  1. We use olive oil, too, and a little sea salt on our potatoes. 5 minutes in the microwave first, then about an hour in the oven. I put a cookie sheet under the rack with the potatoes to catch any drips/salt. We love the skin when they're cooked this way. I ate so many sweet potatoes as a kid, I don't care for them now. Maybe I should try them cooked like this...
  2. And if so, what is it? Contest question, of sorts. Nothing I'd benefit from, but they can't find the (definite) answer on google, so I told them I'd ask here.
  3. I really liked Of Mice and Men with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. Also, To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck, minus the courtroom scenes involving the woman who played Mayella - her 'acting' made me crazy!
  4. If you got a hard copy of the original pic, you could just scan it back into your computer.
  5. Congratulations!! That's terrific! If you didn't do C25K, do you mind my asking what you DID do? :bigear:
  6. This is pretty much how we've always done it, too. We do usually do a potluck of appetizers/snacky foods and the 'extra' cookies are added to the buffet. :) If you do it in December, it's fun to do a Dirty Santa swap, too.
  7. 2 syllables that doesn't have a nickname is what we wanted for our first, too. We went with Dylan. For our second, I was ok with a nickname, as long as it was a nickname that had at least 2 syllables. We went with Oliver. :)
  8. Had my first when I was 27 and 2 months. Had my second when I was 2 months shy of 33.
  9. I planned by the week, and did my planning on the weekend before the Monday we started. I had each subject and each day's work for a week, then highlighted it as we finished it. If we missed a day (or three, lol) I'd double up until we were back on track, or do it on the weekend or whenever. It DID help me stay on track to see what I wanted to finish for the week. Of course, a couple of times, I just threw in the towel and changed the DATES on a particular week that we didn't get much of anything done.
  10. I go though the house and get the big 3 first: garbage, laundry, toys. Toss the garbage, toys in the bins, laundry started - or at least in a pile to sort. That's probably 80% of our 'mess' at any given time, so it's motivating to see fast results, IMO. Then I clean the kitchen top to bottom, and do the room-by-room thing previously mentioned, with any remaining clutter. I avoid doing bathrooms at all costs since DH will, but if I have to, I save those for last.:D
  11. I haven't found a good pair of jeans that I LIKE since my oldest son was born in 2001. None of my pre-pregnancy jeans have ever fit me the same way - (not that I ever really got back down to that size) my whole body changed...even my shoe size! Lucky for me, we've spent the past 5 years in FL, and are looking at 4 more, so I can get by with shorts year-round, with a few capris and yoga pants thrown in for variety.
  12. Ah, ok. We have just moved and haven't been in a school supply store in a while, and have never browsed for the paper b/c I'd been printing it online. There's one down the road, though, so I'll check it out. Thanks for the info!
  13. My son is gearing up for his 2nd grade year. With his copywork last year, we used the large-lined paper with the dashed middle line...I'd just print it off the computer for him each day, or he'd write in his notebook that had large lines on the bottom half with room for drawing up top. I'd say that his handwriting is at least average, maybe slightly better than average. When we don't use the middle-dashed line, though, his spacing/sizing of letters (vertically and horizontally) gets really warped. I can't remember if this is a recommendation from WTM or not - when do you switch to 'smaller' lined paper? I know we're not ready for 'normal' lines, but I think moving to the middle sized format would work. However, it seems I have a bad case of fog-head and can't remember where I read that, nor where to find it to print or purchase.
  14. I haven't been to the actual homeschool part of it, but late Sept - early Dec is a great time to go to WDW, minus the longer holiday weekends tossed in there. (Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc.) See if they have the free dining plan if you book a pkg. I know they're offering it again this year, but we're going too late to use it, so I'm not positive what the dates are. (We're going mid-Oct.)
  15. On another board I belong to, there's major drama - Somebody asked how to word "Let the poster beware" - ie watch what you say (post)... Caveat perscriptor was one suggestion, but they weren't sure if it was correct usage.. Anyone know?
  16. French dip sandwiches - Deli sliced roast beef - Beef consomme (enough to cover how ever much beef your family will need, we only need one can) - Swiss cheese slices - Sub rolls :: heat the beef in the consomme on the stove, while preheating the oven :: split the rolls, place on a cookie sheet, and add the heated beef and then top with the cheese (but not the consomme, save that for dipping) :: toast to melt Serve hot with a little dipping juice, raw veggie slices, chips, fruit, etc. and/or a side salad.
  17. We're in south FL right now, and don't use an umbrella school, either. I'm glad to see some WTM in the Tampa area, though - we just bought a house in Dunedin and we'll be moving up there in about 3 weeks. I haven't seriously started looking for another group of hs'ers to join when we get there, yet...but I'd love any info on the whole "playing basketball at the PS" thing. I've heard of kids doing that, but haven't looked into it much. Is there an age requirement? I've got a 1st/2nd grader. :)
  18. I have 2 that are almost 6 years (5.75, technically) apart - a 7 year old and a 1 year old. This is just our first year of hs with the first one, so I can't offer any BTDT advice. :)
  19. I just found out about these, and stayed up last night making ours. :) Looking forward to using them this week!! I used clear shoeboxes, but made my own label things. I didn't use numbers, but made little 2-sided cards (like in a library book). On one side, there's a picture of a boy at a desk and when he finishes what's in the box, he can turn it around and see a 'thumbs up' pic. I didn't buy the book, so my version is probably a very watered-down one, but I LOVE the concept! I need all the organization I can get, lol.
