SonshineLearner replied to Bokons's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Gas....Electric is horrible... But, I've heard Electric is good for the oven...and convection is great! Carrie:-) -

I always look twice at "there" instead of "their" or when people try to sound proper and misuse "I". Carrie:-) -
Fleas What do you use?
SonshineLearner replied to tsuche's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't think you can use some of the things on cats that you can on dogs... I don't think you are suppose to do garlic... Carrie -
Do you color your hair??
SonshineLearner replied to KatieJ's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have some henna dye that's specifically for grey. I need to do it again...have the box ready and everything...but I just hate doing it. But, I do hate the grey, too! I'm only 37; my mom doesn't have one grey hair! Carrie -
Hi There, I'm looking for Scripture Memory Cds that include, but not necessarily just..., the memory work that CC does. I am not limiting myself to KJV, but if you know what version the cds sing, that'd be great, too! We need John 1:1-7, The Ten Commandments (but not just paraphrased), and Ephesians 6:1-24. Anyone have great Cds to suggest? Thanks! Carrie:-)

Maybe it's a crazy question, but have you thought of doing Latina Christiana with them. It's maybe not the "fun" that some are looking for, but it was really great for us. If you can find another family to do it with, it makes it more of a "class". My daughters were 8,11, and 14 when we started and it worked out great for them. Of course, I would purchase the dvds to go with them, and plan on spending 30 minutes or so...each day.... (Or at least the lesson and then 3 times a week) Just a thought....and less expensive:-) They are doing well now with Henle.... Carrie:-)

The whole chemo thing would affect how I think.....Ask the Dr about that part. BUT, even though I'm not Catholic, I find the information on the site run by Catholics, very compelling as to vaccinations. Especially the information about the Chicken pox(varicella). I also don't want to constantly have to shoot the vaccine in my child's body so that they don't get it. At 11...that's a lot of years to worry about something that hasn't been around for that long. As a side note, if you look for symptoms of shingles, you can sometimes catch it. You have to drag out the med books...and look. My cousin, who has become great at looking for symptoms, caught the shingles in the first stage for her husband...and yanked in down to the DR. He was given the meds for viruses and it didn't go full blown, so he didn't have a problem from it. Carrie:-)

What food would you bring to this event?
SonshineLearner replied to Julie in CA's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I want to make tiny quiches in the phyllo shell crusts. I've never made those before. Do you actually have a tried and true recipe for these?? Carrie:-) -
Very Nice...and seems like you have a sweet daughter who is trying to study hard. I can only hope we'll be so fortunate! Carrie

on the fence about Classical Conversations
SonshineLearner replied to JennyL's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Pam...You're a GREAT tutor! And, we love you! Carrie:-) -
I wouldn't call Dr. Sear's book "Attachment parenting." I'd say..."Here's something pretty mainstream & it's nice...he even lists how much Tylenol to give your baby when they're screaming in the middle of the night:-)" Now, whether he is mainstream or not....that's a toss. I believe it should be mainstream...:-) Here's the other thing...sorry...but I don't think it's "DR" at all... but if he is DR Ezzo... he's not a DOCTOR...like for babies. I think he's damaged families and made failure to thrive...raise in numbers. He may be able to see the alert babies when he checks out the Church nurseries.... that's because they're looking for some food and open arms. AND, if you ask in Hospitals, they can tell you what Ezzo babies look like, too. It's not pretty if you ask... On and on...listen to your baby and fuss with them until they're happy:-) And yes... don't stick them in plastic containers all the time. Oh yes, I like Ergo's too...... http://myfavoritebabycarriers.com/ They offer a 90 day money back guarantee:-) Carrie:-)

Jr High * High School Coop
SonshineLearner replied to SonshineLearner's topic in High School and Self-Education Board

Hi There, So, I'm totally covered until 7th grade. BUT, then I'm really nervous; I was thinking that we would do Classical Conversations for 7th-12th. I already know that we would need to add some lessons in different areas to complete what I want her to know by the end of High School, but now I'm not even sure that we'll have a complete Challenge program for quite a few years. I'm not concerned about Math, so it's all the rest that I'm thinking about. Mostly history and subjects that it's nice to have a group for. I'd love to hear any programs that seem to flow nicely from 7th-at least 10th, but preferably 12th. We are a Christian family, but I am open to looking at any curriculum. I don't really want to do a pop in for what subjects you want to take method. I really want a 1-2 day a week program. Anyone have a program (or belong to something) they think is great? Thanks! Carrie :bigear:

Classical Conversations... where would a sixth grader fit?
SonshineLearner replied to Bess's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It is totally worth starting in 6th instead of 7th. In 7th, there's a crash review of Foundations, which will put your child more at ease if it is... review. Also, some kids go up at 12 and some at 13. It's a developmental issue versus an age distinction. I also think that it is easier to go into Challenge knowing the other students. Another consideration is that you will have a better understanding of writing and grammar with a year of Essentials being done. I believe that if they have a better first Challenge year...with at least a year of Foundations and Essentials (which is the grammar/writing) year behind them. This also gives you a year to start latin....before Challenge A. Maybe you can get some hints from someone else about that:-) Carrie:-) PS, come join our social group, right on this board:-) -
Learning mathematics with the Abacus
SonshineLearner replied to LadyAberlin's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
This is what I have. I really like it but I haven't officially started using it. I think it's best to have an abacus for those you think will be doing it...at the same time. In other words, I have one for myself as teacher and one for each of my children. The abacus isn't heirloom quality, but it's functional. I purchased an extra abacus at an Oriental Shop in CA that looks and functions just like the ones I purchased from NurtureMinds.com My husband sat down the first night we received it and worked through the whole book. Not only does it go through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, but it also teaches the child how to visualize the abacus in their mind. The are encouraged to work out some of the problems in their mind, which is useful for when there is no abacus available. (We got year 1 & 2) I think it looks like it's really going to work for us! Carrie:-) -
Ok, I'm usually safe....I'm sure this is considered unsafe...BUT, I did use an exersaucer and my son, when he wanted to get out...would tip all the way forward and pop himself out! Those were the days! Now he just does things like walk on the back of the couch (it's sitting in the middle of the room) and other such things. My husband thought it'd be a good thing to have him visit the roof with him last summer! Sons, if they are able to make it to adulthood safely, have been granted a miracle! Carrie:-)

That would have been fun! We'll have to meet up some other time:-) We have our Oregon "social group" and we've talked about all meeting up...course...I think some of us are talking w/o kids:-) But, whatever we do, I'm sure we'll post it on here, too! Carrie:-)
