  1. Hmmmm. Flora and Muse in CityCenter. It's quaint (the good quaint, not the condescending kind). Straits, also. It's in Hotel Sorella. There's a lot of things in CityCentre, but we've not made it through them yet:tongue_smilie: Brennan's. Branch Water Tavern. Feast. We normally go eat for Happy Hour (it allows us to try nice places without paying too much). I love Shearn's in Galveston. Chef Urs is phenomenal. Jasper's in the Woodlands (I've never been to this one, but the one in Austin I love so much.) I read this daily. Houston Press Eating Our Words
  2. In Bruges is my favorite quotable movie, but I could only think of a couple ones I could actually in good conscience quote here. :tongue_smilie: Ken: "Two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home." Harry: "I'm sorry for calling you an inanimate object. I was upset."
  3. We are spreading this out over the year, but yes this could easily be done in 8 weeks. We're also doing Painless American Government (dd loves the format so much that we have all the Painless books).
  4. We read Black Horses for the King and The Search for King Arthur before TOaFK. After reading TOaFK (and calling it one of her favorites), she read several more books/series. Merchant's King Arthur and His Knights was a favorite as well as James Riordan's Tales of King Arthur. Nothing touched TOaFK. For your 5th grader, you could read the first book in TOaFK. Since you have Picard, try it out. I think that one would be just fine. There's a lot of King Arthur stuff out there and we collected a shelf full last year. As for the Duke Study, we didn't get to it as much as I'd have liked to. We did so much discussing that the questions seemed to be redundant or unnecessary. If we hadn't loved the book so much, I may have been able to utilize it better. :tongue_smilie:
  5. I have this. I like it just fine. You do need a tamper, but since I always misplace mine, I use the bottoms of spice jars and that seems to do okay. It will take a few times to get the amount down, but it's not hard. I make me a double a few times a week. As for the espresso itself, try a few and see which he likes. I've used Starbucks, Ikea, Cafe Bustelo, and various local places. Cafe Bustelo is surprisingly good for the price. I'm not terribly particular, though. :001_smile:
  6. If you click on the 'mct' or 'michael clay thompson' tags at the bottom of the page, you'll get most of the past threads. The former has the most threads.
  7. Wait. So, y'all are saying that God may not hate the Cowboys? :D
  8. I've used Dropbox in the past, but now I use Google Music and on occasion, Amazon Cloud. These have great apps that link up with your Google or Amazon accts. ETA: Another is Spotify. It's a streaming service (like Pandora) rather than using your own music. It's free to put on your desktop, but $10 a month to put on your phone.
  9. Mike Judge is the guy behind King of the Hill. He also did Beavis and Butthead, Office Space, and Idiocracy (two of my dh's favorite movies). King of the Hill is probably dh's favorite show of all time. I remember at one point Peggy found out what everyone knew about Nancy and John Redcorn and was about to tell Dale, but she saw a scene between Joseph and Dale. I remember at one point Dale believed that Nancy was impregnated by aliens.
  10. Honestly, I think snooping around etsy would be your best bet. A couple things: Does she enjoy memes? These are cool and vegan. I think everything in that shop is vegan actually. And way cute. I know it's not a large purchase, but the intertubes, and some other things on the site in a traincase with vegan brushes would be quite big. Only if your dd is interested in something like that, though. My dd has quite a collection of various indie brands, but she also loves theatrical cosmetics. Also, this. Not big, but neat, especially with nice expensive pencils.
  11. I've got the first 2 books. The books are set up by units, so it's easy to pick and choose what units to do. I plan on getting the other 3 by the summer and plan the units/books in what ever order I choose. We're on our 3rd unit for the school year (we started it late). A unit lasts 4 weeks (though truthfully Unit 1, short stories, took 2 weeks and Unit 2, Verne, took 3. We're doing Jane Eyre now and it will take up all 4 weeks). It gives explicit directions for each week and sample essays/assignments in the back. You research the author, read context essays, watch videos, and write responses. It assumes that you can write an essay, but encourages having a writing guide. We use Essay Voyage and Writing for College. We also have How to Read a Book (recommended in EiL), but we haven't cracked it yet. I like it because it takes some of the burden off of me to plan an in depth study of a novel and I liked the novels chosen. DD likes it because the instructions are explicit while being short and sweet. It gets done.
  12. I was actually considering just going when I posted, but it's 30F and I thought I'd try the boards first. :D
  13. About a year ago, I saw a "wooden" color wheel puzzle at Wal-mart. I wanted it, but it had been mangled and I couldn't find another. Fast forward to now, I'm wondering if anyone has seen this at their Wal-mart recently. I've called a few and well, they're not very helpful. I could just go, but I really dislike going to Wal-mart during the holidays and would rather avoid it, but I'd send DH there to grab this puzzle if people have seen it at their stores. Anyone seen it?
  14. Make that two words. Bint and besom. I'm wondering what words I can deduce. Like feculent (I thought surely I was wrong about that one.) Yeah. I can't let my 13 yo get a hold of this list. They will be dirty words once she gets done with them. Her favorite Latin word is 'facit'.
  15. I agree with Joanne. Does she have any siblings she can sleep with? Does she sleep in a separate room or in the room with you and your dh? If no siblings and she sleeps in her own room by herself, then see if she'd be happy with making her own space in your room. My dd, who was 4 at the time, was fine with that. DH worked odd hours, so she still crawled in bed with me a lot. I think we forget sometimes that we have someone to sleep with, but small children are expected to sleep alone. I would never make a child sleep alone. I don't like to sleep alone. It's not about creating monsters or my 13 yo would be horrid. I would be horrid. My most spirited child coughwretchedcough was out of my bed at 1.5 years and my room at 4. All of her own choosing. She sleeps with her sister now. If she already has a bed in your room and she wants to sleep with you still, you can offer to hold hands (I have fond memories of doing this with my grandmother when I was too big to sleep in the bed with her and my grandfather) or find another way to make her excited about her space. Decals for the wall, special pillow/blanket, etc. For my oldest we ended up just buying a larger bed. :tongue_smilie:
  16. i think my soup is pretty good (as does DH, which is saying something considering he doesn't usually think soup can be a meal) and it's very simple since I usually only make it when I'm sick, or there's a cold-front and I'm baking a lot and need a simple dinner. I'd use homemade stock, but I never have any in the freezer when I want to make this. Anyway: small sweet onion butter carton of chicken stock leftover rotisserie (or any chicken really) salt lemongrass (I use the spice form) skinny egg noodles I caramelize the onion in butter after slicing into skinny rings. This takes for.ev.er. But they are so good that I could eat them on ice cream. After that, throw the chicken, onions, and stock in a big pot, double the recipe if you want and bring it to a boil (I'm impatient at this point and usually don't wait for it to boil), and put in the noodles. Salt to taste and I add several large pinches of lemongrass. It may be about a tsp's worth, but I can usually tell by how much I see floating in there and by taste. Honestly though, it's the onion and the lemongrass that gives it such great flavor. I'm sure you could add whatever else you wanted to this and it would still be good as long as you kept in those two things.
  17. Mine is usually 95-105/65-75. The only thing that looks funny to me is the second number looks a little higher than you'd normally see with a first number that low...but honestly I don't know if that matters and if it does, what it means. I'd stop at a Walgreens or another drugstore (I think even Walmart and Target) and check it again. Do you know what your BP is usually?
  18. :iagree: Yes. I love David Tennant and Catherine Tate together.
  19. My first thought was: "Wow. That should take care of any critter problem you have." Second thought: "Wait. How did you get a dragon?!" I might be drinking.
  20. I'm thinking the 11oz would just be a really crappy cup of coffee.
