    Prayers for a speedy recovery!
  2. Both Susan and OtherJohn have been PM'd. Hopefully, the glitch will be fixed soon, but this is a holiday weekend. I'm sure the technical staff won't be available until Tuesday.
  3. I just sent a PM to Susan also. OtherJohn hasn't read my PM from the 29th.
  4. We do, but I use it for self-education primarily. For my 17 yo, I pick specific lectures because she doesn't like the format. It's been helpful explaining some math concepts. She's also completed a lecture series on different cultures around the world. This summer, we're working through Listening and Understanding Great Music. It is a lecture format. Works wonderfully well for me, but not so well for my daughter. I was one of the beta testers and will be renewing this fall. So far, I don't think they've added a course I wouldn't enjoy. Edited to add I believe there's still a free trial period available.
  5. It's crazy today in the DFW area! Rude drivers are blocking right hand lanes of traffic, cutting in front of people. Thankfully, I filled the tank yesterday before any of the hysteria hit.
  6. We live in an apartment. Keeping gas is not possible. I have a small flood policy just in case because areas near us flooding a couple of years ago. We've on the first floor. My coverage is just enough to help replace essentials. Even though it's sort of cheap, it's more expensive per unit coverage than my renter's insurance.
  7. I used to feel this way about donations of items rather than cash, but volunteering at a donation center almost immediately after a cat. 4 tornado hit our area taught me a lot. It takes a lot of volunteers to sort & handle donations. Not to mention the storage area that's needed. For every person who donated nice, gently used clothes, there were so many that donated nasty dirty things. Cash really is much better during a crisis or the donation of specifically requested items.
  8. Strange because I could not open it and I have moderator status as well. PM already sent to OtherJohn.
  9. I have sent a pm to OtherJohn. Hopefully, he will be able to correct the problem.
  10. Please stay safe. Praying for everyone in the path of this storm.
  11. A family member has Christian Healthcare Ministries. We like it better than some of the others. The highest level of coverage is $150 / person. The first $500 is not covered. Prescriptions for maintenance of health issues are not covered. So my high blood pressure medicine would not be not covered. CHM offers limited coverage of pre-existing conditions. I believe it's limited to $15,000 for the first year and increases year by year. I don't remember all the details. Also, you pay CHM directly rather than sending checks to different people each month. It is limited to practicing Christians, but the application form doesn't require a signature from your pastor. Several years ago, I had Samaritan's Ministries. When is was time to renew, I was between church homes. Without a signature, I had to talk to a pastor with SM. That period of time was very stressful for other reasons. Having the "jump through hoops" to renew made it worse for me. This family member had day surgery that was covered by CHM. The surgeon would not accept any assurances of payment and required the full amount upfront. Thankfully, we had the money. It took CHM 5 months to pay us for the covered amount. Overall, we like CHM but there are issues with coverage as there would be with insurance.
  12. My daughter takes one class, Japanese, at a local non-profit school. It's not a co-op because there are no requirements for parents to volunteer. Her teacher charges $60 / month for 9 months. We may the tuition to the teacher. I've noticed for other classes tuition ranges from $40 - $80 / month depending on how often the class meets. There's an $100 annual registration fee. Although expensive for me, it's well worth the investment since my daughter loves studying Japanese. She's dual credit this year at our local CC, but unfortunately the language classes there are not very good.
  13. If you have a Central Market (HEB) near you, they carry a variety of loose leaf teas in the bulk section. By the pound, the tea is expensive, but we buy a small amount of different ones to try. Also, try local Asian markets. They can have some interesting teas.
  14. One of my favorite teas is Jasmine. I also really like a peach honey tea.
  15. Please remember no politics on the forums. There are appropriate private groups for that type of discussion. I've hidden a post this morning that crossed the line. Thanks.
  16. We used Singapore math for elementary and middle school. I never saw anything objectionable, but if I remember correctly the supplementary software program had aliens or something similar. Singapore math was a favorite in our home!
  17. As wonderful a cause as this is, please do not post "Go Fund Me" links. It's okay to start a thread about the general situation and ask members to send PMs for additional information. Thanks.
  18. I hate access codes as well! For couple of my daughter's classes the access code made sense, but for most it's just crazy. Thankfully, her biology class this year will use the same text and code for both required semesters. Her French instructors used the same text and code for a year as well.
  19. Forum Use guidelines ask that all members be civil and courteous in their posts. I've hidden one post that was a bit too aggressive in tone written as a response to another member. Please remember, there are many varied views on homeschooling represented on the forums.
  20. Hello, Welcome to the Well Trained Mind forums. The boards are inclusive and represent many different views of homeschooling and religion. You'll find members who share your views and those that don't.
  21. May I suggest posting to the General Education board. You're likely to get responses there.
  22. Will we delete (or close) posts? At times, when threads get too intense, we have to delete (or close) them. Even threads that start off civil can quickly devolve into mayhem, and we may choose to preemptively close them. Please don't ask why the thread (or your post) was deleted. It wasn't necessarily something you said. Very likely, somebody before you or after you posted something that had to come down. Sometimes, the only way we can remove the troublesome posts is by removing the whole thread. And a question like "where did my post go?" or "where did the ________ discussion go?" only serves to bring the discussion back to the boards. Posts that ask "where is X post?" will be deleted. We may also delete posts that do not add to the topic at hand. This discussion is better suited for one of the sub-forums. It is very close to a rehash of a deleted thread.
  23. I was taught that dancing was sinful - very sinful, so I never learned. Even now as much as I would like to learn how to dance, I tense up. Strange because some other conservative teachings haven't affected me very much.
