  1. :iagree: I had the same experience as Jenny (although I'm vegetarian, not vegan) and it hurt. For me, it is not, and has never been, a phase. Because of my knowledge and beliefs I have to be vegetarian. No, I'm not going to die if I eat meat, but I would be breaking my very strong ethical beliefs and I cannot do that. This does not mean I'm making a moral judgement about what you can eat. I even married a meat-eater! When your child says she wants to follow a diet that is healthier, cheaper, and better for the planet, why would you not support her? :confused:
  2. :cheers2: And yes, I'm posting to see how many posts I have. :001_smile:
  3. OP, if you are interested, I can PM you the names of some Catholic and Orthodox parishes in your area (I used to live in Victoria). I don't want to force you in this direction and I will not be offended if you choose not to go. It's just an idea you may wish to consider. :) :grouphug:
  4. I am so sorry, Jen. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  5. :iagree::iagree::iagree: I've lived in ON, so I'm not completely biased. :) Some of my children are enrolled in SelfDesign (and we're not unschoolers). The programme is awesome! Absolutely nothing has changed in our homeschool aside from my weekly reporting. Our learning consultant is filing DC's learning into the MOE's learning outcomes, despite my curriculum being completely different from the province's. So, even though you technically need to follow the BC curriculum, there is tons of flexibility.
  6. My kids don't do organised sports, their big activity is music. We have missed musical activities for church and family time on Sunday.
  7. I'll vouch for you. :) Kalanamak, I promise your DS can get across the border without a passport.
  8. DS 10 -- Currently doing LfC B, planning to switch to Henle I. DD 13 -- Switching from SYRWTLL 3 to Wheelock's. DD 15 -- Bradley's Arnold Latin Prose Compostition
  9. Congratulations, Cleo and your DD! And best of luck in your decision making.:)
  10. Jillian, I am in a similar position. I completely understand what you mean by something "missing" in the Mass and I'm also looking into EO. Feel free to PM me too, if you want. :)
  11. Thanks everyone. My brain keeps going in circles, "Wheelock's, no Henle, no neither, no definitely Wheelock's, no I think Henle would be better, ..." :tongue_smilie: Realistically, for my DS, Henle is probably a better choice. He's my logic guy, who sees Latin translation as a puzzle where he has to make all the grammar agree. What the translation actually says doesn't bother him to much. Memorising a bunch of vocabulary is likely to take away some of the pleasure he gets from Latin. Now, DD 8, she might be a good one for Wheelock's in a couple year. Oh, and Bill, thanks for the companion reccomendation. I'll take a look at it.
  12. Just when I think Henle is the way to go, you make me think maybe Wheelock's is possible after all. :glare::D How much time do you spend on Latin per day/week? DS 10 definitely couldn't do one chapter each week, but I'm curious about how long it takes you.
  13. Thanks again, Wapiti. I was trying to find samples of Henle earlier today, and never thought of looking on Google Books. :rolleyes: That sample is exactly what I need though. I did a search on Henle and Wheelock's and the jist seemed to be that Henle is fairly similar to Wheelock's, but lighter. In other words, perfect for younger children! DS 10 knows the first two declensions, as well as the first two conjugations and sum in the present, imperfect, and future, so I think he'd be okay if we went slowly through Henle.
  14. What declensions does he know so far? On of the tricky things is that in the first declension the genitive ending -ae is the same in the dat. sg., and nom and voc. pl. In the 2nd dec. the genitive ends -i, same as the nom. and voc. pl.. Some 3rd. dec. nouns look end in -is in the nom., voc., and gen.. It can be confusing! Make sure your DS really knows his forms. Then, when he comes to a sentence with a noun that could be one of multiple cases, have him translate the noun in all the possible ways. For instance, if the noun is "feminae" it could mean "women", " of the woman", or "to the woman". Almost 100% of the time only one translation will be correct. Hopefully, after doing this a few time he'll start to get more comfortable with this and will be able to identify the genitive faster.
  15. DDs 13 and 15 are both doing three or four foreign languages, depending on what you consider foreign. DH is francophone and the girls are fairly fluent in French, but it's not their mother tongue. They are also studying Latin, Attic Greek, and either Norwegian (DD 13) or Icelandic (DD 15). Learning several languages is certainly possible, it just takes time. Our school days are long, in part because of all those languages. I've told both DDs that if they want to drop a language I will probably let them, but so far they enjoy all of them too much. :)
  16. What exactly is he having trouble with? Does he understand the idea of the genitive? Or does he have trouble identifying it? Here are a few links that might be helpful: http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Genitive More complex uses of the genitive (he may not be at this level yet: http://www.csun.edu/~hcfll004/genitive.html
  17. My children have the same goal. Virigl *shrug*, Harry Potter :w00t:.
  18. So it seems that, yes, it would be too much. Bumping in case anyone else has ideas. :)
  19. Thanks Wapiti and Halcyon. How does Henle compare to Wheelock in terms of translation? Are there many original sentences or is it primarily "made up"?
  20. :iagree: I loved reading both The Book Theif and The Life of Pi. Wonderful writing, great ideas, I could see them becoming modern classics. But as substitutions to the great books? That seems rather strange. Western culture is not based on the works of Zusak and Martel in the way it's based on Homer and Shakespeare. I think the booklist and course are very intriguing, I just find the idea of a great books substitute rather contrary to the very idea of the great books.
