  1. So disappointed. I thought this thread was going to be stories of Thanksgiving meals gone disastrously wrong. Or family feuds. C'mon Hive, you're letting me down. Where's the entertainment? :D
  2. I got an email from Biblioplan about a sale, but the email is on my computer and I can't check the details from here (ipad).
  3. A wonderful Christmas present might be to upgrade their internet connection for them if it's an option where they live. Then they could Skype with you and other family. Maybe a group gift? Pay just the amount it would cost over their normal fees for a year? They are probably wishing they could Skype too.
  4. Ah, but it should be pumpkin pie. Alas, no tinned pumpkin here. At least not in the regular supermarket, you can buy it online here if anyone is desperate: http://www.usafoods.com.au/Beverages?search=pumpkin I browse this site when I'm feeling nostalgic. Wait, wasn't this thread about Christmas carols? I just attended something where we sang a few carols and it got me realising that the tune to Away in a Manger is totally different here. (Bonus: this takes place at a Carols by Candlelight event!) Carols by Candlelight is a little different than the church type I went to in the US. These are outside (cuz ya know, it's warm here and we can do that!) and are a community event. It's like a concert in the park with different groups/individuals performing. Everyone brings their picnic blankets/chairs to sit on. Toward the end they pass out candles. Sometimes there's a Santa visit. Each community has one, larger towns will have several. ETA: This is a fancy one. There's not usually an orchestra except at the big ones! ;)
  5. I was just at Woolie's and noticed the boxes of crackers were actually called bon-bons. :D
  6. We DO have Christmas crackers in Australia, I think you must have read someone's post incorrectly. ;)
  7. I remember seeing Christmas crackers in the stores in the US but I always thought they were actual crackers, to eat. I didn't look closely enough at the package I guess. It wasn't until I had my first Christmas in Australia that I realised they weren't what I thought they were. I sat at the table wondering where everyone had gotten their crown until someone showed me. So now we have that annual picture with the paper hats. Wouldn't be Christmas without them!
  8. It changed about the time that the other sort of thongs started to enjoy rising popularity. I called them thongs too, then switched to flip-flops, then moved to Australia and it feels really weird to call them thongs again!
  9. A few I've seen that have stayed with me: 4RNR4ME-- on a Toyota Forerunner. JENSDAY-- on a Dodge Daytona. I81UOT22-- fake one sold in a dinosaur museum gift shop. Seen any memorable license plates?
  10. Have you looked at the I See Sam books? They're very incremental and might help her build her confidence. But...she's only four...just follow her lead. If she wants to back off then let her back off. :)
  11. I'm so glad you posted this!!!!!!!!!!! I was ignoring the sale banner...but I hadn't thought of those SOTW audios! Yay!
  12. I just got our new edition level B today. ;) Can't really review it much since I haven't used it, I'd only be repeating the webinar. I'm a sucker for a more visually appealing layout, so the new layout was enough to tempt me, and the info in the webinar was enough to push me over the edge. :D But I'll use the new edition with my younger three children and I already had the manipulatives. Did you search the yahoo group messages? There's been some talk there but of course no one has been all the way through the new edition yet.
  13. I supplemented RS B with MM for awhile. It gave me a break from teaching RS, gave my son extra practice and allowed him to focus on one thing at a time. I always found when we went back to RS that things clicked better. If she likes worksheets, take a break from RS and try MM for awhile, but don't give up on RS completely. With MM you can choose the topics you want to focus on. I started my oldest with RS B. I was excited to start my next son with A. I was surprised to find I hated teaching A. I put it aside and am now starting B with him at 6yo. I just got the 2nd edition and after looking through it I am looking forward to it, enough so that I'm going to try the 2nd edition of A with my 4yo when she's ready. BTW, on the yahoo group in the files section there is a file that explains how to do the fractals lesson in a homeschool. The lesson in the manual was designed for a classroom.
  14. We drive a Volvo XC-90, it's an SUV that seats seven. Only four kids, but we have an extra seat so could seat one more. We often keep the empty backseat folded down for more cargo room. My kids keep telling me we need to have one more kid to fill up the car!
  15. Absolutely I'd go. As mentioned above, a good one will do an xray before any treatment. They will likely recommend a schedule of at least three times a week in the beginning. It will be pricey.
  16. Up until your last sentence I was wondering where you live that you're hearing fireworks very often! No real advice, we just did our best to comfort our old dog who was afraid of fireworks, etc. I think trying to muffle the noise is a great idea. Hopefully some dog experts will chime in!
  17. Tall bookshelves in a small walk-in closet. The 'game closet'. I can keep some games out of the reach of little hands that way. The kids are in there all the time, and their friends head there first when they come over, but it's near our lounge so not far away. A friend has hers on open shelving in her lounge, I find that too cluttered for my taste, but it certainly works for them! My biggest helpful tip...I keep a small bucket (a bowl or box would work) in our closet to throw loose game pieces into. When the kids are pulling out multiple games to play it's inevitable that we'll find some pieces around the house. We just throw them in the bucket and we know to check there if we're missing any pieces. Every few months or so the bucket starts looking full so we go through the whole bucket and sort the pieces into their proper games (I get the kids to help). Lovely idea! My kids often end up stacking the games on the floor in front of the shelves because they can't get them back on the shelf correctly.
  18. I don't get why this is so disturbing. She ran (well, drove). They chased. If the officer had managed to stop the vehicle by shooting the tires, she wouldn't have been able to lead them in a high-speed chase, endangering the lives of her children. Probably afraid they'd find the drugs?
  19. I agree with Pinterest. You can create boards for different subjects, and can use any keywords you need to as a description of the pin to help you remember what's on that site. Even better would be OneNote or Evernote. Screen clippings, links, etc all arranged however you want.
  20. I think you are misunderstanding the question. OP knows how to create a bookmark in Safari, but wants to know how to get them back if the iPad were to ever crash. Best bet is to sync in itunes on your computer or backup to the cloud.
  21. I use Method foaming soap. I bought three in dispensers (one for each sink in our house) and buy the refills. We go through much less soap now!
  22. I'm sitting here holding my beautiful four month old. He's just woken up from a nap in my arms. He is gazing up at me adoringly. Lovely smiles, I am his favourite person on earth. Sigh. Yours was like this fourteen years ago, right? I refuse to think fourteen years into my future...denial, denial, denial!
