  1. Since many of us have said how much we like Fears, here is a free lecture at Teaching Company about JFK.
  2. Solid financial plan, no timeline and no set place. We both like mountains and would prefer a more "four seasons" climate (we're in TX now - no family here, just the job ;)) We have moved around a lot with dh's job and have friends scattered all over the world so I have no doubt we would find friends wherever we landed. DH isn't the type to chase around a little white ball and we both are heavily involved in service here so I feel sure that would play into our decision. And as others have mentioned, if grandbabies are in the picture, all bets are off - we have never lived near our parents during our own parenting stage, and I would love to be close enough geographically to be more involved in their lives.
  3. We haven't lived there in a long time, but I was going to suggest the Varsity (if you have a cast iron stomach!) and Mary Mac's. Sunflower Cafe is good for organic/vegetarian. Buckhead Diner for American fare.
  4. My snarky reply is whatever matches her current nose ring ;) She's pretty tiny and wears girls' size 14. She's given up dying her hair because of their organic lifestyle, otherwise she would still be mistaken as a pd (pastor's daughter) rather than a pw.
  5. Here. Not sure how Jane Austen would feel being compared to Trekkies :)
  6. Thank you so much Jane! "we're messin' with cow poop" "Coopus Maximus" "We're masochists, a little bit" Her Ted Talk is one of my favorites. I can't wait to see the movie!
  7. DH likes both LL Bean and Lands End. We shop their sales - we get emails from both. LE just had their Friends and Family sale, 30% off everything (including sale items). Closer to Christmas, they'll probably have their 40% sale. Both have free shipping - Bean on everything, and Lands End usually at about the $50 mark.
  8. You also need a policy for the teacher to let you know immediately (via text or email) that the class is cancelled. Maybe you can start contacting the teacher before you leave to ensure the class is still meeting (just kidding. Sort of).
  9. I agree with this - I don't doubt that grade inflation abounds. I would find it more meaningful to compare specific colleges among the various academic years depicted.
  10. While this may be true, I think it is acknowledged by colleges and many don't give credit for it. Depending on your goals for this course, you may want to plan accordingly.
  11. Would it be possible to go ahead and switch now or over the Christmas break? If she prefers tumbling anyway - what is the purpose of continuing with dance till the end of the year? I understand wanting to keep commitments - but what about cutting your losses?
  12. This made me smile. Beauty out of ashes. Hope she has THE BEST birthday ever.
  13. I went to a preview screening of Enders Game last week and sat by the guy who wrote this review - we talked about it afterwards and I think he nailed it. I particularly liked this part of his review -
  14. Hugs to you and your dd. SHAME on those parents for letting their girls cancel. It sounds like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I hope your dd has a fabulous party!! Tell her happy birthday from her WTM aunties.
  15. :hurray:Congratulations! I agree with having your friends coordinate one big happy shower together. I love it when my worlds collide and friends can finally become mutual friends :001_smile:
  16. I agree with this. I would try to find something you like on sale - 6pm has them periodically though this might not be the right time of year.
  17. You as the heir don't generally pay any tax on inherited property, the estate pays federal taxes (maybe - that's where having a good will comes into play). The heir would only pay tax in a few states - PA and NJ are two of them (I can't remember the others). Since you don't live in any US state, I think you wouldn't pay any tax. But you would be wise to consult a tax attorney or accountant to be sure.
  18. I don't know how it works for military moves - we had 3 international corporate moves and they weighed all our stuff before putting it on the boat. That must be really stressful! I hope you get it sorted quickly. I would go with the first house since you'll be home so much. If trying to get landlord #2 to paint is like pulling teeth, you'll be hard pressed to get him to do any more updating. And Naples drivers scare me more than any other place we've been - they pass at such high speeds! :driving:
  19. Thank you!! I don't go to the mall very much - I'll have to check whether we have that store here.
  20. It seems all this wouldn't have happened if your ds had mentioned the family holiday plans during his interview. I understand that he didn't (doesn't) want to speak up for himself. But it has created quite the kerfuffle for your family now.
  21. Lands End has very sturdy tote bags in tons of colors. If you subscribe to their emails, they generally have one day sales on them - a few years ago I got some for about $10 for the teachers at the school where I tutor.
  22. Thank you!! My order only included one sale item so I only saved a little bit - but I got free shipping since I ordered so much ;) I've been meaning to order some Dr. Who things so this was a great reminder. Does anybody know where to buy Dr. Who earrings?
  23. More hugs to you. Go take a bubble bath, read a good book, sip a glass of wine, eat some chocolate, take a long walk, read some Scripture that is meaningful to you....something to take your mind (and your heart) off this woman. She'd like nothing better than to suck all the blood from your heart of gold!!
