  1. We have visa/ debit cards, but only use the credit side if debit isn't an option and only when we know the money is in the account to pay it.
  2. Have you tried boxers? My son went through a stage where he would not wear underwear. He finally told me that me that they were tight and uncomfortable so we got him some boxers and he's happily worn them ever since. Now, changing them daily? Well, that's another story. Boys!
  3. In Alaska there are no requirements for independent home schoolerrs. There are also a few homeschool programs that have rather minimal requirement but provide computers and an allotment for materials and lessons ( they can't buy faith based materials, but they do not forbid the use of them). We used one and were very happy with our exp. We had the freedom to do things our way and a very homeschool friendly staff. Where possible they hire people who have exp. With homeschooling. I know several of the contact teachers are former homeschooling moms who went on to get teaching certs. Just so they could work for the program. These programs can vary a lot and some require more/ provide less then others.
  4. In my world Christmas music, shows and decorations are banned until the fourth Friday in November and disappear the first of January. Now, if I could could just get the stores to all abide by my decree.:tongue_smilie:
  5. I think at 13 she is just thinking it would be cool to spend every day with her friends. Yes, Tweens and young teens can be very insensitive sometimes.:grouphug:
  6. Take and bake pizza already purchased and waiting in the fridge.
  7. :iagree: if the gift is specifically for DD then I would go with the one she'd like best. If it is for all the kids then yeah, neutral. I guess when buying a gift for one child it never occurred to me to try to make it suitable for all.
  8. I guess it just really depends on the child. I just read them a month or so ago and DD(13) read them right after I finished. She enjoyed them and it led to some interesting conversations. My DS(11) hasn't shown much interest in reading them yet but I doubt he'd have a problem with them either.
  9. We had a dog that had puppies and the runt never made a sound. When we ran into her new owners a few months later they said she had only let a couple high pitched yips since they had taken her home. Cute little pup though. We almost kept her, but we already had two dogs and at the time that was plenty.
  10. See, our walmart has their deli right inside the front door and there is no cash register there. That leads me to believe they are encouraging people to stop and grab some popcorn chicken (or whatever) to munch while shopping. I've also walked past many store managers and various other employees while munching and have never once had anyone say anything. Yes, I have seen emptied pop bottles and what not sitting on shelves and I let my kids how disgustingly wrong it is.
  11. :lol:Awesome! I have to read the rest. Thanks for adding to my already long Amazon wish list.:tongue_smilie:
  12. Our dogs have their own bowls, but I do wash them in the dishwasher now and then. The dishwasher has a high heat wash setting and a heated drying cycle so I figure it's probably safe and sanitized.
  13. We try to make it to the toilet, but if someone has a stomach bug or something that causes repeated vomiting episodes they get one of the ice cream buckets washed and saved just for this purpose.
  14. I was always under impression that stores had hot deli items with the idea that they will be eaten it in the store. We have done so many times, but i am careful to make sure the empty wrapper with the bar card goes into the cart and on the conveyer belt with the regular groceries. We do not open and eat items from regular grocery store shelves, though.
  15. Have you thought about including a couple books by local (in state) authors, maybe even a native. My thought is that they may be inspired to pick up a book if they see something written by some one like themselves, you know a shared history. One I know many people have enjoyed is Shadows on the Koyakuk: An Alaska Natives Life Along the River http://www.amazon.com/Shadows-Koyukuk-Alaskan-Natives-Along/dp/088240427X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319915969&sr=8-2
  16. :iagree: yep, why did the police even need to be called. I think the security officer overreacted. They should have been escorted back to a register and allowed to pay for the sandwiches.
  17. I'm in Alaska and it has always been goose. It is very odd that grey duck is limited to such a small region. The mush pot version is what we always played. I didn't realize there were variations, interesting.
  18. I'm very much connected to my state. We may in a few years move south, but I will always consider myself an Alaskan and there are many things I will miss when and if we do make that move.
  19. I just looked Alaska FS website and under items not allowed it does go on to say "items meant to be eaten in the store", I'm guessing that would cover most deli purchases. food items that CAN BE purchased with food stamp BENEFITs All food or food products meant to be eaten by people. Items considered "health foods" like wheat germ, brewers yeast, and seeds packaged to be eaten by people. Baby formula, diabetic and diet foods. Items used in preparing or preserving foods such as spices and herbs, pectin, and shortening. Snack foods like candy, potato chips, chewing gum, and soft drinks. Meals prepared for and delivered or served to elderly or disabled food stamp recipients if the public or private organization is authorized to accept food stamps. Distilled water and ice, if labeled "For Human Consumption". items that CANNOT BE purchased with food stamp BENEFITs Alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Nonfood items such as soap, toiletries, cleaning products, paper products, cooking utensils. Items not meant to be eaten by people such as laundry starch, pet foods, seeds packaged as birdseed, and decorative dye; items for food preservations such as pressure cookers, canning jars and lids, paraffin freezer containers and wrapping paper. Therapeutic products such as vitamins and minerals in any form. All health aids such as aspirin, cough drops or syrups, and other cold remedies, antacids, and all patent medicines. Items used for gardening such as fertilizer and peat moss. Prepared hot foods and hot food products sold in grocery stores, that are hot at the time of sale and ready to be eaten immediately. Any prepared food (hot or cold) sold and meant to be eaten at the store.
  20. Well, if it's moose I probably already know and would take a very small portion so as not to offend. Moose has it's own distinctive aroma when it's cooking that tends to make me feel a bit nauseated. Other then that unless it is something really unusual I don't really need to know. If I notice a different taste I might ask, but I don't think you need to make a big announcement of it.
  21. I guess I'm usually parked is such a way while unloading that I don't have this problem, but what is it with people who can't wait until you've finished your transaction and put your card or change away before they start crowding the counter?
