  1. " One explanation is the “revenue theory of costs,†first put forward by economist Howard Bowen in 1980. The theory holds that universities are unique in that they cannot easily measure unit costs, and so must benchmark their expenses to the available revenues. A university can theoretically spend unlimited amounts of money in the name of “education,†and so each dollar it gains access to it will find a way to use. This explains why federal student aid drives tuition increases: Uncle Sam makes funds available, and colleges spend them. "

  3. If I was ever appointed supreme education czar I would be cutting college admin positions and a lot of the Title crap that helps drive this. :cursing:  The whole system needs a re-boot. KISS.
  4. Wolfram gives x ~ 0.80121 real root x ~ -1.4006 +- 1.3352i complex roots you can display it in exact form which is a nasty looking solution - good luck - but it can be done
  5. How about slow start AP Calc BC along with some stats or discrete math? If you really want solid Calc 1 and Calc 2 equivalents (higher echelon colleges) it may be worth starting sooner and go beyond AP Calc BC by the end of next year. (using MIT or other options).
  6. " Required textbook (Sold separately): The required digital textbook for this course is: Larson, Ron & Laurie Boswell. (2016). Big Ideas Math, Geometry. Erie, PA: Big Ideas Learning, LLC. ISBN 978-1-68033-245-2 " That is a traditional textbook which is available in both digital or hard-copy format. Big Ideas Math company was started by Larson and I believe their text books try be Common Core compliant. I get a little nervous when a HS level course has no textbook just the online notes. Which usually cover material in less depth and detail. For example some of the BYU math courses use a textbook some do not.

  8. What states would you consider? Most folks these days don't do nation wide searches - especially in a transfer situation. The in-state public universities probably have programs available to help with the process. As others have mentioned make sure the program is ABET. IMO a BS Mechanical Eng degree with Aerospace specialization would be preferable for job placement.
  9. http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/2-year-colleges Coasts are overly represented because they don't scale salary to cost-of-living index.
  10. Is there a "front of the room" where he would be closer to the teacher? I know in many elementary schools these days the concept of the front of the class is missing due to table/desk layout.
  11. Not all of Easy Peasy is overtly Christian. I peeked at their HS Math it seemed fine. Maybe you can help your friend pick and choose some courses from all the suggestions. It can be done pretty cheap but the checking/correcting alone is a lot of work.
  12. It's "Time" not "The Atlantic" so as expected. It was more of an opinion piece.
  13. The actual state charter schools are usually through non-profits even if they are ultimately controlled by a large for profit such as K12. Charter schools are off-topic for this specific forum! So I apologize in advance. Please move to Gen Ed if you need a thread.

  16. The first chapter or two of most math text books are review so just blast through them.
  17. Why parity? In the end, if an individual is not interested in a particular subject matter then they won't be happy in the long run. By the way, I work with some absolutely fabulous women engineers and the guys have no problem consulting them for help with the hard stuff. Nerds like to be with other nerds .. it's not really a gender thing. from comments: Luxi Turna "As a former IT manager, I can promise you that I don't want to hire anyone who had to be talked in to computer science. If I hire a woman, it's because she's a "geek." If I hire a man, it's because he's a "geek." "
  18. That would be very statistically biased since the strong math types are overly represented in the test population!
  19. Is this College Board approved? http://www.thinkwell.com/instructor/product/calculusab These are http://cty.jhu.edu/ctyonline/courses/advanced_placement/ap_calculus_bc.html http://cty.jhu.edu/ctyonline/courses/advanced_placement/ap_calculus_ab.html and I believe they use Thinkwell
  20. Sweet Briar has not closed yet - since it wasn't a "business" entity just to unwind when the profits dried up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Briar_College
  21. Reminds me of the song "Landslide" which was the best part of the AGT finals last night: http://time.com/4494565/stevie-nicks-landslide-americas-got-talent-agt-fleetwood-mac/
  22. I looked at the preview - it looked identical to me except for the new Forward (from memory since my Math teacher mother owns it in another state). I think the price $79.99 for the student text is a little high considering it is just a reprint. Hopefully it did not cost a fortune to acquire the rights for an out of print text book.
  23. Derek posted a link to an online scanned classic version of Dolciani Structure and Method book 2 a while back. You actually check it out of the online library.
  24. Anything special about Sears-Zemansky-Young? or did you just happen to have it on hand College Physics or University Physics edition?
