  1. I'm so sorry. :grouphug: I hope you are "made whole" somewhere very soon. I haven't sold in years, it just got to where it seems buyers want nearly new for nearly nothing.
  2. We've lived in Houston 3 times (dh is with oil). I agree with the advice to select your housing based on where your dh will work. If you can tell us the general area, we can make recommendations based on that. Keep in mind that Houston is the 4th largest in the US. I miss the arts in Houston - the theatre and museums are excellent.
  3. Oh my word! Growing up, I went to church with his parents. Thanks so much for the heads up! The movie looks really fun.
  4. Shawshank Redemption Pride and Prejudice (the BBC 5 hour one) Muppet movies (before Jim Henson died) Toy Story 3 Princess Bride While You Were Sleeping Beauty and the Beast Babette's Feast LOTR Back to the Future To Kill a Mockingbird King's Speech
  5. One entry point might be volunteering. I'm now subbing at the school where I started out tutoring on a volunteer basis.
  6. Yay! We loved our trip to Normandy. My dd (11 at the time) and I walked on the beach and pretended we had arrived via boat ;) Don't miss the Bayeux Tapestry - it's amazing. I'm just curious because we have done 3 international moves but as expats - the company covers temporary housing for about 6 weeks, then we're on our own…. is it similar when you're military? I guess I'm wondering whether your hotel has been on your dime or the military's. Regardless - enjoy Normandy and celebrate FINALLY getting permanent housing :)
  7. I've only island hopped on Hawaiian and it's been about 25 years since I did that. But I had a look at their website - here is a list of meals. Based on this your dss should be fine with no other documents than their passports, as long as they are valid 6 months past your travel date. Your dss should be fine with just carryon luggage - my husband travels overseas for business a lot and prefers to travel that way. :) He doesn't ever get questioned, but if your dss do, it should be fine. They won't be the first to take advantage of lower prices in the US to do some shopping. For your other questions you might ring or email them - here and here are their contact details (NZ is 09 977 2227 during business hours). Safe travels and enjoy your trip!
  8. I don't see any ads either. Maybe you need to reboot your computer? Or empty your cookies?
  9. What a shame that it happened so early in the test. Did she remember the rest of the time? I guess I would hate for my student to depend on the 5 minute warning. Does he have a watch? Was there a clock in the room? Having 20 unanswered questions sounds like he would have left some blank even with the 5 minute warning. Having said that, if the ACT is like the SAT, they will probably give the students the option of a retake. I doubt he'll get his score before having to make the decision - but it sounds like he will want a retake regardless. Next time, send him with a good watch. He'll want to manage his time independent of the proctor.
  10. Wow that sounds like the school where I tutor! There are some good books with African American and Hispanic illustrations, do you want them all in English or would Spanish work as well? The school where I tutor/sub is English only, so that limits some of what they take… anyway, oft the top of my head - Esperanza Rising Abuela Too Many Tamales Josefina (American Girl) Cactus Soup Free Baseball Going Home You might look for authors Tomie DePaolo, Eve Bunting, and Christopher Paul Curtis. Also Jerry Pinkney is an AA artist/illustrator. Also - see whether the school is registered with First Book - they have GREAT books at extremely discount prices.
  11. I second (or third?) Ticonderoga. Even the erasers are superior.
  12. Here's a Travelzoo deal for a $30 Shutterfly for $10 - I've never used Shutterfly so I don't know whether this applies to what you're trying to do :)
  13. Agree with this - I'm not sure whether your children are in choir or band or what, but if you and they enjoy the group, could you ask whether they could continue with the activity even though they're no longer going to the school?
  14. When did the Common App make its appearance? I have to think having the convenience of doing all the apps in one place made it easier (though more expensive!) to apply to multiple schools. A student applying to a dozen or more schools was uncommon 30 years ago.
  15. If you mean a card with a chip, the answer is yes. We got ours through Bank of America, which also has no foreign exchange fees.
  16. I would get a credit card with a chip in it - it will make her life so much easier while in the UK. Also I would find one that won't charge you forex fees.
  17. I wouldn't be able to sleep because of the smell, I would have a headache, my clothes would smell, and I would be grumpy for the entire time I was there.
  18. I've found several "lost" library items under the seats in my car, even after we've searched several times. Something about moving the seat all the way forward and backwards does the trick
  19. The riddle and joke books by Bennet Cerf are great.
  20. Sorry I couldn't get multi quote to work - but I agree with this - especially the bolded.
  21. This. By engaging in the "why" you leave the door open for when they "why" (i.e. pregnancy) is no longer an issue. You don't owe them an explanation. Simply "it doesn't work for me/my family" if asked.
  22. I don't think you need an excuse, unless they ask. Just give them the two weeks.
  23. Dice and mix with rice, broccoli, peppers -whatever veggies your family likes - cover with water - cook till all are tender and rice boiled off - we call it rice vege :D
