10th grade planning thread
Melissa B replied to elegantlion's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
For a second, I couldn't figure out what I was thinking. That plan isn't at all what I'm planning for my 10th grader. Then I realized - wrong child. :) -
Online Summer classes
Melissa B replied to purplejackmama's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Classical Learning Resource Center offered summer classes last year. My dd took a Cinema class that she really enjoyed. The last I heard, this year's summer course list is supposed to be up in April. -
AoPS Alcumus? AoPS experiences
Melissa B replied to Wildiris's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
I don't know if it was a coincidence, but my dd was accepted shortly after I posted the question. :) -
AoPS Alcumus? AoPS experiences

How long did it take them to approve your consent letters? I emailed mine back right away, we are still waiting for dd's account to be approved and unlocked. -
Algebra like Saxon but slower paced?
Melissa B replied to Trilliums's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I am using Math U See with my dd that struggles with math. She used Saxon up to prealgebra, but then needed something simpler. Something with more focus on one concept yet continued practice on what she had already learned. She is loving MUS. But, we have never used the videos. -
at what age do you let your kids watch whatever they want?
Melissa B replied to woolybear's topic in The Chat Board
14ish. However, we only have one television. It is in the living room. Whatever is being watched on it must be acceptable viewing for the youngest person at home (and awake.) -
taking grades in High School
Melissa B replied to ProudGrandma's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
The only class we have with daily work would be math. I still make them correct all of their mistakes. However, I only grade exams. The final grade is an average of the exam grades. -
I don't know that I would necessarily consider it a downside, but my dd (a junior this year) is running into the issue that she must declare a major at the same time as she applies to colleges for admissions because of the number of college credits she has earned. She will still enter as a freshman, but her credit count does require her to also submit a major application as well. She is sending in applications in six months and must choose her major(s) by that time.

I split mine. My dd does two full credits worth of study in English and Literature. I don't see it as any different than giving two science credits for doing two sciences in one year. You wouldn't roll the two science credits into one when two full programs were completed. A college only asks for four (or less) science credits. One wouldn't do the student the disservice of trying to combine two science credits in order to stay closer to the three to four credit requirement.

I would say it is not too heavy, but we do go heavy on English. I use the Galore Park English books for passage reading. They conveniently cover a fiction, non-fiction and poetry passage each chapter. Those first three exercises have been very helpful to my kids in understanding how to pull meaning from literature plus GP is our only vocabulary program outside of Latin. It has also helped in ACT testing. I skip any of the exercises after the x.1, x.2 and x.3 that I feel are redundant to something we have already done recently. Or we quickly go over them orally. For my dd, I am planning: GP SYRWTL English I + Grammar (MCT Grammar Town/Practice Town) Spelling (Spelling Power) - would love to drop this, but we aren't quite there yet Literature (Omnibus II, secondary) Writing (CW Homer B - minus the Harvey's grammar) Latin (MP First Form Latin) I am figuring one hour for GP English, Spelling and MCT grammar (but really it will be closer to 45 minutes.) Then one hour for Latin and one hour for Literature/Writing daily. However, only Latin is done five days per week, all the others are only four days per week as we have co-op on the fifth day.

Thanks, Anne. The pervasiveness of the author's religious views is our major concern and Roman Roads looks interesting. Unfortunately, I forgot to add that we are looking for modern history and would be using Omnibus III. The website states that the modern history portion of Roman Roads won't be ready until 2016.

My daughter is taking a break from team after several years (I wouldn't mind making it permanent.) She has the standard gymnast body form. She is a good diver and excellent swimmer. But, right now she is in a children's triathlon training program. She will compete her first triathlon next month. She is finding the training fun yet challenging.

In order to avoid confusion and prevent a transcript that looks too padded we are putting only college level classes on my dd's high school transcript. She took a bunch of high school level classes before 9th grade and a few during her high school years as well. But, she started dual enrollment in 9th grade and has enough college credits to cover all of her high school classes, so we just dropped everything else. Since her high school transcript matches her college transcript anyway, I listed her high school transcript by subject rather than year so that it is easier to read.

Online Japanese class - know of any?
Melissa B replied to Mom2boys's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I sent CLRC an email letting them know that I have a child (age 15) interested in Japanese next fall. -
Thank you. That is great news. My dd is definitely a motivated, yet struggling math student. MUS has been a good fit thus far. She will be very happy to know that she can start both books together and we won't need to rush through either program. Slow and steady has been her math mantra for a long time now.

My dd is doing MUS PreAlgebra right now in 9th grade. So it would be her first real exposure to Algebra. She is doing very well with the MUS Prealgebra and this is my dd that has always struggled with math. I normally see Algebra 2 and Geometry together as well, but that puts her finishing Geometry near the end of 11th grade which is late for testing purposes. She is motivated to move into both the Algebra and Geometry texts as soon as she finishes up the PreAlgebra text, but I'm not sure how much of the information in algebra 1 may be needed first in order to understand the geometry text. I know that I do not want to move at a faster rate through algebra 1. So the only remaining possibility is starting geometry concurrently at the earliest point possible without jeopardizing understanding.

Historical fiction list to accompany VP - OTAE
Melissa B replied to Melissa B's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Yes, this is what I was looking for. Thanks! -
Does anyone have an historical fiction list to accompany the Veritas Press Self-paced history program - Old Testament and Ancient Egypt? I am looking for a list that provides in which weeks each book is read. Thanks!

Check with the community college and make sure they are accepting non-degree seeking students. Find out when he can register. If he has to wait until the week classes begin, the classes he wants may already be closed.
