  1. I'm guessing this doesn't exist, but is there a list of what is normally taught in high school bio, chem, and physics? I'm lightening DD 15's science courses in order for her to focus on her other areas of study and would like to make sure we've covered what we need to.
  2. Do you know of any good high school level science textbooks in French? I'm looking for something to use with DD 13 next year. She's not a science person at all, so something that is fairly easy would be best. Merci beaucoup.
  3. Misses: Athenaze Greek -- Not exactly a miss because DD 13 actually quite liked the text; she just wants to learn Norwegian instead of Greek. DD 15's science curriculum (Campbell Biology, Chang Chemistry, Giancoli Physics) -- Once again, the books themselves are great, but DD doesn't have the interest nor the time to devote to them. Hits: BFSU -- Can't express how happy I am with this. I love, love, LOVE it. The perfect springboard for our interest led science studies. SOTW -- As always. :) Défi Math -- Watching DD 8, who's never been very keen on math, happily doing math with DH in French makes me smile everytime.
  4. I just use the plastic bags from store bought fruits and veggies. Simple and effective. :)
  5. Yep, we have our share of duds. :) So there are some parishes (maybe the blogger attends such a parish) that might teach hatred to homosexuals. But as far as official RCC teaching goes, hatred and bigotry are not what is taught.
  6. :iagree: As a Catholic it really saddens me when I see such hatred from fellow Catholics. That is not what the Church teachs.
  7. Loving this thread. TeA bOOks t-shirts?! What have I missed? :)
  8. Same with me. :) I ordered the book a couple days ago so it will be at least a few weeks before we start. I'm very interested to hear how everyone else finds it. :lurk5:
  9. I didn't see a "no gifts at all" option. My extended family had discussion about gift giving several years ago and everyone agreed not to give gifts at birthdays (except perhaps for some of the more significant years) and Christmas. I usually make charitable donations in my parents', MIL's, and siblings' names at Christmas.
  10. The British edition is only available as an e-book so that's what I have. The e-book is fine, but I prefer traditional books and would buy the regular book if it was available.
  11. There was a lengthy discussion about that here on the forums. The article turned out to be a hoax. ETA: Sorry, I didn't see Mothersweets post linking the same thread. :iagree::lol:
  12. I love SW. :) When we started homeschooling DD used Spelling Workout. She's a fairly natural speller, memorises things easily, and found SWO to be a waste of time. Switching to SW was the best spelling decision I ever made. :) Both my natural spellers (I've got one who's finished SW and one just starting) and children who struggle more with spelling (one finished, one part way through) have found the dictation passages very enjoyable. The programme is very flexible, so we're able to jump around between levels without a problem. While spelling rules are not explicitly taught, they can still be learnt. For instance, while learning the word "notion" I might ask DC, "Can you think of any other words which end '-tion'?" Sometimes my kids have pointed out spelling rules themselves which is really great. Another thing I love about SW, although it's probably not an issue, is that there is a British version. As you can probably tell from this post, I use British spellings and have no intention of changing. :D If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
  13. SB grates on my nerves. I think the kids have seen a few episodes at their cousins' house. We don't have cable so whether or not to allow it at home isn't an issue.
  14. We eat our "family meals", breakfast and dinner, at the dinning room table. Lunch is usually a help yourself affair here, but we generally still eat at the dinning room table. We have a small table in the kitchen where kids can work, play, do crafts, etc. while I'm cooking and my kids will sometimes have lunch there.
  15. I was at home doing reading to DDs who were five and three at the time. Suddenly, one of our neighbours was banging on the door and shouting something about, "NYC... my son... attack... TV..." I didn't have TV so I waddled (I was just days away from giving birth to DS) over to her house. We were just in time to see the second plane hit. I spent the rest of the day trying to keep DDs away from the TV while watching it myself, and trying to console my neighbour whose son lived in NYC (he was not injured).
  16. I've been in similar situations with my daughter; very scary. :grouphug:
  17. Me too. While there are many things I love and appreciate about the 21st century, fashion isn't one of them.
