  1. I agree with this statement but the school counselor could have a clue of online resources that this student could use at school (AoPS) for those periods such as math. Many top math students are just average or just above average in language arts so those could be the normal honors classes.
  2. That's a sign of immaturity - DS also realized his charter school B&M math was deficient so we "after-schooled" math most of that occurred during the summer months. Finally he has a good AP Calc teacher this year and we can do programming or something else next summer!

  4. 1) grade inflation is rampant teachers trying to keep admins, parents and students "happy" now versus have them face reality 2) the courses actually never complete the published or unpublished syllabus - too many weak students forced into higher level courses so they just dumb it down especially true in Math

  7. typical sequence: 9th grade Fall or Spring PSAT 10 - ONLY if you need some kind of standardized test to backup "parent grades" or love these kind of tests 10th grade Fall PSAT - for practice especially if student is expected to compete for the National Merit Scholarship 11th grade Fall PSAT - for "score", for most students it is just a practice for the SAT - I do recommend - not expensive and CB gives excellent online feedback 11th grade Spring SAT and/or ACT 12th grade Fall SAT or ACT retake to raise score (optional)

[i don't believe anyone posted this in the past so I apologize if this is a repeat.] Since College is now "big business" versus when I went to school decades ago - I guess we will reap what we sow.

  10. We do have open enrollment and quite a few charter schools to pick from so ask around! You may have to drive them - I do. Being from the northeast, it seems to be more of a matter that parents have lower expectations in AZ. I do agree that the AZ HS requirements have a one size college prep fits all mentality.   12. That's doable my nephew did Alg 1 -> Alg 2 -> Geo - he scored 700 on the SAT Get started with the text you have it will be fine The other stuff I mentioned was more for SAT prep. When is the older student taking that test? Next Spring 2017 or following year?

Ok SAT has almost no Trig except for right triangle stuff - others can speak to the ACT For the SAT prep there are Khan Academy support videos which you can see on Youtube - you can locate the ones you want and have a friend save them off on DVD for you (there are apps for that) such as in FLV or MP4 format. Eventually you should get at least one computer that works (maybe buy a used PC and load Ubuntu Linux which will be more efficient). google "SAT Chapter 20 Problem Solving and Data Analysis" for a PDF file
  14. if you didn't use Saxon algebra 1 then I do NOT recommend this approach. The Martin-Gay and Greene text is probably fine many of the reviews were high. I believe Saxon Algebra 2 (3rd) may have some Prob and Stats so you could use those lessons along with the Martin-Gay and Greene text. added: Saxon Lessons 116, 129 so not much there.
  15. I published the TOC above. For HS Algebra 2 I would cover this whole book especially if your student is math capable. You could cover Trig in your next class but I would find some basic Probability and Stats material to supplement (at least as much as needed for the PSAT). Teacher editions are usually not needed - a solutions manual is a better way to go.   18. Is there a "provider" that you can complain to? For now help him out - and have him stick it out - it is not easy leaving if you are a month into it
  19. unfortunately the list is tiny versus the number of locations (city) with at least one college.
  20. Just curious - are the university classes taught over a semester (15-16 weeks) or over the school year (30-32 weeks)?
  21. Large schools such as ASU have honors colleges so worth a look. Some of these large public U have special scholarship money for recruiting honors students from out of state. My nephew got a merit scholarship for UMass Honors where he is going now (from upstate NY).
