  1. No experience with either of those, but we like Novare Science for rigor and Christian outlook. www.classicalacademicpress.com (I seem to be recommending Novare in every thread this evening! 😁)
  2. Novare Science is another option for a rigorous, Christian science curriculum. DH is a scientist and we find Novare to be thorough and faith-affirming without being simplistic or preachy.
  3. DS is enjoying the BJU Press Economics curriculum this semester. We’ve never used their materials, but I picked up an old edition (1999!!) at a thrift store and for the nuts and bolts of Econ. it’s been great. ETA: No f bombs. 😂
  4. Hoping to sow some Swiss Chard and Hakurei turnips soon. The tomato seedlings are looking pretty good, but I'm not really sure which variety is which since the cat dumped the flat over and they may have gotten mixed up. I'm excited about dwarf sunflowers this year.
  5. FYI Etsy sellers can make a custom embosser with your logo. Ours came in the mail this week and I’m excited to emboss a gold foil sticker for DS’s diploma!
  6. As the wife of a former college professor, I strongly dislike sites like RMP for the reasons Ummlbrahim mentioned. If a professor has high standards and grades students accordingly, he/she ends up with terrible reviews from disgruntled students. (I never searched DH on these sites, but some of his end-of-semester evaluations were painful — and correlated to the grade a student earned). Please teach your students how to seek help when they are struggling with a professor’s method or style and how to leave constructive and civil feedback for professors. ❤️
  7. 👍 Hoping to use our ASC gift card soon! For those not close to Staunton, you might look into BlackfriarsTV (pandemic-initiated broadcasts by the aforementioned Shakespeare group).
  8. If you’re anywhere near Staunton, VA, the Blackfriars will be performing Macbeth in May! https://americanshakespearecenter.com
  9. This problem is an old joke: What’s the difference between public school and homeschool? In homeschool, you finish the book! (‘Cause Mama paid good money for that book!) 😁 I have had similar issues with high school science textbooks. We pick and choose topics, or just see how far we get and stop at the end of the year. Science professor DH is fine with these approaches.
  10. So I called admissions offices today. Two of them (private; very selective universities) requested the cc transcript right away. One university (state, not selective) said it wasn't needed unless DS is accepted and enrolls. 🙂
  11. Sounds like controlling food has become a way of controlling and ordering life when there are lots of changes going on. Agreeing with Carol in Cal. that a trip to the store makes for a nice outing and change of scenery. Sorry for all the frustrations OP!
  12. Some DE transcripts can’t be submitted with the application because the student hasn’t completed the courses yet. I don’t recall being asked for these on the Common App. When do colleges expect to receive DE transcripts?
  13. What you have sounds good. Maybe add some pee pads if the kitten is not yet litter trained and plan to keep him/her in a room with an easily washable floor. (Our experience may have been unusual due to kitten recovering from getting hit by a car 😪, but keeping her in the kitchen for a while saved a lot of cleanup). Everything is a toy to a kitten, so you could hold off on buying toys. Our cat's favorite: half a plastic Easter egg to bat around. Enjoy your new baby!
  14. Correction: Online registration for the Schole' honors chemistry class has been open for a while. Today is the last day for the earlybird discount!
  15. You could look into Novare Chemistry for Accelerated Students at www.classicalacademicpress.com They also have an online honors chemistry class; registration just opened. 😊
  16. Aerus Electrolux family here. They've lasted forever (we still use one of my grandmother's which has skids instead of wheels!). The newer versions are also high quality. ETA: Ebay provided our current refurbished vacuum for a lower price than new. It's been doing great for >10yrs. I love that there are people who can work on these machines if something does go wrong.
  17. Does anyone have a child who has attended pre-med camp? I'm all ears, especially for camps that will be happening this year.
  18. I use a garden shovel, since a fully-loaded snow shovel is too heavy for me to lift anyway. 🙂
  19. I'm hoping (but not very hopeful) for overnight camp this year. My sister is the program director for our church camp and says they are waiting to hear from the state (ie the health dept. which licenses them) before hiring staff and planning the summer. Hard times for camps . . . We do plan to have "cousin camp" again this summer! We host eight cousins (incl. our kids) for a few days of hanging out and doing camp-like activities (cool crafts, hiking, tenting in the backyard). The age range is 4-17, but they had a great time together last summer. (This is our Christmas gift to the families).
  20. Can’t say much other than my mom has droopy eyelids (and I’m probably headed there, too). You might look into whether your insurance will cover corrective surgery. The surgery is cosmetic, but also considered necessary (for driving, etc), so some insurance co.s will cover.
  21. This sounds like a great opportunity! And so close to your house! The community garden plot we had in the early 2000s was larger (and fee was higher), but I really enjoyed having the space and meeting fellow gardeners on occasion. One other thing to check on (besides critters and theft) is the safety of the area. Would you feel comfortable working alone at the garden? Our plot was near a major road, but not visible from the road and a little secluded. I was working in the garden alone one morning when a Large, black SUV with tinted windows pulled in next to our plot. License plate: NAZGUL. 🤣 The driver turned out to be a nice guy, but I was a little nervous at first.
  22. We have used/are using LOF for high school math, but DS switched to comm. college for calculus (and did well with his LOF background). That said, for other hs math classes, I have assigned problem sets from other curricula to compare a student's progress. Khan Academy would be another (free, easily accessible) option. Just make sure that you are testing what you intend to test, ie, that the topics line up and the student isn't being asked to solve something they haven't yet encountered in LOF.
  23. It's a way for colleges to request transcripts of tax forms, W-2s, etc to put together financial aid packages. We received one through the College Board after filling out a CSS profile for the requesting college. I've seen opinions that a request means the college is strongly considering the student's admissions application; others say this is not the case. I'm wondering whether people on this board have received IDOC requests, and were (or were not) offered admission.
  24. . . . do IDOC requests correlate with acceptance letters? I've seen other discussions of this and wondered what people on this board have experienced. UPDATE: In our experience, there is no correlation. We received an IDOC request from one of two CSS schools where DS applied. He was denied at the requesting and non-requesting schools. (No surprise as we weren’t expecting an offer from either). Just thought we’d add a little info to the collective wisdom. 🙂
