  1. Yup. They need to hire a babysitter for 5-6 hours. Others gave good choices. You need to not be an unpaid babysitter. You need to be grandma. They are treating you like the former and your DIL's sense of entitlement is not endearing.
  2. I have only graduated two kids so far. The eldest, now a junior math major on a full scholarship, did just one AP class (no test)-- AP Calc. She had zero interest in taking the test and finding a location for her to test would have been tough. My second took zero AP classes but is starting college with 20 credits. She didn't start taking DE until the summer before her senior year because she wasn't ready before that. She is not a superstar student academically but tries hard. My third kid is starting her sophomore year in high school. No idea what her transcript will look like in three years but hoghly unlikely it will be full of APs.
  3. Tried to get through MP's Traditional Logic (no DVDs) with dd#1 & failed about halfway. Sooooo snoozy. Never tried DoD even though I've used Art of Argument three times so far. I think Dd#1 (my math major) would have preferred the more symbolic logic of Canon Press. Never tried again after MP though.
  4. Already have a friend who is saving us a spot in her backyard. :)
  5. A starter home here can be had here for $40-50k. That's usually a 2 Bdrm, 1 bath but could be different/more depending on condition. That is achievable for a single person on a teacher salary or two people on full time fast food jobs.
  6. I much prefer the Us mentioned in the article that reach out to each studrnt individually rather than just blanket drop them. Speaking as a mom whose new freshman has been attempting to keep up with the multiple email "mandatory" surveys and online trainings being sent from her new college to various email addresses -- some of which haven't worked without multiple tech support requests, I appreciate someone reaching out to help before just dropping them.
  7. Over an hour away in multiple directions but you could live closer if your job allowed. One of my sister's college professors asserted in the mid-90s that it would be virtually impossible for those college students to own their own houses. She disagreed with him. Like many of us, she owns her own house now (or at least has equity in it). It won't be NYC, but there is culture in flyover states. Maybe not political agreement with your values though...
  8. God Bless them & I hope for safe evacuation for many more.
  9. I never heard anyone in real life use "on fleek" but that was apparently a thing for awhile. Not sure any of these except "sus" and "stan" were picked up in every day (kid) slang. My kids use "sus" a lot. From Bustle in 2017: "According to Pop Sugar, snatched is a new slang term used to describe anything that looks really good. Basically, it's the new on fleek because, on fleek is so over. Pop Sugar also listed several other slang words that are working their way into everyday conversations. And, if you have major FOMO, these new slang terms terms are: Sus (sketchy or shady), boots (basically this can be used the same as AF; instead of saying "I'm tired AF," you can say "I'm tired boots"), Stan (hardcore fan, which stems from the Eminem song Stan about an over-the-top fan), and OTP (one true pairing, kind of like bae)." And if you want something more recent but that you've actually heard of many of them, here are 35 terms from Family Education that all parents should know.
  10. My DH jumps on the new slang so I've known this meaning for awhile. I think he learned it at work.
  11. @Loesje22000Yay!! She got in!! Thanks for the update. So happy for you both!
  12. School starts today for one kid & Monday for the other. The "requested" mask usage at Monday's start has moved to required for the first two weeks. They've already had 5 or 6 reported cases on campus & move in for the non-athletes doesn't start until tomorrow. This is a very small on-campus community (under 2,000 students and I'd say half or more of those are all online).
  13. @FarrarI'm not fond of it & thus don't use it. But I know others think it is great & it fits their needs well, so I'm glad we can all use the layout we prefer (most of the time).
  14. My mom felt this way about me needing to be on my own after graduation, but it was college graduation she was referring to. She didn't trust that I was ready or that I already knew myself and what I wanted. I hope I trust my kids more than she thought of me. Of course, she wanted all of us kids to wait until we were 35 to get married. SMH.
  15. Was it this one? "Motorcycle guy" is Trace Adkins (country singer). Soothing voice. Never seen the movie. Thought he'd go in a different direction in that speech, but it was good.
  16. Kids start "dating" at 11 or 12 around here. Or before. But my kids don't run in those circles. So, your finessed statement would be, "I think people who are striving to remain chaste before marriage should not date until they are old enough to be capable of supporting one's self." Interesting idea. Very unlikely to gain traction in large numbers due to human nature. But a noble thought.
  17. Well, technically, these kids are old enough to marry, yes? So this statement might need a little more finessing. I mean, 18 is the legal marriage age (without need for parental consent) in most states in the US. And based on that thread here the other day about trying out partners sexually pre-marriage, the goal of chastity-until-marriage certainly isn't held by many parents of this board for their children. Anyway, I live in the rural farm area of flyover country. We do see some marriage right out of high school but most kids that stick around here just shack up and/or have kids.
  18. This is new territory for me. We are not tall people--just average. I'm 5'6 & DH is 5'10". But my just-turned 14 yr old is 5'10" already & I was told by 2 medical professionals that he's far from done growing (2" in the first 5 months of this year, 7" in the year and a half prior to that). I haven't done anything different for him than with my dds when they were growth spurting but each one of those were different (and they are all 5'7" and shorter). So, I'm following along.
  19. So, Teenage Boy A, let's call him Ace is from State A. Teenage Boy B, call him Bill, is from State B. They are both counselors at Boy Scout Camp in State C. Ace sees Bill writing a letter & asks him about it. Bill explains he's writing to a friend who's a girl who lives in State D. Ace replies that he knows exactly two girls who live in State D -- an ex-gf & her college roommate. Bill shows Ace a picture of the girl. That girl is Ace's ex-gf's college roommate. That was me. Small world
  20. Y'all made me check. My usual mug is 12 oz but I drink instant coffee and I just realized the instructions say one tsp/6 oz. Um. I only use 1 tsp in 12 oz. Any more & it is too bitter. So, I guess I have a half-strength 12 oz drink. I weaned off the 2-3 Tbs of sugar I add to it last year but added creamer so maybe it is a wash... I'm swapping to decaf now. Hope to go caffeine free in 2022.
  21. Yes. The Northeast and Pacific regions have lower vaccine hesitancy than the Midwest, South, & Mountain regions according to the survey. I've simplified the data. But this is percent of vaccine hesitancy by US Region in May (from the survey,): Midwest 18.1% South 19.2% Pacific. 12.1% Mountain. 17.9% Northeast. 12.6% Territories 12.0% https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.07.20.21260795v1.full.pdf+html
  22. Lol @wilrunner. My college girl is always looking for an envelope & a stamp! She'll send out a request at some odd hour of the night to her friends to see if they have one. Dd#2 just got done with her graduation thank you notes and 80% of those were better off mailed. The local post office only had boring stamps so I ordered fun ones & might gone overboard. I got some Star Wars ones & a few other types...
  23. Well, for once I was ahead of the curve. I should have enough to mail Christmas cards...
  24. I wish dd#1's school had good student health. They won't even administer allergy shots. And this is a school with a nursing college!! Nope. Hockey is not a thing at UAH anymore. Canceled. Long story, but gone. Obviously YMMV. Many parents reported finding the clorox wipes unopened when they went to move their kid out when covid caused schools to shut down in 2020. Great because they were in short supply then, but sad that their kids never once used the cleaning supplies they sent. So know thy student when sending cleaning supplies!
