  1. Another person voting other. :) DD 13 works independently in the morning and we work together in the afternoon. The mix of independent work and together time varies from week to week depending on DD's needs.
  2. Here's another link to look at: http://www.headcoverings-by-devorah.com/ DD 13, the sewing machine whiz, makes mine. :)
  3. This time of year (i.e. when it's cold), about five minutes of actually running the water. I use less in the summer.
  4. Tapestry of Grace (TOG) is for K-12, follows the four-year-cycle, and is Christian. I have no personal experience with it, but many ladies on this forum use it and could answer your questions. Biblioplan is another option.
  5. I've been looking through my copy of Wheelock's and thinking, "You know, this book is way better than I remember it being. Actually, I think it's the best Latin text I've ever seen." I'm definitely switching DD 13 from SYRWTLL to Wheelock, but I'm on the edge about DS 10, who's using LfC B. He dislikes the supposedly fun activities in LfC, so I think Wheelock's might be a good fit for him, but it seems so intense for a 10yo. Does anyone have experience using Wheelock's with youngish children? How fast did you move? Did your children like it? :bigear:
  6. You mean I have to choose?! I vote Twain, but I don't share his sentiments about Austen.
  7. No. No matter how good the school, it still wouldn't be personalised for my children, I wouldn't be there learning with my children and building relationships with them, and there'd still be the social issues that are unavoidable at school.
  8. I dislike creative spellings, but have no problem with traditional, non-English variations. I have one child with an uncommon name (Aline) and one with a traditional French spelling (Luc instead on Luke). DH and I realised that both of those names would be difficult for others to spell, but felt we had good reasons to choose them. What really surprises me is when people ask how to spell DD 13's name. Are there really variations on Hope? :001_huh: Two of my children's middle names are common English names spelt the French way (Julien and Alexandre), one is a traditional Scottish spelling (Alasdair), one is a less common but still correct form (Elisa), and the other two are perfectly normal.
  9. I love several of the ones already mentioned. Also, And the Skylark Sings with Me.
  10. Academics. I have a very long list of reasons, but that is number one.
  11. This is exactly the same situation as with DH and I. My dad walked me down the aisle, but DH did not ask him for permission to marry me.
  12. Well, DD is making pie right now. Does that count? :) We'll be having our dinner tomorrow.
  13. No, but he did ask me if he should ask my father. I told him he better not because I didn't think dad would say, "yes".
  14. Do you mind PMing me the names of the books? DD 13 is learning Norwegian and both of us would love to do more reading. I studied Norwegian in university and spent many happy summers in Norway. I was quite fluent, but my level as dropped significantly since then. Tusen takk (and sorry for hijacking your thread)! :)
  15. :seeya:Glad to know there are other NEMers here. DD 13 is doing NEM 2. She doesn't do all the questions, but there's really no pattern we follow in deciding which ones to do. Basically, DD choose which ones to do and if I think she needs more practice or if she hasn't covered much of a certain type of problem, then I'll assign more.
  16. Up until this year, I always alternated. We've now switched to doing both every day and are much happier. We spend 30-45 min on each, whereas before we were doing 1-1.5 hours two or three times a week. The lessons were simply to long and we ended up feeling burnt out, which is why we switched. Did I mention we're so much happier? ;) DCs 6, 8, and 10 are all done by noon, although history read-alouds are often done in the evening. DDs 13 and 15 work all day long.
  17. I use Spelling Wisdom with my natural spellers (and non-natural ones as well). They enjoy the dictations and don't get bored learning about things they already know.
