  1. Actually for the kid who is just not college bound trade or vocational school is an excellent option. I saw a news report a couple years ago that said the average age for vocational trades right now is 55. In the next few years there could actually be a shortage of skilled workers in these fields. The technology may change, but we are always going to need electricians and plumbers. As long as it's legal and they are capable of supporting themselves and any children they decide to have my greatest desire is for them to be happy.
  2. Not yet, but if all goes well I will be next fall. We need to sell our house so we can move first. I left college while pregnant with the oldest and it was always my plan to return when the kidlets were all in school full time but then we started homeschooling....
  3. If it helps my cursive still looks like a third grader(the year we learned) wrote it. More often then not it is legible, but kind of embarrassing to me when most women my age have such pretty cursive.
  4. I like the name tag idea, and I do think it is a big deal. It's your sons identity, after all. I would mention it to her one more time and then I would send him to school with a name tag everyday until she gets it right.
  5. Is it? I had never the term used as a racial slur or otherwise. My grandfather was a storyteller and the Brer Rabbit stories were some of my favorite. Until this thread it never occurred to me as a child or adult that there might be anything racial in them other then they were said to be African American in origin. I wonder if this is one of those regional things or am I just very naive. I've never lived in the south and my experience here is that where racism exists here it tends to be much more covert (not really something that's openly expressed, but does exist).
  6. I've never even heard of it in that sense. The only tar baby Ive ever heard of is in the stories about Brer Rabbit my grandpa told use to tell us (since then I've seen the stories in books and cartoons). I can see where the exspession would fit a sticky situation. I guess it could be used as a slur, but context would be the key factor, I think.
  7. It sounds similar the outbreak of eczema my DD had several years ago. These round dry areas just showed up on her arms and legs. The Dr. Said it was eczema, prescribed a steroid ointment, and they cleared up in few days. It was strange though because she had never had a problem with eczema before or since.
  8. Amazon sells some slippers that can be stuck in the microwave to warm them up. Just search for cozy toes.
  9. While I agree that we all try lying as children I don't agree that we just grow out of it. I think lying can become a habit if it is allowed to continue and needs to be taken seriously from the get go.
  10. Well, I think many of them are just ignorant and truly don't understand what homeschooling is or how it works. They were raised in the same system many of us were and just haven't managed to find their way out of the box yet. Then because PS often doesn't have the same academic success as many homeschool families so this is their fallback position and the ignorant swallow it because after all it's what the "experts" tell them. Others feel threatened by your out of the box decision and want to undermine your confidence hoping youll give up and fall into line. Those who appear to just be ignorant may listen and learn something so answer their questions. The ones who are just hostile got sarcasm and eye rolls from me. I'm not officially a homeschooler any more for many personal reasons, but my it's still where my heart is.
  11. Our older mutt we chose after hearing an ad on Tradio (radio call in show). He was a dollar with a dollar rebate. Lol we chose him over his brother because he was the more outgoing and friendly of the two. He was almost 8 weekold and he is our gentle giant. Our younger mutt we adopted from the pound at 5 months. He was surrendered at 12 weeks, but when the rest of his litter had been adopted one of the animal control officers fostered him until just before we adopted him because young pups don't do well alone in shelters and need to be socialized. He was housebroken and knew some basic commands when we got him.
  12. :glare: Ugh!! Wonder if they knew that there is an easy way fix that. People! Well, my dog is a mutt, but he's the best dog I've ever had. Best we can tell is he's lab, g. Retriever and Rhodesion ridgeback. He trained easily and was housebroken by ten weeks old. I think it helped that we had an older dog too, so he went out when she did and learned by example with lots of praise. He is so mellow and gentle I never had to worry about him with the kids. When the kids were little and did something he didn't like or was tired of he just got up and walked away. He won't bite down on anything that isn't food. His nickname is Gentle Giant (85-90 lbs). Eta: also we can take him places without a leash (outside city limits of course) and he won't leave our side.
  13. I've never been asked that and I'm not sure that it would offend, but I'd probably tell them it was none of their business. My stepmom used to get asked that question all the time, but to be fair my sb and ss look nothing alike. Sb is dark skinned, dark brown hair, tall, thin, and has brown eyes. ss is pale, blond, blue eyed, short, and heavy set. Icant think of one physical trait they have in common, but they have the same father.
  14. Nope, no intruder drills. We had fire drills, earthquake drills, and bus drills. I have 2 in PS now and they no longer do earthquake drills, but still no intruder drills. Eta: I know that teachers and other staff are trained for those types of emergencies, but no drills with the kids. The first year we home schooled a nut with a knife ran onto an elementary school playground in Anchorage and managed to stab 4 children before being tackled by a playground aide.
  15. Animal planet has one now about animal Hoarders. It may be third she is referring to.
  16. Are you? Is every closet in the house full of your clothes? Did you turn a spare bedroom into a large walk-in closet? I have a cousin who fits this description. She still has the clothes she wore in high school! She won't ever wear them again, but she will not get rid of them. To be fair though clothes are the only thing she hoards and her house is always spotless.
  17. Not to mention the safety of firefighter and other emergency workers who may need to enter the property to save your life or how it effects your neighbors property values. We had a hoarder down the street who fought with city for years. His house and property were a junk pile until recently (he passed away last year and the family has cleaned up the yard). Looking at the outside of the house and condition it is in I would not enter the house and wouldnt be surprised if it was condemned. The tried to have garage sale all summer, but it looked like their garage exploded all over the driveway and yard and recently it appears as if they just shoved everything back in the garage. Unfortunately this is the first house you see when you turn onto our road.
  18. A lot of leeway is given here to older students who miss days due to moose hunting during hunting season. Too many families depend on it to eat through the winter.
  19. Our school year was/is determined by the fishing season. Many people depend on their older kids to help with commercial and subsistence fishing. They tried to start after labor day one year, but it made the school year last into June. They received a lot of complaints from parents who commercial and subsistence fish and have never tried it again.
  20. Other then musical instruments our district has the same sort of waivers and many charities group together to provide backpacks full of school supplies for those in need. They have moved away from pooling supplies though and the kids use their own even in lower grades.
  21. :iagree: Life is too short to put up with angry destructive people.
  22. Wow! Ive never cared for the practice of saying the pledge for a number of reasons, but this is so beyond creepy.
