I kept checking the bird cam of the feeder at Cornell (Ithaca, NY). I wondered how their behavior was today. About a 1/2 hour or so before eclipse, the birds vanished from the feeder. I checked here and there and only heard honking a little of geese in the reeds. No birds were on the water until it seemed the eclipse passed, then the geese ventured out. Eventually a black type bird ventured back to the feeder. He kept looking up at the sky like he was wondering if the sky was going to fall, then decided to eat. Finally another bird joined him. That's my scientific observation of animal behavior today.😉

Wounded...personality for sure. Siblings can be in the same family and not all will seek revenge later in life. Have you ever read the book, A Child Called It, by David Pelzer? There's a good example right there of Wounded healer even though the abuse he sustained would be enough to make anyone want to seek revenge. And that's a lot of future baby chicks!! Poor thing. I can't recommend anything other than to make sure she stays hydrated until you can take her in. Adding broth helps to entice them to drink, so at least they are getting some fluids in.

I think about this situation from this kid's point of view: Now where did I put that thing?! - or- Shoot, I think I left it at friend's house during break, but that's so embarrassing to ask about. Like hey, did you happen to find a sausage in your basement? My grandpa gave it to me.

I have had several thoughts on this topic over the years as it really isn't on my list of 'let's do this'! First of all, the bus driver was a life saver to that kid that day, and if he gets paid anything near what our drivers get, it's about minimum wage. It is so true, so many can't afford PJ's or even sheets on their beds for that matter. I had a similar experience when I asked one of my students in a friendly way why she didn't dress up for PJ day (I hadn't either). Anyway, when I asked, this little girl sweetly said, "I don't have any payamas." (She couldn't pronounce it correctly.) And it hit me, she was right, I knew so many in that school who couldn't afford many of the basics, even 'payamas'. I have detested dress up days since then. Because it is true, so many staff and community members are already contributing to boots, shoes, snow pants, coats, hats, school supplies and food...already. Really, dress-up days can be hard for some because it's one more thing that they don't readily have. Second, I remember detesting a 2nd type of spirit week at the high school in February. January is usually the first full month when you begin to see progress in students and boom, you lose the momentum because some mom thought it would be 'a great idea'. At this time of the year when you finally feel you are seeing progress, then there are more holidays off and you also have to begin to prep them for year-end testing. Another interruption like this is just so frustrating and needless. I would like to be one of those fun, whimsical people too, but the preparation is just exhausting to me, thus another reason I would rather skip it. I can see why some parents would feel this way also.

"Sometimes you have to let go of not just the stuff but of the responsibility for finding the place for the stuff"- I will have to keep this in mind because I too have a hard time downsizing, but when I do, I want to know it has gone to a good cause. We recently spent 2 weeks in an Airbnb. The owner did a great job in stocking just the basics of what 1 would need, especially in the kitchen. And I remember thinking that it was great because it was just the basics and we certainly got along just fine. (I only wish I could do that at my home!) Yesterday I had to fetch something out of the attic which I hadn't been in since before our trip. I was pleasantly surprised because I had forgotten that I had cleaned and gotten rid of some things in December and it actually looked so much better! I had the mental picture in my brain of the old way and it was nice to see that I really had made some progress. All I can say is I hear ya on this. I have purged a lot, but still have more to go. We loved so many of these great books for science experiments, etc. I hate to part with them. 🤷‍♀️

Sadly, we have had a whole lot less birds the last 2 winters. Like, I saw 1 flicker at my suet feeder this winter, just once. Usually we have nuthatches, juncos, sparrows and chickadees in the winter also. But nope! I'm glad to hear ya'll have them because I was beginning to think it had to do with global warming (we hardly had any bees last summer, too). But there were acres of woods thinned around me 2 years ago, so I am hoping that is the cause. At least there is hope they will be back as the trees reforest themselves. 🤷‍♀️ We do have eagles, blue herons, sandpipers, hummingbirds, quail, turkeys, etc. in the summer though.

We just got back from Maui and was shocked by grocery prices at Safeway and Foodland. Like, how can anyone make it here with prices like these, let alone rent, utilities... at least on the mainland, I am finally seeing prices come down to what it was about 3 years ago on some things. Eating out was expensive also, but at least I could make my meal stretch 2 or 3 dinners. We were finally able to make it to Costco which helped. We bought crab for $20 (which was better than the mainland) and had enough for 3 people. Also had salmon which would have been twice as much as a restaurant. Surprisingly, the cost of gas wasn't much higher than here (except now that we've returned, our prices have dropped). We never made it to Target or Walmart, so can't compare.

Now I see how it works. But you are right, once you get things figured out and the site can become public, that will be helpful to others looking for a church. Thanks for the explanation.

I like to EASILY see the service times, and not to have to look for it. -directions/map -when you get to it, a current Facebook page with CURRENT happenings. Some churches I look at and nothing has been posted for a year or more, and it makes me wonder why. It gives security that the church is still very active in the community. (And pics of events that show that.) -complete recordings of services including the music -events -charities that are supported

New school policies stink for sure. I remember the reason I found lice on a kid was because he had a rash from shoulder to shoulder and I remember the bear claw way he was scratching behind his ear. So when I did a head check, the nits were practically waving at me, all ready to hatch. I've never seen anything like it. 30 years later, I've never forgotten it. I felt so bad for the kid because he had so many and his family never knew. They had to shave him bald to get rid of them. But when you think about it, what the schools are doing IS ABUSE, by ignoring it. The stigma of having lice is so emotionally damaging to a kid. You are right, the only thing you can do is stay away from them. And we've seen how stigmatizing that is to kids. Because kids do that to unpopular kids all the time. Praying for you that it will get better soon!

I'm reading Matterhorn, by Karl Malentes, fictional novel about the Vietnam War. I've never read a book about the war and was only a kid at the time. It's a real eye opener about what our young men went through and the decisions these often 19 and 20 year olds had to make. (By the state of our current youth in schools presently, I can't fathom them in the same light. Sadly, I think they'd be easy targets in the same situations.)

Lice shampoo nor Cetaphil didn't work for us. Tea tree oil mixed with vegetable oil worked over several days. Work it into the scalp, wrap head with saran wrap and leave on at least an hour. Wash and rinse with vinegar. I recently read that using a hair dryer helps dry up the nits or the holding glue so they fall off easier. I also purchased the Zapper and use that whenever we may have been exposed. I feel for you, it is not fun!

Do you ever preheat your oven and when you open the door to put your cookie dough in for instance, smoke comes billowing out? The smoke is from grease inside your oven that splattered when you broiled your burgers, etc. Or when your light inside isn't very bright, because of the baked on grease covering the case. Those are times I clean my oven, because I don't like caked on gunk. And in the middle of winter when it's 20 degrees outside, letting the self-clean oven helps to warm up the house even better!

The first thing you need to know in business is to know your product and your environment. You earned an F, now be on your way! This is kind of long, but thought I would share what is happening in our area: Your story sounded all too familiar. But I knew I had read similar comments on our local Facebook page in the past few days and finally found it. In our rural area, it seems 2 young guys are, knocking on doors as late as 9pm, it’s been pitch black for at least 4 hours and we too are in minus temperatures, with almost a foot of snow on the ground. What is this, the new ‘dumb and dumber’?! They’re lucky they haven’t been shot at yet. (Plenty of people have guns for hunting, or just because they live off the beaten path. Common sense tells you not to go to down those roads late at night in our area.) There is no reason in h…that people should be going door to door at that time of night, except to case the joint. (Thinking: Hmm…someone is home, or not. While my friend talks to you, I will observe what you have in your house…) This crap is not ok. I hope you have notified the authorities and post your experience on your local FB page for your neighbors. (Yeah, I’m kind of fired up right now writing this as I hear about what is going on in the world!) Some people are saying they are LDS missionaries from the next town over. Suggestions have been to report them to the local LDS churches, because this is too late to go knocking. Others have left these comments: -came the other day while I was trying to leave on a Friday, and they literally blocked my way out of the driveway. -showed up in my parent’s place at 9pm, walking right past locked gates -2 older guys claiming to be missionaries took off speeding down the road when asked to confirm who they were -2 guys walked up to me striking up a conversation while I was cleaning the snow off my car. (Remember this is in a wooded area. But how about, hey, can we help?!) -another says, ‘As they are still young, social skills aren’t fully developed and some can seem pushier than others but they do mean well.’ Just all around shady to me. I would be interested to hear if anyone else is finding the same. But seriously, someone is going to get hurt eventually. I hope these young men figure this out before it’s too late.

For so long, they seemed to be ignoring literary elements and just making kids 'cite' their answers, even in elementary school. Maybe the pendulum is swinging back again 😉

Oh, good idea! It must be something someone liked and decided to share with staff. Out of curiosity, is your doc about a popular topic recently? With dyslexia laws passing, there's so much on structured literacy now. I see so many different things on Instagram on so many things education related. Fun music and movement ideas, art, speech...just not enough time for all of it!

It seems suspicious to me that suddenly after being available for several years, 'school systems' from all over the country are making a request. I would personally take caution and ignore the requests at least for a while and see what happens.
