  2. what ages? We did the SWI-B in a school year(middle school level).
  3. that stinks. My dh had a job offer last year where they never even met him. Did 2 calls on the phone. DH asked to come in to see the office/environment/meet the team. They said that wasn't normal. They allowed it but Dh turned it down. Who wouldn't let future employees see the office? Sorry it turned out back. But yes, go with your gut on these companies!
  4. Well, going on year 4 here and I haven't gone out to buy specific rain gear for all of us. We already had waterproof hiking boots. We already owned rain coats. I camp and hike a lot, so I just bought a new rain coat from Cabela's I'm hoping will keep me dry AND not be too hot. We will see how breathable it is. I hope to get DD a rain coat as well this year. The boys don't camp/hike in winter anymore so they can deal with what we have. I have old rain boots but never bought new ones. I can think of 2 times I wish DD had rain boots. I'll try to grab her a cheap pair this fall as well. It's a drizzle. If it's cold your winter coat is probably fine. It will keep you dry and warm. but we are outdoorsy people and still haven't gone through the process of buying rain gear. I borrowed rain pants once and it was too hot to hike in, so now I just deal with wet legs. I think we own one pair of gaiters for hiking but no one has used them....
  5. my kids were back to back grades and oh man, we wised up quickly that each year is just slightly harder than the previous year and I combined them. Dd opted to move up, but I could have easily moved Ds down. In fact, DD skipped 7 and went from level 6 to 8. It was a jump, but it's possible. So I would put them together and in whatever grade you felt comfortable with. And be willing to skip in the following year if they were strong in it
  6. Are you going to be living in the city? Or the suburbs? I would focus on visiting things in the area you will live. Big parks, recreation nearby. If you like outdoors go do some exploring at Ranier or St Helens. Maybe go to Seattle center and do one touristy thing and ride the monorail. We live close to Bellevue if you want to connect.
  7. we pay $60 with comcast for the faster internet. Dh has to call every year when they double it after a year is up. So 60 for 12 months, 120 for 1 month, then 60 for another 12 months. Like clockwork. He calls and asks for reduced rate and they give it to him after the one month of regular rate...it's a pain but saves money
  8. There was a new one in my store, Cup 4 Cup in a blue bag, that I'm having great results with. King Arthur also has a good multipurpose blend.
  9. we all got Trek bikes a few years ago and love them. Check CL for a higher end bike as well. But you got to try it at least a little...otherwise you might hate what you purchase.
  10. Ideal would be 15 min. Piano 10min Violin 20min Scouts 45min Dh commute 1+ hr We are in big debate about moving closer to dh's work. Kids would need to change music teachers. Im tired of driving all the time
  11. I bought a Serta pillow at Kohls a few years ago that was $70 but it's amazing. Thick but doesn't shrink down overnight. I love my pillow. Dh bought something similar at a mattress store. He too loves his pillow. It's heavy and I wasn't sure I would like it, but it's supportive and soft at the same time. And doesn't go flat. It's just the most amazing pillow ever
  12. Wellness Formula. Changed our lives. Take it during stressful times. Take it when beginning to feel sick or someone in family is sick. It's amazing stuff. Dh's coworker took some last week and came back a few hours later begging to know what Dh had given him b/c he felt amazing ;-) We used to have bad asthma attacks and super long 2-3 week illness every winter. Wellness Formula has changed all that for us.
  13. There is a line. I had a pediatrician for ds that we just butted heads about everything. She said I would be best served elsewhere. My dd had seen another Dr in the practice so I thought I could just change visits to her. She and I got along great, but she told me if one Dr dismisses you the others can't see you. So we had to leave the practice. Hope the new medicine works better for you
  14. I bought some on Amazon that showed one thing but a chinese knock off showed up at my house. When I questioned it they offered me a partial refund. I said I wanted a full refund. They said ok and didn't even want their merchandise back. I tried to contact Amazon and the seller about the fact the image advertised isn't what showed up but you can't say bad things in a review or it gets denied and the company listed isn't who shipped to me, so the whole experience was weird and no good results came of it for future purchasers. I did get new pairs from USA with CE and ISO certifications on them. You can't see through these at all. Sadly, my source has sold out as many have. I remember an eclipse as a child where we did the box with the pin hole through foil and you look at the eclipse on the back of the box. Not as exciting as staring at the sun, but you could see the overlap happening
  15. Both my kids did it in middle school. We only used Year 1. They wanted independent science and this is perfect for that. I did feel it was light, so both kids did read Tiner books along with the program. My ds did it in 6th grade and it was perfect. My dd did it in 8th grade and she felt it wasn't enough. I agree that it's fine for 6th/7th grader wanting to move to an independent course. It will feel too light for an 8th grader, even with added reading. It teaches the basic concepts, and the experiments are easy and fun to implement. I'm glad we used this course. Again, I would say it's better suited for the younger middle schooler. My DS decided to do Apologia Physical science in 8th(he did Rainbow in 6th and loved it so much he wanted another physical science year) and that course is much more reading, more labs, just overall MORE in comparison to Rainbow. The reason I had my DD use Rainbow in 8th is b/c she had no interest in the subject, but ended up loving physics after doing Rainbow and is excited about high school physics. Both enjoyed the program where we used it for them and ignited a love for science.
  16. my ds started violin this year as a teen, but his teacher said to practice well, not based on time. She did say that for some kids, 20 min of good practice is more effective than 30 min of not being focused practice. She expects him to play a song multiple times with the goal of improving something during that practice. He was over practicing early on b/c he just wants to be able to play something awesome with no effort ;-) But like i said, his teacher said to focus on a good practice session and not being long in length if the focus isn't there. Which means he often does short practices but many a day. My dd does piano and when she's bored of the music she doesn't want to practice. Could the teacher give some fun item to learn?
  17. Honestly, Ask one more time about older kids going to do something together and if they all say no drop it. I just asked if our church youth group high school kids could do something without the middle school kids and the adult in charge asked me why would they want to do something without the younger kids? He didn't get it. His oldest is one of the youngest. He see's it as excluding. He won't get it until his kid is older and doesn't want to hang with younger. So ask. Be prepared for a no. Even plan it and offer to pay for just the older ones. The parents either understand or they don't.
  18. We are in a weird place in society with this right now. Back in the day unmarried people wouldn't be in the same room together overnight. Until the generations that grew up that way have passed on, there is going to be conflict about this between the older people and younger people. DH and I did live together before marriage. It killed my Christian mom. I remember going camping with her before married and brought 1 tent. She had a huge fit and was so mad at us. Seriously? I'm camping in a tent next to you. I'm not doing anything in that tent with my mom beside me!?!??! She was fine after we married. When we visited before being married she insisted on separate rooms. It was crazy, but whatever. It's HER house. We abided by the rules. I guess since she didn't see us living together it wasn't happening in her mind? Did she think being apart in her home would change our opinion? I did as she asked, but it seemed crazy. I love her, so I indulged in her rules. My own kids? I'm not there yet...but at some point they may come home from college/adult life with a significant other. If they are just dating I would ask them to do separate rooms. If they are already living together what's the point? Just more laundry...
  19. my son did Environmental science for 9th. Used Holt's Environmental science book from Rainbow Resource. Gets you a 1 year access to the teacher materials and extra student items online. We opted not to do a lot of the labs(very classroom based), but it was a good science he could do independently. He learned a ton and I hear all about it randomly here and there in conversation lol.
  20. are you driving through Yellowstone? When we drove across the country we went through Yellowstone that day and spent the night in Butte. We entered on the east side, saw the lake, old faithful, and then headed out to the west entrance and north up to Butte. It was such a pretty drive...and the road was empty almost the entire way. Since we had driving Yellowstone that day with a few stops we didn't sightsee in Butte. We did have a wonderful dinner there at a fancy pizza place in town. So, I'd tell you to skip the main highway, go into Yellowstone and see some sights as you continue driving. It was one of our favorite road trip days.
  21. Well, for all the long term planning I did when mine were younger, come middle school they start having their own opinions and interests. I could have used my time more effectively than ever researching my own ideas ...but we live and we learn. My kids had full choice in middle school. And it was a crazy mash up of interests MiddleSchool: ds: Rainbow science(chem/phys), earth/geology/astronomy, Physical science. I know, he did 2 physical science classes. He liked it. dd: earth/geology/astronomy, Life science, Physical science High School so far: ds: Environmental, Biology(2017-18) dd: Biology(2017-18) I'm pretty sure my dd will do astronomy for high school and physics. My ds however hasn't said what is next... I had this plan for lots of traditional and interest sciences, but at this point I just let them decide near the end of a year for the upcoming year and then focus my research efforts.
  22. We ordered recently with the app. It was faster than getting into line, ordering, and waiting. In fact, ordering on the app made getting a shake much shorter. I've only done it once though...so I can't vouch that is is better all the time. yet.
  23. is the place you stay in a time share resort? I know when my grandma bought hers it allowed pets. But then they changed the rule The people who bought before the rule change were still allowed to bring pets to the non pet resort. I don't think people coming there would know pets had been in the room b/c it was supposed to be pet free. My point is, depending on the type of resort housing it's possible some people have permission for pets, while others do not. If it makes you feel better, I would have called and reported it too...more in the way of asking if it's allowed. I told on a camper using a fire when we had a burn ban. Turns out they had a propane fire pit they brought with. So while it looked like a fire from my site, it was technically legal even though the camp host didn't like they were doing it during the ban.
  24. It's up to you how you grade it. I agree about not listing it as an outside course if you decide to give her a B. Some of this has to be your discretion...did she try really hard? Was the lower grade only deadline issues or her output/content/testscore?? Every online class my kids have done the teacher says the grade it up to the parent. I hope to include grade print outs for outside classes, so I'm not changing grades for mine. However, if it was her first class I would consider why the grade was low and maybe adjust it if in the future she doesn't have the same issues. We are in a different time zone and I made sure my kids knew what time in our zone assignments were due. They are kids, they aren't thinking about timezones. In fact, one class was pretty early in our day, so I just told my kids to be done the day prior, no exceptions. So a little grace for her first class might be appropriate.
