  1. I haven't read the article but I agree about not getting a pillow top - I would love to get one with no "up" and "down" side. And we have a set that is about 5 years old but we've never really liked it. I get why there are no returns on mattresses (can you imagine?) but it's too bad you can't camp out in a furniture store for a week or so to really try them.
  2. College Girl send me this link  Spoilers for those who haven't gone forward in time to watch it :) To be honest I didn't know what to think when I dug this up in my backyard at the age of 5. "What's a DVD?" I asked myself. The fact Moffat is STILL able to write and produce the show after now just being a head in a jar is amazing.
  3. I would get on top of her health issues before trying to make long term goals. To curb her antsiness, could she give music lessons or teach a class at your community college, church, library, after school program? And honestly, you never know what could come out of her 2-3 month tour. Some of our favorite musicians started out playing in local pubs and coffee houses. Tell her WTM aunties where she's touring - maybe some of us could spread the word and go see her perform :D
  4. I don't think this had much to do with her being under 21. I think she was naive and made poor choices in her companions and activities.
  5. Here. I'm thrilled for the McKissacks to receive a lifetime achievement award. We love their books at the inner city school where I tutor and sub. And while I haven't read Kate Dicamillo's latest book, I'm excited that she won the Newbery. I watched an interview with her and she just seems like a very nice person. :) I loved "Book Thief" on several levels, so I'm glad its author also won a lifetime achievement award. "A Splash of Red" looks like a lovely book. I'm always interested in discovering new books!

  8. I would suggest trying for something she can do at home - data entry, proofreading, editing, that type of thing.
  9. I lean more toward silly and annoying. I don't think they have enough of a "hook" to make the songs memorable.
  10. At dd's (very small) LAC, parents are invited into the interview about 45 minutes into it, after the student and the interviewer have met one on one. That gives the parents a chance to ask any questions etc. Ironically dd wasn't interested in doing study abroad (having lived overseas several times) but it was more attractive after her campus interviewer described some of their programs and policies.
  11. That's one way to avoid the parents in the interview with the student :)
  12. The Teaching Company - we've returned several sets for a full refund when the lectures weren't what we thought they would be - mostly because we didn't care for the instructor's teaching style. Central Market - a local-ish grocery store As mentioned previously, LLBean, Chickfila and Nordstroms - I found my gynecologist by chatting with the saleslady there.
  13. You're right - she should contact the school. I would call to get an immediate answer (I feel sure they would have a ready answer) but she could also email them. FWIW I heard this asked in several info sessions and the answer was always yes, you could change to ED - I don't know whether they would let her now that the deadline has passed, but the fact that her application was complete before the ED deadline would play in her favor. If she does call and gets an answer, I would request a follow up email confirming it so it's all in writing. Best wishes to your dd! I'm sure she'd love to have a decision before the spring!
  14. that's because he has that same adorable smile. Congratulations to all of you! Hope you have a fabulous day.
  15. This. Check with all the colleges where your student is applying. I remember when dd's LAC came to our hometown, they said you can't "double dip" - you can choose where you want to use them, either high school or college, but not both. I've known of several situations where the student had two different transcripts based on what each college wanted.
  16. I agree about Lands End. Also you might try Appleseeds or Tog Shop - if you go to their website, they are partnered together.
  17. Katie - What if one of us who lives near a Hancock sent you a sample? I totally get wanting to touch the fabric :D
  18. Oh sorry! I didn't even notice the difference. I would talk to Joann's to see whether they could get some for you. The one near me can order just about anything - but it's their largest store so that might make a difference. And YES you must post a picture when you finish!! I think it's very cool that she doesn't want a typical dress but one that fits HER personality :)
  19. Here Joann's has camo satin - do you have a Joann's near you? Or maybe at that price you could just take a chance…..
  20. I've seen lots of them at homeschool conferences. But I've only been to those in a very large city - maybe they attract a more diverse homeschool crowd.
  21. Since retiring from homeschooling nearly 4 years ago, I have increased my time at the inner city school where I tutor - I'm now subbing quite a bit as well. Also dh travels overseas quite a bit for his job, and I've appreciated having the flexibility (and the empty nest) to be able to join him. I particularly enjoyed accompanying him to the UK 3 times while College Girl was studying there last year. I've also enjoyed traveling with girlfriends who are also empty nesters.
  22. Just an FYI - most schools will release decisions BEFORE April 1. This is the time to hunker down on school work, enjoy your student's last semester as a high school student, go on long walks together, read good books together - IOW anything and everything to keep your minds off the fact you won't hear anything for two more months ;)
  23. I had totally forgotten about that forum, though I keep up with a gal I met there whose son went to my dd's college. That was a great forum - small but powerful :D
  24. I hope you hear good news soon! Berry is a lovely campus. I ran a 10K there with friends one November - the trees were breathtaking.
