when she was around, and I am not talking about only out of the water, but in the water too. It was very uncomfortable. I am not talking about only when I was a teen, but younger too. My brothers didn't have to wear shirts, I so thought this was unfair. When I went swimming with others they did not enforce my mom's rule. So I did get to swim in comfort sometimes. In Europe they swim topless. I saw this as a kid, and it did not bother me in the least. That was when I lived with my dad though. The strictness did not end with the swimsuit, I could not wear any clothing that even had a round neck. I felt choked being forced to wear turtlenecks because she was afraid someone would look at my chest when I had not yet even had one. Just letting everyone know to please not go overboard to the point your kids are uncomfortable and resent what you pick out for them. I am not saying join a nudist colony or anything of the sort. However, we may need to lighten up a bit. A swimsuit is made for swimming. I am not aware of kids swimsuits being thongs or strings, most do provide adequate coverage, without parents having to pile on extra clothes while swimming. They do make swim suit cover ups for when out of the water. So I don't really see what the big deal is.

There are many faiths that practice a certain amount of modesty that may seem "odd" to most. But also remember that what you may be comfortable in, may make someone else uncomfortable. Each family sets their own standards. Just as you may not want some questioning if you are exposing your child too much, they may not appreciate you telling them that they shouldn't "make their child feel odd". I believe ATTITUDE is the most important. When one puts a restriction/standard on their child with a negative attitude instead of a positive one, that alone is what can make a child feel "odd". Where if one approaches their faith and standards with a positive outlook and understanding, it may be otherwise. ;)

BTW, I posted a very diverse list (within the "modest" request) due to the diversity of the board. One person may see "frumpy" where another sees "feminine". One person may see "overboard & ridiculous" where another sees "a way I can hold to my faith and still be able to participate".

Yeah, Academy had boardshorts for women. But had no appropriate (for our family) tops.

We bought sports clothing instead. It allows for us to be better covered as well as supported.

ETA: My daughter has a MUCH more strict conscience than I do in regards to modesty. I also see NO reason NOT to be modest in and out of the pool. At the pool today (first day it was open), the great majority of people were appropriately dressed. There were very few of the smaller bikinis and such. Seems the more modest styles are appreciated.

They certainly are more popular these days and easier to find. My girls get compliments on their wetsuits all the time. A lot of people like them just for the coverage from the sun.

Honestly for DD my main goal is as much sun protection as it is modesty. She doesn't swim as often as she goes to a splash playground, and either way if it's in the sun, the better coverage means less slathering of sunscreen, which she detests. Also, the rashguard-and-shorts suit just means the 'in the water' modesty standard is the same as the general modesty standard I have for her in public in general.

I bought my 10yod a swimsuit here in the bright butterflies print:

http://www.tamanusun.com/

I bought this one for myself, and I wear a long, white, mesh coverup w/it - scroll down to the Tuxedo skirtini:

It can be hard to find, but these are good places for us. Land's End is a good option also. HTH!

Your California reporter can confirm the "style" here is often relatively modest board shorts combined with relatively immodest (non-matching) tops made of a knitted/or knotted material (I don't know what you call it, it's something like macramé). Is it hemp twine?

And I better not go looking too closely :D

"Tomboy Two-Piece" when I would wear a sports bra/tankini top and men's swim shorts. :D

Now I can buy cuter stuff through Land's End, etc. (Short-style bottoms or skirted ones, tankini tops). So, my experience has been that there are actually more modest alternatives available than used to be. (But my old solution was more practical when we went to the beach, canoeing, etc. As you said...no pockets on women's bathing suits.)

Older dd just got two cute tankini tops from Target, and a skirted bottom that matches both. (Granted, it's harder to find stuff like this in brick and mortar stores). She had a pair of board shorts last year that she wore over a regular bathing suit.

Rash guard t-shirts are available too, for sun protection, although they could be used for modesty reasons, I guess. (Again...Land's End.)

Something else that bothers me is how hard it is to find one piece suits for little girls. I am sorry, I don't want my 4 year old in a two piece (never did before either), and yet I find it really hard to find tasteful one piece suits. I had to order hers from Lands End to get what I wanted.

Egads! Talk about frumpy. If I had to wear such a thing, I think I would just never go swimming.

Not everything in that list is "frumpy". Look under the hydrochic site ;) Like I stated before...it's a diverse list for a diverse group, like we have here at WTM. What one would be embarrassed by another may appreciate knowing it's out there ;)
