  1. I know some people here have recommended the Flipper big button remote for seniors who have trouble navigating technology. The feature I’m really looking for is the ability to program in a set number of channels and scroll through them. My question is does that work with services like Hulu+ TV on a smart TV? (We don’t have cable and are looking for a way to have local channels plus a few movie or old tv show channels available.) Will the remote just get her to the Hulu app and then she’ll still need a way to navigate their menu, or can we program in “local NBC station through Hulu” as an option she can flip to? Or is there another product/streaming setup anyone recommends that will work for this?
  2. I suspect this is the problem. Some people think lots of excess is wasteful, others think it’s necessary for a feast. She probably thinks the amount of food you would plan is terribly skimpy, which might be why she doesn’t want to make a plan with you. Neither of you is wrong, it’s a clash of styles/cultures.
  3. Ah yes. King Cluck is still in our basement. We never did build him a pyramid.
  4. Sounds like hurricane supplies to me! If you want to step up from sewing squares and strips to sewing strips in a pattern Eleanor Burn’s Quilt in a Day books are accessible for beginners. Her Log Cabin one was one of my first quilts. It’s still just sewing long straight seams, but the results make it look like you’ve done something super complicated.
  5. It is reasonable to offer to have a matching portrait made. It is not reasonable to ask her to take down the portraits she has if she declines. You get to decide what to display in your house. Other people decide what to display in theirs.
  6. The teens and I got our boosters tonight. Their 4th Pfizer and my 1st after four Moderna. My arm is already sore 2 hours post shot. The kids say they’re fine.
  7. Might be a medical issue. Sounds more like an affair. He’s criticizing her and telling her he doesn’t have to support her. That’s softening her up to feel grateful and not ask for more when tells her he’s divorcing her but will offer her a $x settlement.
  8. Agreeing with everyone else that it will probably just be numbed and he can drive himself. I’ve had one root canal and one broken tooth extracted, both with a specialist and for both the numbing was much faster and more complete than for regular dental work. I think they go straight for the main nerve or something.
  9. My two Minnesota boys didn’t take their winter coats with them anywhere all last winter, except for extended outdoor activities. I think once they outgrow snowsuits and mittens-on-string it becomes a point of pride or something. Hoodies year round.
  10. Whoever picked that photo to go with that headline is a pot-stirrer.
  11. I am glad to live in a metro area that reports wastewater sampling, because I don’t think testing or reporting are happening at meaningful rates.
  12. In a week long visit she had 4 meals out with BIL. That’s 4/15, assuming 5 full days and discounting travel days. She came to see both her sons. Does she really have to switch houses half-way through the week if she wants to spend time with the other one? Oh wait, that’s inappropriate too. edit: bolt and I are obviously thinking along the same lines and posted at the same time. Sorry if that feels like a pile-on.
  13. Interesting. I’ve only ever heard it used to comfort someone who regrets their previous actions/words.
  14. She’s not asking you to try to get them to do the 3 year old stuff, right? Just changed the name? If so, yes it’s ridiculous, but probably better for the kids to have their parents stop trying to push them into a class they aren’t ready for.
  15. Probably neither. I was imagining it like “Is it okay if I miss practice on ___ day?” ”If you miss practice you will have to sit out the next game.” ”Okay.” In your son’s head that meant “okay I will sit out the game,” (which is literally what was said) but in the coaches head it might have meant “okay, I now understand that I am not supposed to miss practice so I won’t.”
  16. You have a chance to help your kids break out of the cycle of generation pettiness. We don’t have to teach someone a lesson every time our feelings get hurt. She traveled 2000 miles to see her kids and grandkids. The ideal way to get the most out of that time is to do many things together as an extended family. That’s complicated by the fact that you don’t like BIL. She didn’t react well to your proposal that she not spend her last evening with everyone she came to see. She’s about to be 2000 miles again and you’re going to forbid any fun on her last day here to make a point. Is that really what you want to teach your kids?
  17. It is also true that, despite how many media sites want everyone to believe that there are “Fifteen Crazy Rules that All Royals Must Follow” and an exact plan for handling the queens death, the people involved might decide they aren’t releasing the info until her closest family are told even if that means a delay in the flag protocol. Procedures are made up and they can be changed.
  18. Too bad so sad for him that it’s no longer your job to arrange things for his convenience.
  19. For paneer you take the milk hotter to get a stronger protein network so you can get a solid cheese when you press it. Some people use the terms interchangeably. In my world cottage cheese is cultured, so either buttermilk or a powdered culture is added and given some time to work. Sometime the name ricotta is used only for whey ricotta, which is made by heating the leftover whey after making other cheeses. But I would call what you’re making whole milk ricotta. Cheese is so fun. Pulling your own string cheese is a good project for kids. You can get kits, or buy the ingredients separately. I have not had good luck buying rennet tablets from Amazon, though. I think they were old, or hadn’t been stored properly. Buy locally or order directly from a company that specializes in cheese making supplies.
  20. Good for you! Don’t get sucked in. One advantage of your new life is not having to live/work with him.
  21. It’s super easy . . . Heat milk to 185F, turn off heat, add acid (vinegar, lemon juice, lime juice — whatever you have handy), stir gently and let set for a few minutes. You should see whitish bits separating from yellowish liquid. Drain through cheesecloth or a tea towel or a fine mesh strainer. Stir in a little salt and whatever other seasoning you want. 1/2-2/3 cup vinegar or juice for a gallon of milk. For the two of us for dinner I used about a third of a gallon and two small limes. The higher the fat content of the milk the smoother and creamier the cheese. Skim milk yields big chunky curds, whole milk ricotta is more like a spread.
  22. Ricotta. The other day the kids wanted spaghetti and meatballs and I needed a base for the low-carb eaters so I made a batch of fresh ricotta and mixed it with spinach and onions in the time it took to boil water and cook pasta. Husband was stunned.
  23. Atheism isn’t a religion anymore than theism is a religion. They are both positions on one specific question about the nature of reality. It’s possible to have a religion whose tenets are atheistic, just as it’s possible to have a religion whose tenets are theistic, but you need more than a position on that one question to make a religion
