Bobby's Airplanes, and The Popcorn Party... :-) Bobby's airplanes has a boy with a grandfather who is helping him choose the ideal airplane somehow. Such fun ideas! A plane with a rollerskating rink & chocolate malts I think. Popcorn Party is about a little old lady who throws a popcorn party for the kids in the neighborhood.. she makes all the popcorn at once, and there is a popcorn snow in her yard! :-) Hmmm... these were before I was born, but that's what my Mom read to me! I also loved, In A People House, Come over to my house, and The Bible in pictures for little eyes (NOT the new version, IMO the old one has much better pictures) Willy Woo, Winnie the Pooh books, and Bambie Gets lost...

Airplane Seating and a Naive Mommy
lcelmer replied to july19's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Main point to all who have kids.. PAY THE EXTRA TO GET SEATS TOGETHER!!! :D Really, most people may be willing to move, but should they have to? Nope, if you need to sit by people on your party, pay to choose the seats. :) -

You know hsing is working when your 2yo says...
lcelmer replied to nikkid's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
As a science project we started a tank of sea monkeys several years ago. My then 7 year old son and then 4 year old daughter are sooo excited... I was explaining that they are not really monkeys, but a kind of brine shrimp. Charlotte (4) says "Ohh, we are going to feed them and they will get bigger?" Mom: Yes Charlotte: " Really Big? Mom : Not too big. Charlotte: But just right to eat? Mom: What ? Charlotte: Big so we can eat them right? Mom: (Doubled over laughing)... Not these, they are too small , and are going to be our pets. Charlotte: (looking relived) ooohhhhhh.... Big grin. :-D Life is good.... enjoy the gifts. -
Are you a secular or Christian homeschooler?
lcelmer replied to dcurry's topic in General Education Discussion Board
this is tricky to answer... I am pretty committed to using Curriculum that line up with my worldview in certain subjects, (Bible, History/ Social Studies & science) and not so concerned about others. We did do a secular charter school with DD in K.. but it was only with the understanding that I could alter or skip any objectionable material. I won't be using it again, but it was ok. My reasons for homeschooling are religious, I hope to pass on a biblical worldview in many areas to my kiddos. -
Binder ? for the Well-Planned Day Planner
lcelmer replied to momtolgd's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It might be easier if you have more in the binder. I have 1.25" of other paper behind the planner, and it flips just fine... Maybe that is because the extra bulk moves the planner more toward the top of the rings? When I was setting up I just had the planner out for a while, and then popped it back in with a unit of tapestry. It seems to turn nicely for me that way. OK, I tried it with just the planner, (removed the 1.5" of paper behind the planner) and it was more difficult if the binder was flat... not too horrible, but harder to get it to lay flat. You might try adding bulk in the back to see if that helps -
Would you say anything about this?

Well Planned Day binder ??
lcelmer replied to PentecostalMom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have a unit of classic TOG in mine along with the planner. It seems to work ok, but it is pretty stuffed. I'm going to use it for 4 weeks of TOG at a time instead. :-) 9 weeks of TOG is 1" thick, that's about 175 sheets, but 18 are in sheet protectors. Oh, wait, I had a 95 page lesson planner book from a teacher store in there too... The well planned day planner & the 1" (175 pgs) TOG 9 weeks fits fine. :-) If you add in a 95page lesson plan book, it's a bit tight. :D -
If you have HST plus you just type in the isbn number & it automatically fills in the info from amazon, author, title, picture. :-) You can also use the custom field to input other useful info, like year plan or reading level... :-) This allows you to sort the library items by that as well. The Big dots for year plan I saw somewhere once upon a time, but I don't think I've seen the little dots for reading level anywhere else. I want a cue cat or other scanner, but don't need them really... It is almost as fast to write the isbn of a whole shelf of books, then just suck the info into HST+. I don't usually buy the whole year of books, that's just a bit much $ for me, (we use the library) but I did inherit 2 years of sonlight books that I am almost done weaving into TOG. Since I was trying to get them all into the hst anyhow, and decide when in TOG to use them, it wasn't much more time to add dots. :-) I use page protectors for the READING ASSIGNMENT pages only of the year plan. That way I can use a fine tip sharpie to write in any book substitutions, but I don't ruin the printed page itself. Sharpie is a amazing on page protectors.. wipes right off with rubbing alcohol, but stays put till then.

Dr Hive: Asthma preventative inhalers
lcelmer replied to Quad Shot Academy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
"I would also point out that though inhaled steroids can hinder growth temporarily, uncontrolled asthma has far worse implications. Chronic reduced oxygenation to the body's cells will definitely affect growth, to say nothing of the effects of scar tissue building up in the lungs from inflammation, and how that can also lead to permanent loss of function." :iagree: I was kind of worried about taking my rescue inhaler when preggo, but my midwife gently pointed out that a low o2 level to the baby would be much worse than the medication. :tongue_smilie: -
I use big & teeny dots on the spine, and shelve by year plan, then unit. Year 1 = Red Year 2 = Yellow Year 3 = green year 4 = Blue Lower Grammar = Red Upper Grammar = Yellow Dialectic = Green Rhetoric= Blue Place large dot of year plan on spine at the bottom (multiple Years, I just layer with a crescent of each color showing) Stick the smaller dot of the reading level at the top edge of the circle (For Multiple ages, I just layer with a crescent of each color showing) Write the unit number in the large dot, I use M/U for multi unit. Then I add a covering square of book tape over the label area so no dots fall off. :D We have a lot of storage (basement) so I am trying to keep only the current year out on the shelves in the Living Room.. the other year plans & book are supposed to be boxed up in clear plastic tubs ( BIG) labeled with the year plan. ( I'm doing y2 u4, in July, and prepping all of year 3, so its a mix right now in the LR. ) Also, having the supplement CDs in a cd insert in the TOG binder has helped me. I'll see if I can find my pic of the dots.. it is really nice to see what goes where. Aha! Found them! OK, that top book is all years book I think, so I put big dots for all the years on it. I left off the level of reading, because I like it as a read aloud together book, so I wrote "ALL r/a" on the dot. The lower book is a year 3, unit 1, upper grammar book. :-) This one is a year 2 (yellow big dot) Lower & Upper grammar (little dots) unit 2 (2 written in) I like having the resource lists printed out in sheet protectors & kept in the TOG binder itself. I decided to color code the lists too... Hey, it's pretty right? :tongue_smilie: I don't use library thing yet.. I may switch someday, but I do use HStracker plus to mange my library. If I don't keep track somehow, I end up buying doubles.

I'm using it with TOG. :-) Love my zippered binder! I have the pages for the current unit in it with the planner. :-D The only thing I don't like, is the binder size. It is too big to grab easily with one hand on the spine (it's kind of slippery) and there is no handle. It would be REALLY nice to have a handle. I might do that myself later. I found an easy way to remind myself to put books on hold for the upcoming weeks, I use a post it LABEL... that I stick over the weekend section. As soon as I do the holds, buy & pull the books we need, I toss the note... :D The spiral bound planner is also 3 hole punched, so it goes right in the binder if you want. I usually just stick it on the top of what's in there already though...

Quick question re: TOG
lcelmer replied to MaryCatherine's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Is the weekly overview printed on yellow paper, or is it on white paper with a yellow border? If you have yellow paper, then I'm pretty sure it is Classic, if it is white, them probably redesigned. Redesigned has 1/4 circles of different colors on the lower right hand corner of the student Activities pages. Classic has blue paper with printing for the Student assignment pages. I'm not sure about the dates, it might depend on which year plan you have. Do you have the loom CD? If not, it will be harder to sell... If you bought it from Tapestry yourself, I believe that you can get a replacement loom disk from them. Anyone buying it from you may not be able to. PM me with details! :-D I've got a list of units I still need... :D
