determining your graduation requirements
Melissa B replied to Miss Mousie's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I think you are overthinking it. :) My primary goal is to help my children achieve their after high school goals. As their goals change from year to year, I change our plans to help them meet these new goals. As a generic goal, I look at what the local state university is going to require and try to stay near to those requirements. -

I have recommended to my dd that she take the GRE this spring/summer. I never took it myself, but I have heard that the worst part is the gap in time between the student's last math class and the taking of the GRE. So much math that isn't often used tends to be forgotten. This would be especially true for my dd as it is already her weakest area. This spring she will take her last ever math class and so is needing recommendations on study materials for the GRE. Any great suggestions?

Transfer students, scholarships, and starting college early?
Melissa B replied to BlsdMama's topic in The College Board
I would check again with the colleges you are considering. My dd will be graduating high school this year with 117 college credits and she is still considered a freshman (for application purposes) everywhere she has applied. So long as they are dual enrollment credits (and they all are) she doesn't lose her freshman status for scholarships, etc. -

Would you put homeschooling or co-op classes on your resume?
Melissa B replied to ksr5377's topic in The Chat Board
I also had a nine year gap when I wasn't working. I put co-op teacher and 4-H leader on my resume, though they are both volunteer positions. -

T-shirts (signed by the team members) pins bag tags flowers (this was gymnastics, probably works better for an all girl team than boys or mixed teams)

Help me navigate this issue with my DS6...
Melissa B replied to kirstenhill's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
I wouldn't make a six year old participate in games in which he wasn't interested. I wouldn't let him sit out either. I would have him jog/walk laps during PE if he wasn't interested in the game. I would offer the same option to every child. Sitting isn't an option, but if the game isn't interesting, jogging is always available as a second choice. -
applications have been submitted...
Melissa B replied to teachermom2834's topic in The College Board
My dd has all but one application in and she just received her first acceptance today! It is one of her safeties, but as she's my oldest, it is such a relief to know she is definitely getting in somewhere next year. We're the first in both my family and my husband's family to homeschool so I know both families are curious to know how it all ends. :D- 11 replies

Community rec soccer - age level / parental attitude
Melissa B replied to SKL's topic in The Chat Board
Our U-10 is very supportive. Even the most competitive parents try and scale it back and stick to encouraging comments only. Our local travel team picks up the best/most competitive players though. I'm hoping U-12 is just as supportive, as my ds moved up to that level and starts practice sometime in the next week or two. -

Melissa B replied to caedmyn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It is taking my ds about 45 minutes with the fact practice and any corrections.
