  1. So, maybe I read it wrong, but they just submitted their data. They haven't submitted the paperwork for the EUA yet. That is supposed to come in a week or two. ETA: From the article: "...said they would make a formal request with U.S. regulators for emergency use in the coming weeks."
  2. I think there are still some people don't know it is free and that you don't have to show an insurance card either. I don't know how many that accounts for, but yes. There are some.
  3. I've been roasted for this before, but my kid's transcript had all As by outside providers and great test scores (97-99%), but some B & B+ grades from me. Kid just wouldn't work for Mom like she would for someone else. So, it would have been great if they ignored my grades. I'm sure they didn't.
  4. @kristin0713 I'm glad to hear things are being addressed. I hope it was just beginning hiccups! Re: conversation group Probably what would be best is to have the beginners bring the current or previous vocab topic to the agreed upon zoom session. The further along German convo partners can facilitate a discussion around that topic. First one would probably be intros (in German) and maybe just conversation practice. I'll PM you with contact info fir my German kid. @SusanC Ask your German speakers if they are interested. Anyone else's kids -- high school or college who want to join -- speak up! The kids will have to agree on a day/time & it probably won't work for everyone, but we'll let them set something up.
  5. There was a poster (creekland) here whose youngest went to Eckerd. If I remember, he had a rough first semester because all he could find were hard core party kids. I think it got vetter second semester, and he found some friends his sophomore year. That's the only one I remember & creekland doesn't post here anymore. Maybe someone else has had a kid geaduate more recently? Here are a few threads I found. Kid who loves biology--what majors to consider Eckerd College (2013 thread) Trip Report Eckerd College (2014)
  6. Another person came forward saying she gave BL a ride on the 27th, presumably after the first people let him out.
  7. I'd be tempted to ask the school to allow a panel of people to speak for mental health week. A health care worker, a parent who has had a child die, etc could briefly explain their situation/trauma & how they are attempting to cope, and then they could answer the middle school kids' questions.
  8. Cleats. But they can't be metal cleats at his age. We went to a specialized sports store in The Big City. They had exactly one pair of cleats that was within a half-size of what he needed. We took them. Nothing else bigger than that size. They could have ordered the size, but didn't have time before practice started.
  9. My son has grown 4"+ in each of the last two years. His voice deepened & stabilized over a year ago -- after dd#1 left to go back to college for Christmas & before we saw her again at the end of last summer. He has mustache peach fuzz but not beard growth so far. He temporarily dislocated his kneecap this summer playing baseball & had x-rays to check for damage. The orthopedic person said his growth plates are still "wide open" and she anticipates at least another 4" of growth. Our pediatrician independently opined he has awhile to go (4-5"). I have not noticed a huge food uptake or increased need for sleep. He outgrows his pants quickly and I had significant issues finding him shoes that fit for baseball.
  10. I caught up on this thread just now & was going to say something to this but with the way things went in the last page, I won't. You have brought up a really good point. I do think male vs female response is a big part of the difference in the reaction to all of this (lockdowns, mandates, disease risk, fear). As a female, I've generally learned to be nice, defer to men/people in power, acquiesce, and go along. Play according to the rules. Don't be a b*/ch. Shut up when told to do so. Men don't necessarily get the same message growing up, IMO. They definitely, as a group, don't seem to follow those same ideas women do. Could it be, @Melissa Louise, that the reasons nurses, child care workers, teachers, etc. are going along with the mandates and not speaking up is partially gender- (or is now sex? I can't follow the differentiation in terminology that is now required) related-conditioning?
  11. My mom forced me to practice my clarinet in the garage the one year I had it. Years later, my little brother was allowed to play his trumpet in the house. Was I that bad or had she just given up by then? I like to think it was the latter.
  12. @popmom Where are you seeing the footage? @Melissa LouiseI empathize with those who are sick of lockdowns -- those who just want to do whatever they are being told will get them released & those who are expressing their upset through praceful protest. I'm very much against violence -- BLM or any in this protest.
  13. Pulled from Covid thread: On 9/20/2021 at 9:50 PM,@bookbard said: "Don't quite understand what is happening with Victoria and construction. Sounds like a small group of antivaxers are causing trouble. Sad for the rest of them." I saw some screen shots from a live stream. Sure didn't look like a small group. From what I read, the people were not anti-vax as much as anti-mandate. But the media accounts, the few that I can find, didn't seem to match what the people watching the live stream saw. It sounds like there is zero patience with the protesters on the part of the government and that their union bosses are disavowing them completely. Anyone on the ground there who can give an account?
  14. Child care providers also do this.
  15. When my dd#1 signed up for Russian at CLRC, the class had been listed as an "Intro to" class, not as Russian 1. There was a teacher switch before the school year started. The teacher was faced with a big class (for CLRC) ranging from kids who had never taken any foreign language to adults who had lived in Russia. The class was either going way too slow or immensely too fast. With the teacher change, what was supposed to be two hours per week of homework (prior teacher) was two hours per night (new teacher) at the beginning. Emails to the teacher didn't really get anywhere just because she didn't understand the huuuge difference between the different students. Emails to Anne Van Fossen got almost immediate results. The class was still too difficult for some students & definitely became a Russian 1 class, but it no longer took two hours of work every night for my kid. And yes, she's minoring in Russian in college.
  16. I know a kid who chose to withdraw from college (on an almost full ride scholarahip) because he refused to wear a mask inside the classrooms (which is the only place they really require them on this campus). I'm sad because of the ramifications of having that one semester transcript filled with Ws. But his mom is proud of him and supportive of whatever his next step in life is. I probably would have told my kid to suck it up. Quite a bit of the staff & students wear their masks under their noses...
  17. I am pro-vaccine. I am also pro-science. To my knowledge, there is no accomodation for those who currently have high antibody levels due to a very recent infection or who would only need one dose of an mRNA vaccine to boost them to great (even greater than 2 doses) antibody levels because of a previous infection. To me, this is ignoring the science. For those who don't know my stance, I am for allowing (adult) people to make their own decision with regard to vaccines -- including those required for a potential job -- and to allow them to accept the consequences of those decisions. Having a job suddenly require something new -- whether a new vaccine, a new skill certificate, or a new weight-lifting requirement-- should allow a grandfathering of current employees in my opinion.
  18. *whispers* I haven't read it yet. I try to read the links before posting but didn't this time so I couldn't comment on the actual content. I don't know if this relates, but I have definitely seen a change in the relation of cases/hospitalizayions/deaths on the charts from last summer to this summer. I assumed most of the affect was prior infections & vaccinations leading to less hospitalizations & less death. Actually, the option to test instead of vaccinate is now gone for federal workers even if you telework. https://federalnewsnetwork.com/workforce/2021/09/under-recent-executive-order-federal-employees-must-now-show-proof-of-vaccination/ "Federal employees must now show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, the Biden administration said Thursday, the latest change in the White House’s evolving policy for the workforce. The vaccination requirement applies to all executive branch employees, including those who are currently teleworking, the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force said Thursday in new guidance detailing how agencies should implement the president’s recent executive order. “Employees who are on maximum telework or working remotely are not excused from this requirement, including because employees working offsite may interact with the public as part of their duties and agencies may need to recall employees who are on maximum telework or working remotely,” the guidance reads."
  19. Weird. OP is still posting in the thread. It is weird though that people are trying to debunk an argument that I didn't see made in this thread. I didn't see anyone claim there was a constitutional right to be a nurse. Or that anyone in this thread it was immoral to tell someone a job requires a medical procedure -- only that it was immoral to coerce someone into a medical procedure. The fact that thousands of people are being faced with accepting a medical procedure that was not previously required as a condition for employment is, IMO, not immoral but it does suck for those who do not wish to get that procedure but who want to keep their current job. Lots about this pandemic sucks, including the hundreds of thousands of deaths. Job loss sucks, too.
  20. Well, I think the mention wasn't, "gosh, these poor nurses are out of a job" but "if these nurses/staff hadn't been fired, there would be more capacity." Except the person mentioning it actually didn't make this argument but said the response in their area was something along the latter's line. I will say that the hospital system in Big City near be admitted they are already short of staff for non-pandemic times and that their vaccine mandate will make that situation worse. The spokesman clearly stated they would rather be short of vaccinated staff and reduce the number of patients they can care for than have some of their staff unvaccinated because those staff might also get sick and they both care about them getting sick and would still be short of staff during that illness. So, in my area, there was a shortage of nurses & other staff before Covid and that shortage will only get worse. (There was a consolidation of hospitals a few years ago when quite a few physicians, nurses, volunteers, and staff left the hospital system and area.) I have no idea if the number of listed available ICU beds has changed recently, but at least one nurse who normally does not work in ICU (and who expressed concern that she did not feel comfortable with the assignment) was pressed into working ICU. Deaths as a percentage of population in my state are still low compared to other US states. But we do run full on hospital space (presumably, in part, due to staffing) occasionally.
  21. Well, you should be seeing action / change soon because Anne Van Fossen is a gem (assuming Anne is the one you contacted). Let me know if she wants to try something even once. :)
  22. I would be emailing the head of the program if there was one after all those things combined. (This isn't CLRC is it? I know they have a new teacher.) If your dd wants to do an occasional German convo on Zoom, I bet we have a few Hive kids who could do it. My (not -that-great by her own admission) German-speaker is in college but might be able to make it to a once per week Zoom of other homeschooled (or former homeschooled) kids. I know there are others in high school or college who studied German or who are studying German. I can tag the ones I remember if you want.
