  1. So, I've read some old threads and lots of amazon reviews and I still can't decide...LOL! I read Malory in college but I haven't read any Children's or YA retellings. I want to do a good job introducing the Arthurian legends with DD11 this fall (in 6th grade). I feel like I messed up with greek mythology last year. We started with Black Ships Before Troy and she was so confused and didn't like it at all. So we went with easier versions of Illiad and Odyssey and she was so-so on those. Then we started Percy Jackson, for fun. NOW, months later, DD says she loves Greek mythology, and is moving on to the Heroes of Olympus series on her own (we listened to the whole Percy Jackson series on Audio book on family car rides). DD shows no inclination of interest right now in the fantasy/magic genre (other than greek myths) or in the idea of reading about knights, kings, etc. So, I want to do something in the reverse order this time. I want to know if there is something fun and appealing (maybe with modern elements?) in the Arthurian realm that's appropriate for middle grades...then follow it up with a traditional story. I'm not really excited about Once and Future King. It doesn't seem quite to be the feel I was looking for in our "fun" pick -- but maybe I could be persuaded? I was looking at Pyle, Roger Lancelyn Green, Barbara Leonie Picard or Elizabeth Lodor Merchant for a traditional version. There are fewer negative reviews of the last two, but maybe it's because they are more obscure. ;-) Then DH pulled up a couple of free Arthur stories from LibriVox, but I don't know as much about those to know if they are any good. Anyone care to help me decide?
  2. My son has chronic, horrible bad breath. We have taken him to the dentist - received no input. We have tried mouth rinses. No avail. It is worse when he has a sinus infection but that is not the case right now. I have even tried brushing & flossing for him - no help. any advice would greatly be appreciated - everyone comments on it & he is really frustrated by it... Blessings
  3. I could not *bleeping* BELIEVE it when I saw it. In the winter, there is not much room to put the snow. HOWEVER, this jerk blows 80% of the snow from his driveway against the side of our house and onto our lawn. He has no snow piled against his house at all and you can see how much higher the snow is on our lawn than his. I say nothing b/c I don't want to be a jerk like him. Well, we got about a foot of snow a week ago and since it hasn't been above freezing, it's still around. He uses a snow blower, which leaves a layer of snow on his driveway, which he then drove over for a week. It is now a layer of ice. So yesterday, I heard all this noise from the side of the house. I could tell he was trying to scrape up the ice but it sounded SO LOUD and thumpy. I had to take DS to soccer and when I drove past his driveway I saw him THROW a shoveful of ice against my house! I stopped and yelled to him to stop throwing ice against my house. I said there is no reason to do that and that he was going to damage our siding. He said OK. The nerve. :glare:
  4. Do you love order? Do you love clean, uncluttered, open spaces? Do you strive to have cut inefficiency from your life? As in, when you put away laundry, do you gather piles purposefully to minimize trips through your house? Do you organize clothes in the kids' drawers until they have the most efficient putting away and pulling out process? Are your kitchen cabinets organized to save time and steps? Do processes/efficiency take up a lot of our thinking time? Do you like things to be even - cut things into twos, fours, etc? More to come later...
  5. I was interested in finding out what kinds of homeschoolers made up this classical education board. Please choose the option that best describes your family. (Choices to follow).
  6. Mostly I'm a nice person. Really. But... I'm having trouble figuring out how to rearrange my thinking about short-term mission trips, and I'm sure someone here can help. I've received many requests from friends/family for donations towards their mission trips. The trips are all about 2 weeks long, and they're always non-specific about *why* they are going, and *what they plan to do while they're there*. The not-so-nice part of me is critical about this, and whispers in my ear that $8000 for a two week trip to Africa sounds like a vacation rather than a true ministry to others. I'm not proud of my thoughts on this. At the same time, I think of what $8000 could do in the hands of a missionary who's already "on the ground" and has made a greater commitment to a cause and/or ministry. In most areas of life, I'm a cheerful giver, and I love to give when I can to real missionaries, with a goal and a purpose. Is there a reason I should look more kindly on the requests from short-term'ers?
  7. At what age do you allow your kids (if at all) to begin watching Harry Potter movies? And the books?
  8. Before I open my mouth and make a fool of myself, I thought I would get some opinions here... In light of the issues with pirates lately (murder, kidnapping families, etc.,) do you think it would be appropriate for a youth organization to use "Pirates" as a theme for a community-wide event right now?
  9. I'm specifically asking regarding unschooled kids. In my area, there are SO many more unschooled homeschooling families than traditionally or classically homeschooled. Therefore, many of our homeschooling friends "do school" in a different way. My son asked me today about one of our friends, and why he "doesn't do school work" (a.k.a. table work). I had to do the dance around it a little and explain how all families choose what they think is right, and have different ways of doing things, different ways of learning things, etc. But it does seem awkward and weird to explain this. The fact is, even though I enjoy their friendship and love the kids having play time together, I disagree with their educational methods, and we won't ever choose to do things that way. But of course, I don't say this to DS....I try to spin some positive light on what they are doing so as not to sound critical of our friends. Has this happened to you, and how did you respond to your DC? I'm looking for a more articulated answer to give DS..... Thanks! - Stacey
  10. Even married ones? How do you deal with that? If your dh or SO admits to lusting, does it hurt your feelings? Is it a dent in your marriage? Or is it something all men deal with because of how they're wired and as long as there's no acting on the lust, you just deal with it? I'm asking because a male friend admitted he struggles with lust. I've never, ever, in my life had someone admit that to me, so I'm wondering what to do with this, if it should affect how I view this man or it should have any affect at all. Did this make sense?
  11. Is your bed against the wall or do you have two open sides? If it is against the wall, who has to sleep by the wall? Our bed has always been near the wall and I always have "wall duty" I'm thinking of rearranging the furniture, but don't know how I'd like not having the wall.
