I am EO. I just want to jump in to say that what we believe cannot be summarized like this. A holistic picture of our Faith as a whole is necessary to really get the whole picture.
Firstly, the Trinity is a mystery. These things are hard to understand.
What I think is VITAL to understand about our theology is that Jesus, as God, sacrificed Himself on the cross for us. He wasn't left on the cross by the Father or sacrificed by the Father for redemption. Jesus is God, and would have had the power to stop the course of events at any point. The whole Garden of Gethsemane situation is more of a conflict between Jesus' human nature wanting to find another way to reopen the door for mankind, one with less pain and suffering. But in the end He submits His human will to His and His Father's Divine will.
